It is hard to give you advice.  It all depends on what you are looking for, what server you are on, what realm, etc.  Too many variables.  I will say a few things:

    1.  Do not judge the game on the trail.  It is too short (14 days) and the best content is from the last 2 expansions which you do not have access to with the trial.

    2.  If you like to group, you will have an easier time on the "Classic" servers, but without the Catacombs expansion it will be a little harder finding a group.  The other servers are fine, and if you were purchasing the game I would suggest those, but if it is just the trial then I would probably go Classic.

    3.  People will complain about 'balance' in the game.  Just ignore them.  They are just upset because they lost a fight.

    4.  Get into a real guild and out of the starter guild soon.

    5.  Do the tutorial and intro quests given by the trainer

    6.  Kill tasks are great XP.  Go to a named guard and type /task.  If the guard has a task he will send you to kill a certain mob.  It is great XP.

    7.  I would not recomend playing an assassin or archer as your first character.  They are jsut harder to solo and harder to get groups.

    8.  Do not be afraid to go exploring.  At worst you will die.  If you are below level 6 it doesn't really matter.

    9.  Purple targets are way above your level, red a lot above your level, orange just above your level, yellow at your level, blue just below your level, green a little below your level, grey a lot below your level.  The best XP is from killing yellows/oranges.  If you have to go kill blues.  Greens are not worth it and neither are reds (you would probably die solo anyway).  Greys give no XP or loot.

    10  Try to have fun.

Try playing the Gareth server if your new to the game. However this server is considered to be a Classic server and you wont get all the PvE content if you roll this type of server. (but sure is a good server if your new to the game) It gets you used to RvR in the Battlegrounds and its way easier to find a team to group with than a Normal server.

Once you have gotten use to the Classic server, try your hands on the Normal Server like Merlin. Its more challenging and with Merlin being a Normal Server, you get alot more game Content if PvE is your style.

You still can RvR (PvP) on this type of server, but its extremely harder due to the fact everyone on this type of server is Uberized with there toons and more and likely have Buff Bots running with them.

There are so many classes to choose from whether you pick, Hibernia, Albion or Midgard. The easy button is Hibernia (IMO), lots of people roll Vamps when they choose to be Hiberians, due to the fact that soloing is easier with this class (another IMO).

Without the Catacombs and Darkness expansions, you wont get alot of the graphic updates and the game graphics may look outdated. So try getting your hands on them 2 expansions as well or just buy the Epic Edition for $19.99 at Wal-Mart which all the expansions are integrated.

The main key is to have fun and explore!

If you follow the instructions on the sticky above you will get the graphics upgrade for free.  This way you can see the current graphics of the game, just will not be able to access the newest content.

For the record, Hib is not easy mode.  Vamps are the best soloers, but they were designed that way.  You will not be able to play that class with the trial.

In all honesty, Hib is easymode.  I tried it out on a friend's account to test and easilly took a keep with 7 in group away from 16 or so mid defenders.  They stood no chance.

While I feel for you since you've been playing Hib for along time, all these people picking up and switching realms because they just figured out how truely easy seiging with Hibs is are making it seem even moreso overpowered.  Watch the population in Molvik/Leirvik for a good indicator of what's about to happen to NF.

On the plus side, though... you can tell the new people to hib b/c they usually run vamps and have absolutely no clue what they are doing  ;)

In Leirvik Hib is usually outnumbered by Albs.

I have seen groups of 6-8 Mids take towers as well.  Same with albs for that fact.

What hibs have are animists.  A class that seems simple to play, but is not that simple too play.  But what Albs and Mids see is a forest of mushrooms that keep hitting them.  Stationary attackers/defenders do help a lot in siege.  If there is a hole in the wall, Hibs have an advantage in being able to put up shrooms.  You can cast at a safe distance and keep people out.

That is not the same as "easy" mode.  Easy means easy to play, easy to level, somehow "less" challenging.  If you can keep up with all of the buttons and know how to spec, then Vamp might count as "easy" mode, but I would say the same for a necro.  This is not the same as having a better siege class than the other realms.

I feel sorry for Mid that they got shafted with Pet Spam classes.  But your classes are not weak.  Mid's problem has been that it has attracted and maintained a population that is more interested in 8 vs 8 than in siege warfare.  This is in part because of the classes Mid has available.

This is what  Hibs have to deal with.  If take my Bainshee out to Thid to goof off and try using more than 1 spell (only 1 spell really useful in PvE for me soloing).  Everyone is now after me.  I thought they tried to kill my animist often, but nothing like trying to play a Bainshee.  Bainshee's have no usable CC in any line for PvE.  Vamps have such a bad rep that it is hard to get an RvR group.  You are targeted after in RvR by people wanting revenge for getting rolled in Thid.  Animists are decent in open field, but really need some type of siege to be of the most use.  Pets take up a lot of realm points from you though.  You are better off with any other caster for realm points.  Elds suck compared to Fire Wizzies or Runnies.  Bards are a great class, but Minstrals I think are better for groups.  They can stealth and climb walls.  If Druids do not spec for healing they will not get groups.  Mentalists have the worst spec ever - mentalism.  Valewalkers are squishy tanks.  I think even Valkeries are better than VW at this point.  MoS has ruined playing any assassin in any realm after the BGs.

If you recall a few years ago before NF, but after animists, Hibs were still getting owned.  The change to Hib being dominate is because of changes in NF and not because of classes.

JulianDracos I know your a regular at DAoC and u know the ins and outs of this game, but honestly, IMO, Hibs got the best populasion by far than Alb and Mids, yeah sure, but Hibs def out number us Albs immensley, if you ask any Hib what they got, automatically they say Vamp.

Running in frontiers, who owns alot, hmm Hibs. Hibs is the easy button is what I meant by what I posted earlier, alot more ppl choose this faction than any other, hence more zerg hibs then albs on any server.

Vamp is the easiest class to solo, at least to me when I experience it.

What Cluster are you playing on?  At any given time on my cluster any of the 3 realms could have DF.  One day I will log on and Hib will have a lot of keeps, then next day it is Alb.  It is back and forth between those two realms.  Sometimes even Mids come out and play.  Mids do not seem to do it that often unless they are defending their realm, but every one in awhile I will log in and go WTF because I will see a lot of blue in NF.

I have never seen anyone in Hib go they have a Vamp.  They are great for solo PvE.  They are good in the lower level BG.  In NF I do not see Vamps nearly as often.  The contstant need for power, leather armor, and simply lack of people willing to group with one has made them not the best class for NF.  It is ceratinaly not a "weak" class, but I see more less of them in NF on my cluster than any other tank.

When I want to play my Vamp in NF, I go camp Alb PoC.  One on one and being able to run in and out makes it so that I can get some decent realm points and annoy the hell of the Albs trying to level.  I can usually take 2 of them out.  I run up and kill one in the back, run out and hide.  Wait for one of them to come out, usually a Inf or something like that.  I then jump them and kill it.  I then usually have to run away and sit and rest for a bit.

If I could get into a good 8 man group I might do well.  In zergs it is death.  In most PUG it is death.

I do not know why people are choosing Hib.  I do not think it has much to do with Vamps, but it might be espically for new players.  I tried the other 2 realms on Classic and simply the community was so bad in the other realms I went and played Hib on the Classic servers.  It was much more civil and helpful than the other 2 realms.  Then after a month when people went back to playing the regular servers I went back because that is where I wanted to be.

As much as I would want people to choose Hib (if you can't kill the Albs then breed them out), but at the same time having more Albs and Mids is in Hibs best interest.  We have more people to go kill :)  My shrooms need a lot of food . . .
