Originally posted by kimmar Are they shortening the hours that they are at school while getting rid of recess? I could undestand it if they do that. A lot of schools try to save money and taking out a whole hour a day or so with no lights on and the AC/Heater not clicking on would probably save a district tons.
But if they're not shortening the day then I wonder what they are adding in recess times place.
I am getting ready to do my student teaching in the Fall. I have done a lot of obersvation and mentoring and it seems teachers are rushed to get in all the things they have to do each day. I think a lot of it has to do with discipline problems that are coming into the school from home. Especially when a teacher spends 90% of their time doing classroom management instead of being able to do what they were trained to do. If it seems hard to believe that parents aren't disciplining their kids these days or letting them get away with anything then just go do some mentoring or volunteering in your local school district sometime. It's a real eye-opener.
But I don't see it happening anyway. Kids have to play. Really, play time is learn time for kids.
Wrong. TRIX ARE FOR KIDS!
School is more of a daycare center for the parents, somewhere to dump their kids while they party, get drunk, or sometimes work.

Wow, I want to live in your world for a day...drop kids off at school, then go party and get plastered. You know how much fun those Wednesday afternoon keggers would be?! That would make the week go by quicker though.
If by the way you are serious for some dilussional reason, these "Daycare" centers would obviously do a better job of upbringing and educating kids that what their parents could/would do. And the younger kids would not see it as a "Daycare Center" for them selves. I think the majority of younger kids in elementary school enjoy showing up each day. It really isn't until 8-9th grade that kids start becoming truely disinterested and bitter about going to classes. It then becomes the "necessary evil" they muct indure.

Welcome to this brave new world where women are persuing their own careers or are just as bad as men always looking out for #1, and if the kids arent aborted, they get dropped off at daycare centers (school).
Although my condition in school has no meritous value in this thread, I will still entertain any notion that I was somehow socially deformed or malconstructed. Your proof is you cynical skepticism that anyone normal would disapprove of recess.
Recess is a time for bullies to lash out their frustrations and resentment away from the prying eyes of a teacher. It pits the helpless fool against the taunting brat. It does not strengthen friendship; it is like Lord of the Flies, where the weak are savagely crippled. I have seen it happen many times, and I was neither the victim nor the predator, as you so cryptically assumed.
Furthermore, one does not need a climate-controlled gym to work out. Last I checked, good old fashioned jogging three miles makes a man out of any spoiled bastard such as you. What, 16 years old and can't concentrate? You are a weak sissie. It would come as no surprise if you prey on those weaker than you during this supposed free time.
Children need to be taught and severely disciplined. Back in the days of belts, ADD was insignificant. Coincidence? Yes.

15 minutes? I get at least 1.5 hours everyday, too bad my school finishes at 4.... 5 if I got sports club and im only in my 7th year. I play soccer, basketball, softball (like baseball but pitch is slower to avoid accidents), volleyball, swimming, olympic stuff and cross country.....

I think a big grown-up who needs to use violence or "prey on the weaker" on their child is a "big sissie". My Dad told me to never hit a woman (I never did, but he wanted to make sure). I would assume the same would apply for children. You need to teach them love, and honesty; you won't get that from smacking them. You think their going to open up to you about their lives if their afraid your going to belt them? Sorry buddy.
Besides, children learn from their parents and if their getting beaten then what kind of implications is that going to have in their teens an adult lives?
Anyways, I know this is more about teachers than parents, but if a parent is ok with their child getting smacked by the teacher then there's something wrong here.

As the above poster has referenced in previous posts, he was a significant threat in the classroom--throwing desks and chairs if he was not satisfied. I think an intimidating male should fight fire with fire, in that case.
Should children be beaten for talking back? No. Those who willfully chose to disobey should be reprimanded more harshly than they currently are.

If it weren't for recess, I would have had self-esteem problems. I was the ostracized child, you see. The other kids didn't like me, didn't want me around, wouldn't let me play their reindeer games. But then came recess....and dodgeball! The natural pent up rage and frustration came to bear, and behold my youthful form was dodgeball master! I would take on entire teams, alone, and come away victorious. I had no equal in dodging, ducking, diving, dipping, or indeed dodging!
No seriously, I was really that good, and you didn't have to play if you didn't want to. They don't play team sports so much because they're afraid to hurt kids feelings when they loose. Better they learn how to deal with it now than in the future. You can't win at everything (I sucked at baseball and hated every PE class we had to play it in).
