Is This What RF Online Is?

I watched this game since it's creation, but forgot it almost completely, until, low and behold, I was stareing right at the box for it in GameStop. The only thing that kept me from picking it up right there was the fact it was a PC-DVD game, and I don't have a DVD reader (Cause I have an Xbox... d'oh). Being the "savvy" MMO-er that I am, I decided I'd wait a bit and make sure I knew what I was getting into.

This game has a hell of a lot of mixed reviews, and the good ones (both good "Don't get" and good "Get now") are strewn loosely between a mix of "OMFGBBQ THIS GAME IS T3H SUCXK" and "I HEART ANIME/RFO"...

That said... Playstyle/Grinding sounds a lot like FFXI grinding (which is the reason I left that game). PvP sounds a tad bit like DAoC without content. Graphic/Soundwise, it looks amazing.. and the Accertia race (Looks like the Android "Casts" from Phantasy Star, thus awe-diddly-pwesome) were a major factor in me almost getting the game.

I was big into DAoC, but then again, DAoC had a lot of PvE content that I liked. I was HUGE into CoH/CoV which probably don't translate into this game.. I just respect that game so much that any chance to plug is needed. I played EQ/EQ2 for a little while, FFXI for less, Earth And Beyond for as long as I could, and a whole slew of other MMO's/MMO betas...

I need a new one, RF Online looked like something to keep me occupied till the new Phantasy Star game came out (Grind ahoy).

Anyway, that's a lot of rambling.. Can some intelligent gamers post something that applies to what I said (Being that my assumptions are true/unture) and give me a good bottomline on what to expect...

Or, would some king among men possibly post link to client download and let me borrow there account for.. one day? I'm not gonna do anything bad to anyones chars or such, or even play em, and as collateral, I'll give you my accounts/PW's if needed.. (WriteNate@gmail.com)..

Hey, i'm one of many SWG refugees and I decided to give RFO a try. The first thing you must decide before playing this game is, will you be prepared for a massive grind?. Leveling from 1-30 might not be that hard but 30+ takes a while, atleast the Chip Wars will keep you busy from 25+.

I agree with you that there are many mixed reviews and alot of them are 1 sided.  These reviews tend to complain about the game not having PvE and Roleplay aspects, then go on and on about how long the grind is. This game was designed in the way that PvP is a factor in your factions currency, morale and strength. To go out and say it's a crap game because it's not PvE/RP friendly is just unfair.

Here's a good review, explains the good and bad things.

Along with the games fantastic (imo) PvP it also has nice graphics, so if you don't mind a bit of a grind then i'd suggest taking atleast a look and see how you like it. If you dislike PvP and enjoy PvE/RP then stick to those other games like EQ2 and World of Warcraft.

Do not hate it, but instead embrace the diversity.

I suggest wait for a trial before you spend US$ 44.99 in a game you cant like. Just play the MMORPG you playing atm is the best thing to do.

The GamePro review GrimReapez posted was probably one of the most comprehensive. I am enjoying the game but I also do not mind grinding. I like the sense of accomplishment you get my haveing a level 30 character with Maxed skills instead of a hastily leveled character. You can level somewhat quickly to 35 though if you want to, so the grind isn't terrible if you do not want it to be.

I find other people in the game to be intelligent and courteous. Some are saying this game does not reward grouping, this is basically crap. In fact, I level much faster in a group than I do solo. The only time I solo is when I am raising skills. Even then I still socialize with people to relieve the tedium of the grind. I guess if you are an anti-social person who does not speak to anybody and does nothing but hit monsters while they solo, then yes you may find grinding really boring. Luckily, if you are even a somewhat sociable person, there are plenty of people to talk to.

I like the PvP in this game and I find it entertaining. It forces team play and 1 vs 1 PvP is pointless because the opponment can just spam potions. Chaining damage skills and combos together helps but is still much more effective in a team. There is a contribution point system that allows for people to compete for race leader. Also you can get kill points which can be turned directly into your race leader for currency. The chip wars are very fun and you can get some very massive battles depending on the turnout (especially on the weekend).

Some people complain that PvP is only a three time a day event. This is completely untrue. If you want to PvP you can bring it to your enemy anytime you want. They will certainly bring it to you eventually.

This game isn't for everybody, but then again, I haven't really played a game that was. Unless of course that game were so vanilla that no one could really have a problem with it. Then again that sort of game isn't terribly exciting either. I rate games on one factor, whether or not I am having fun playing it. Since I am having fun playing this game, I would say that this is a good game.
