Can anyone name some MMOs where wealth can actually aid you in combat?
No, I don't mean just for buying better weapons, armour and so on. I mean by hireing help in the form of effective combat NPCs. So basically some badass warrior guy can actually get his arse kicked if he tries to pick a fight with a very rich and important trader/business man via the use of NPC body guards or trained expensive pets even.
This would also mean that the warrior could never be as rich as the tader, otherwise it sort of ruins the point.

I'm pretty sure those player bodyguards would get stone bored having to follow another guy about all the time and have nothing to show for it except virtual money.
...but hey some roleplayers might like that kind of thing.
I like the idea of having a mmo with no money whatsoever. Instead players would barter goods as in ancient civilisation. Otherwise in your game a guild could bankroll an entire army, which hardly seems fair.
No annoying animated GIF here!
Hrm, good point.
Perhaps if the body guards were expensive enough and had perma death (like SWG did) guilds wouldn't battle whore them so much. Also if you have to arm them yourself it would make them even more expensive. You could also limit them to one per player, that way each crafter could only have 1 to fight in their place at any time.
I thought of another example for fighting with money. If it's a sci-fi MMO, the rich guys could have battle suits or mechs of some kind. Make them really strong but really expensive, and once you die it's destroyed and you have to buy another one. That drawback is enough to make the users wary and not pick pointless fights themselves.
Hello there, adventurer!
Dark and Light has this feature in almost all aspects of the game, power through wealth and status http://www.darkandlight.net/?lang=en

"A Baron can buy NPC guards to protect a convoy of goods, and to perform other services.
It should be noted that a PC can, by renting the services of NPCs or other players, become Master of a fortress without even fighting."

"The sale on a well selected market makes it possible to gain the most Goth (the currency of Ganareth), but the commercial caravans can be attacked and plundered before arriving at destination. A carriage is indeed a Dark or Light “entity” and can thus be the subject of loot by the adversary. But for this reason, it can also be protected by guards."
I know of this one game, it is called Real Life!
(not a real game for those that don't get it)
<p>Lineage2 before siege, the castle lord can hire more npc mercenary if you have the money. But there is a limit to max npc guards allowed. And since players are getting higher and higher lvl and better equiped, the npc guards are almost a non-factor in siege these days execpt the only situation of having formations of npc archers behind the front gate to hold of the enemies who are bashing it, because npcs are "cheating" by be able to target and shoot through the gate. Players can shoot through the gate too, but you need a target first and players can't see through the gate. It doesn't always work, since each castle can be penetrated not only from the front gate, but also if you have siege golems to bash through the castle wall. The stationary npc archers can't even move, so there was case of stupid castle lord concentrated all npc archers at front gate while non of them were used because of the attacking force bashed through the side wall with 4 siege golems.

Talking about siege golems, it's also about money. It costs a lot for each dwarf to make a siege golem which can be used to bash the gate/wall during siege. Only golems can bash through the side walls, and if players try to bash the front gate the casualties would be high. So money matters I guess.

this isnt really what your looking for but in silkroad ppl higher other players as bodyguards whilst doing trade runs etc ??

Well in Silkroad online, unless you that's your friend, don't trust random Hunters.
I learned it the harder way. Once 5 of us played as trader for a business trip, and we hired 4 Hunters to guard us against thieves. It was a round trip. And it was fine during the first half. Then on the way back, these "hunters" switched on thief suits, and jacked us all! They were like average 10 levels higher than us, so the resault was
There is only 10 min. reuse time for switching between jobs. Which sux. Hiring player hunters is as risky as telling thieves where you are unless that's someone you know well.
btw, I got my revenge lol. 2 weeks later I saw these fake hunters again, they were doing the trade this time and they were laughing at me when they saw me. The leader of them was still like several levels higher than me, and there were 3 of them. So they thought I could do nothing about them. But I called a high level friend, as soon as these 3 idiots walked out of the gate, not too far yet, my friend put on thief suit and bang bang killed all 3 of them in 5 sec. Took me 3 trips to transported all the goods they dropped. :
