Advice for a New Player

Hi,

I've just ordered FFXI, and am looking forward to it's arrival. Whilst I'm waiting, could anyone give me any advice about starting the game.

What does a new player have to know? What sort of advice do you wish someone told you before you started?

I guess one of my first decisions will be to pick race/job. I've heard that Warriors are too common, and find it hard to join groups, whilst white mages find it relatively easy. What about the other starting jobs? How do they find things? Is there a particular party make up that peforms better than others?

Do some jobs come with a "noob" reputation that I'd be forced to overcome? Are some more interesting or boring to play? Should I start thinking about my sub-job early on?

Any advice you could give would be helpful.
