This game is very, very, very social. If you solo in games you may want to play this game still. I solo'd constantly in games, but when I was forced to group I had more fun than I ever had and really felt like I was part of the world. I would encourage anyone who prefers to solo to give the game a go, you may find grouping in it more satisfying than you would expect.
As for those who are hell bent on soloing...

I have made the best friends I ever made in a game in this one. If your afraid of that dont bother playing this game.
Hell bent on soloing? Hell, you cant even solo 1 day if you wanted to, much less one mob at higher lvls. I agree the games should be somewhat forced grouping but FF is just rediculous. It wouldnt be so bad if when grouped you cant have anyone more than 1 lvl above or below you or it screws exp.

Someone who is hellbent on soloing is someone who wont play a game cuz you cant solo, not even trying to group. If someone who mostly solo's plays FFXI and bares with the forced grouping they will most likely make some friends and have people that you keep coming back to the game for.
Anyone who doesnt like that FFXI is forced should just play another game and concede to "this game isnt for me." Everything that the game is aimed to do, it does. Everything that the game is aimed for it has in spades and its only getting better.
hey Zohar, would you consider helping out an old player, I'd be starting from level 1 and be a taru taru thief (hopefully dragoon/thief once I get high enough). I'd only need a few thousand to start out to get some decent equipment. Thanks in advance.
