What you mean are "ads" in games, which means advertisements.
Adds is short for addition, not advertisement.
As for your question, ads that are relevent and improve submersion of genre and game type are good, ads that take away from the genre, settings and ambiance are bad.
Example. Real life company ads littered throughou the rink in NHL 2007, good, its realism goes way up because you would see that in a real life ice rink.
Example. Ad for coke in WoW or any fantasy based mmorpg, is bad, because it detracts from the fantasy world and throws you back into reality.
I voted for only if it is a free game. I would have no problem with advertising in that case, as the developer would have to generate income some way.
Advertising in a pay to play game is bad business. Pay channels such as HBO and Showtime, etc don't run ads for Ford or Pepsi, because they generate revenue from your subscription money. Same thing applies for an MMO.
Since this is in off-topic I'll also meantion Swat 4
When Swat 4 was patched to Version 1.1 they included some sort of ad-system, that would connect to the internet and check which ads that should be posted in the game. You would walk around in a nightclub with 50-cent posters, or an office with computer "playing" a certain game or such(meaning just having the ad on the screen) That's unacceptable. You pay good money for a full-priced PC-game and then they fell they need to make more money.
So, if the game is for free, I can understand that they need advertising to keep running.
Is it really free though? Don't we always end up paying for the advertising costs in the end? We pay for ourselves to be manipulated by advertisers when they raise the price of the products. That's why Lucky Charms cost more than Malt-O-Meal Marshmallow Safari.

No longer visiting MMORPG.com.
At 1st I was like "WTF" adds in game no way. But I'm whatevers as long it FREEEEE.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it...
taking this to things besides MMORPGS i think there fine as long as it isnt bladant, and doesnt interfere with the game.
like if all the batteries in a game are duracell i really dont care, because that is minor.
however if like in total recall(a movie i know but best example i could think of) every damn restaurant is a taco bell then i dont like it.
98% of the teenage population does or has tried smoking pot. If you''re one of the 2% who hasn''t, copy & paste this in your signature.

As long as it is context it can actually add to the immersion.
