I don't think anybody knows yet but i susspect it'll be mostly designed for smaller skirmishes but it definately carrys the capacity for huge fights over stargates and stuff... we don't really know enough about the game yet to judge whats going to happen.
There was a dev statement somewhere that they are gearing content toward teams of 4 just like the SGC teams. Possibly some instancing, etc etc. The rest is mostly speculation now.
There are alot of people who want a very appearent line between FPS and RPG games. My classification is that a RPG should not heavily rely on your physical skills as a person, but your avatar's skills. A FPS...well, I am sure you can guess. Then a game like Oblivion comes along. Is it a RPG or a FPS? Well I say its both...and I don't know how well it is going over with people.
With a MMO though, I think this is dangerous new water. Yes, there have been several MMOFPS type games but they have all failed horribly, but it would seem as it other circumstances that caused the failure...not the FPS part of it. I think that neocron game would be a good exaple. I don't believe the system was given a full chance. I for one love the idea.
I remember a few years ago I got flamed horribly in AO chat when I asked for opinions on adding a touch of FPS to the game...ouch. I just thought it completely stupid watching my avatar and a MOB stand there a meter apeart shooting each other with pistols. (I still like AO to this day...but I play only melee characters). So, I am afriad that this kind of combat style may drive off a lot of players. If you are a FPS nut, there are so many to chose from with more and more coming out every day and with them there is only the box price. So there has to be some middle ground. I think I kind of like Tabula Rasa's idea for combat...but we'l see when I actually try it out.
Hehe... If you want boring combat in AO, play a Fixer like this: run HoT, target health-aura dynaboss, burst. Hope you brought sandwiches.
I don't mind ranged combat in MMORPG's at all. There have been ranger-classes in fantasy games since forever. It'd be neat to see a game take that to the main combat type instead of melee weapons. Also, MMO's usually rely on RPG dynamics because that's where their roots are. D&D, not the Society for Creative Anachronisms.
If they go with FPS combat (which I'd like too) I they leave the squad/bot system behind. Dammit, number 3 is stuck on the wall again... No don't throw a grenade! Its a wall! *Bot#2 was killed by the StarGate kersploosh.* Oh noooo...
It could be really neat with an RPG system though. You could have a Rank in the SGC that let you take different squad members with different specialties like languages or technology or heavy weapons. For the Replicators, it could be something like number of blocks. Though the Goa'uld would probably be the most fun... Number of worshippers? Hehe.
I hope that the Goa'uld get "eye glow" and "scary voice" commands.
Originally posted by kalasas so what is the gameplay gonna be like?? is it gonna be a rts? like build up your world and engage in huge combat- or small tactical squads of 5 or so?
or is it rpg with 1 main char?
so far those are the three dif types this game might have..
I hope they make it a mmofps with strategy elements added in as well as the rpg elements that push a story along and make a immersive game.

The problem with MMOFPS (as i see it) is that they are heavily system, connection, and personal skill dependent, while MMORPG's are not. With the MMORPG setup, everyone is basically equal. A person with a top of the line computer would only get the advantage of prettier graphics over someone that plays with a min spec setup. While on the other type, the TOL person has a huge advantage over the min spec guy.
Just my few cents..

If you can't beat 'em, hold 'em off 'till you come up with a better plan.
Person.....It would be good is we had 3rd person view when doing quests and walking around, but have FPS when in battle (like Battlefield 2 but with more health and armour) You would really feel like your in a war then and its down to your skill.
Ships..... If we are able to create/buy/steal ships, something like Eve online would be ok, I dont really care aslong as we get to have massive space battles, and PvP with other factions.
If we do become godlike ingame, owning our own world and stargate would be good, and creating it as we see fit, the more battles and resources we win the better our home worlds are, but I would start with small homes to palace to owning the world (only if you get god like status) and all inbetween.
