Planetside

I am surprised that MMORPG.com has not run one story on Planetside's free gaming for one year.  It is an unbelievable game with a monthly fee, but free? Where else can you and dozens of players’ role a tank column into a line of giant robots controlled by other players? While at the same time, another group flys over and bombs the heck out of their base?

  • planetside was totally destroyed when SOE decided to merge the servers and allow players to switch, and their rapid nerfing of many enjoyable aspects of the game, for instance the Jackhammer, the game became alot more laggy for me which made it totally unplayable, also cheaters can be seen from time to time.

but the ultimate destructive move was the merging of servers, which allowed players to join the winning team right away, leaving the losing teams to lose even more, which in result totally dis-balanced the servers.

as for me, i'll never buy a game SOE releases, i'll never even buy PS3 :}, nor i have bought any of the new consoles anyway, my last was dream cast.

Do you mean the US servers? cause Werner seems fine.
Also you didn't mean PS was 'destroyed' by jackhammers being nerfed did you?
THE most deadly gun in the game gets tuned down a little and suddenly it's not enjoyable for anyone? (especially those on the recieving end of it)

I think this is a very niche game, die hard Unreal fans dont want the slightly lower performance, and MMORPG fans don't want something they can't use rare items to win. I like to think of this as a single player fps with the best AI possible (in most cases) Great efforts have gone into the balancing altho it may not seem that way to some who dont stop to think of every possibility. Just because you got killed easily or your weapon is ineffective, doesn't mean it's inbalanced. PS is all about being in the right place at the right time with the right equipment, and also strength in numbers.

A lot of my favourite aspects of the game were taken out too, like using weapons with surge, and target locking Strikers after fireing the missiles. But just because they were my favourite things doesn't mean the other guy is finding them fun. To him that seems unfair that a player can run 2x speed while shooting or hit their max with 5 AV rockets without warning.
Nowa days, imo BFR flight variants are the only major inbalance as well as maybe the MCG having too much recoil.
Also I've never met or heard of anyone cheating.

To OP: Doesn't MMORPG.com only have storys about their own interviews and articles?
Seems that way to me at least. Many people are quickly put off PS too by its rather steep learning curve and like I said, it's a niche title.

I just didn't go much on it when I tried it, the feel was not of a real fps, and the vehicles/planes I thought could be a lot more friendly to drive. I might try it again sometime though.

I've seriously played PlanetSide from the trial perspective and I must say it's quite an amusing game.
The feeling of being a nameless grunt, n° 64564 to die for the cause is strangely appealing.

Althoug I miss the broader perspective. It all seems a bit pointless. Although I could blame that on the BR6 limit.

And yes... Werner is more fun than the American servers. More relaxed players but this brings with it that noone minds to die and spends time and effort to defend a single tower against an overwhelming enemy force. Both sides are amused and sometimes the underdog wins, after hours of blood, blood and... blood.

Planetside would be cool if the land control were done better and each battle had more meaning.  Unfortunately the way the game is done losing a base, even an entire 'continent/world' is utterly meaningless.   Land changes hands in PS faster than any other game I've ever played.

Personally I don't think it's worth the time to install for free because you're limited to BR6 (granted it's free for a year) which is VERY limiting.  Originally it was going to be BR8, which would have been worth the time.  But BR6 just isn't.
