what are some good mafia/gangster type movies?

LordMagnusLordMagnus Member CommonPosts: 1,322

I've seen a couple of the Godfather movies but those are about the only ones i've seen. I've also seen a Clockwork Orange (I didn't really like it). I was also thinking of watching Scarface a little later on too. So what are some good movies similar to the Godfather and Scarface? Please don't recommend any of that "hip hop gangster" crap though.

Thanks for any responses.

EDIT: My original message didn't make sense so I had to do a few changes.

Casino, is the best I can think of off the top of my head.

Snatch is good too, but thats maybe not as mafia-ish. Oh, and that one with Tom Hanks... Road to Perdition is good.

How in gods name could you hate A Clockwork Orange the movie borders on art form. The first time I saw it I was like what a perverted useless film how disgusting. The second time I realized it was absolutly amazing there are so many little things in that movie that make it great. It's the only film where music plays such an important part. Also looks and feels amazingly modern considering it came out in 1971. I watch the movie every 6 months and has yet to get boring. Just recently I noticed in the secene where his two former droogs are carrying him off into the woods one of there vests has the number 665 and the other guy has 667 and alex being carryed along in the middle implying he is 666. Little things like that you never notice make the film great. I think you need to see it a second time.

But I hear Carlito's Way was really good.

Clockwork Orange is a classic!  Carlito's Way is one of my favorite gangster movies.  Other good one's are Donnie Brasco and GoodFella's.

A Bronx Tale, mightn't be what you're looking for but it's good and there's gangsters in it :p

    For Comedy Johnny Dangerously...heheh

As someone said before Donnie Brasco was a pretty good movie. Actually most of these are pretty good choices.

I liked Casino..even though it was long, give it an afternoon.  Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels was also good.

For one that has not been suggested yet, I enjoyed Hoodlum(Tim Roth, Laurence Fishburne, Andy Garcia).  I am a Tim Roth fan though.

Scarface is awesome. It has lots of action. It is a long 4 hours (something like that)... I just skipped through all the boring stuff and watched the violent parts.

Woops... Didn't notice you mentioned you already saw it in your post...

Scarface, Goodfellas, Boyz in the hood, Menace II Society, Casino, Millers Crossing, Once Upon a time in America, Colors, Clockwork Orange ( you must be insane if you didn't like it ), Juice (starring Tupac); all of those movies are pure classic gangster flicks. Please don't disregard any of the so called "Hip Hop Gangster type" films I listed, they are classics and deserve their place in gangster movie history, espcially Boyz in the Hood. It's truly a gem.

I am ashamed of myself, the funny thing is, I just recommended this movie to my cousin on Tuesday.
