I was just wondering about this...
I pesonally was in a EVE CORP WAR battle that had probably 120 players or so... not huge but was enough combat to really get the blood a pumping and not tax my computer and connection to much.

Also some of the WOE battles in Ragnarok Online used to get pretty big when Ragnarok Online was popular. Multiple 64 person guilds would attack at the same time. Now that was just a sea of people. Too bad they don't have a reward system for killing off players.
Starport: Galactic Empires: A lot less (about 20 at most) but very tactical and very good value. A lot of skillz in one single star-system.

In the eary days of Shadowbane, we would have battles of 200+ people almost every day
Been in battles in SWG with over 100 easily
Been in battles in UO that were roughly 100 or so back in it's heyday.
Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.

Still in: A couple Betas
Shadowbane, about 3 months into the game. Had about 150vs200+
Coming into the fight with 150 we all figured the win would be all but certain but to our astonishment the enemy totally outnumbered us.
Lineage 2-Probably 400+
There have been bigger.

The biggest battle in the amount of players involved I was in was the first time our EQ server take on AoW after the Legends tragedy, the leading guild was lacking the staff to take on the AoW alone...
There was between 110 and 130 persons for sometimes...it was not fun by any mean.
There was over 500 peoples in the Bazaar, no battles, big lagfeast.
I honestly prefer the fight which involves 8 masterminds(CoV) with their 6 pets each (and 3 other pets from side powers)...looking at the 51 pets and 8 players was funny as hell and not really laggy.
I rather have 1k enemies in front of me than having to bear guilds policies managed by lootwhores! No thanks, anything that is not pure random is not worth mentionning, everyone time is worth just as much as everyone else, all looting policies lack, as they take the loot away from the casuals players, which make me feel incredibly bad, if 10% of your raid consist of casuals, they deserve 10% chances of the loot, period. Since it doesn't work with the leeches, than just kill raiding and proceed with other funnier activities, no arguing.

Just because I have mentioned "the biggest battle (I known of) had 900+ players with moderator confirmed", does not mean there isn't or Lineage 2 can't take 1k+ players lol.
It's just the matter of the size of the forces involved in the siege. No alliance I known off have 400+ players yet. In order to break 1k players at one single siege, it requires many alliances involve in it. L2 is such a game, only organized and planned alliances will join the siege. So no random ppl beside spectators. Each alliance have their goals - taking over the castle for the attacking side, defending the castle for the defender. And note the defender isn't some random joining event players, but in L2 the alliance took over a castle will hold it forever until someone else kick them out. And sure they can have other alliance who are friendly to them to help defending with approve. While any alliance can sign up to attack as they wish.
As far as laggy goes, it has nothing to do with server, it's 100% grahpic laggy, which is really hardwares of player side depended. It proves the theory with 1. lower grahpic settings = less laggy 2. with no matter how many players are inside the siege zone at once, you won't get laggy as long as there aren't 500+ players WITHIN 50 meters. The siege zone is pretty big, so as long as you have a good PC, not high setting, not in the middle of 500 people, there is no laggy.
And make it more clearly, Lineage 2 can take 1k+ players, if not 3k+(pretty sure there are 3k+ players on each server at most time, and there is no laggy. Since L2 is not zone based, imo one castle zone can handle all these players too) As long as your own PC can handle it.
I was only playing on one of the so many servers, and I was only in one of the so many alliances. We don't attack random castles(7 castles on each server, we can't be the enemy of all 7 castle lords right?), so we don't really know the exactly number of every single castle siege even on our own server.
Yes, what I tried to say was I am sure L2 have already had 1k+ players involved in a single siege. No server side laggy usually, and it's one big world without silly zones.
Decent sized PvP battle
SWG many 150+ person battles and some were lag hell but fun still and Daoc I am seen a few nice 100+ battles in my short time there. Huge battles of PvP warfare are my favorite thing in a mmo and probably the main reason I even play, its very exciting and I get right into it. This screenie here is the last good pvp battle I had on Naritus and us Imps wooped Rebel ass.
{(RIP)} SWG
Pre-CU on Bloodfin, during summer of 2004, battles were so large they were known to crash the server. I think 400 or 500+.
Everquest 2 pvp servers were out for 3 days. over 90 lvl 12s ran accross the world and attacked the good side, ware we were eventually countered and beeten by another group of about 90...
that was fun especially since we were all lvl 12
The new EQ2, better than ever befor !

Hello there, adventurer!
WOW: EU Bronzebeard (a PVE server)
The Alliance regularly raid a settlement called the "The Crossroads" in order to receive honour (since their battle ground queues are too long).
The largest of these battles have had approximately 200 players on each side.
