SMN/BLM credibility

I saw in some other post that someone thought black mage and summoner were a horrible combination for Main/Support jobs (summoner the necessary main job)... Why? It seems like this would be a great combination... Summon a carbuncle or other spirit to fight for you, then nuke the mob while the spirit tanks... Even better would be a SMN/WHM but it's really just preference... So what am I missing?

Summoner as sub means very weak summons, thats why

I read somewhere that a subjob of summoner is ok if is being used just to beef up a caster. I haven't played the game yet but would that really work? Would you get extra mana points or stat bonuses with summoner as a support job? I am asking because curious because I want to become a Summoner when I get my PS2 hard drive. I know that it will take a long time to become one but that is my goal.

I think he means having a main job as a summoner and having a subjob as a black mage.

Yeah, that's what I meant when I said "Summoner as the necessary main job" because they shouldn't even allow it as a sub hehe.. but Black mage on the other hand, seems like a good sub for the classes especially like BST or SMN. Wonder who said SMN/BLM was a bad combo  Maybe it was just a rumor

Summoner/Black Mage is for me the best Summoner combo. But keep in mind that when you don't have anymore MP your Summon goes too.

And, if you're planning SMN/BLM, go for a Tarutaru with no esitations. Greater INT and MP out there, both very needed in this combo. Hume might work but Taru's muuuch better.
