Wow. . .it looks like Auto Assault made it past WoW in the game list area, with an 8.2.  While the community might seem low now, I bet you that in a week or a month, this game will have double the people playing it.  I'm going to wait a week or so and see how people like it then. . .if it's still impressing me then, then I'll just ahve to go buy it.  At first, I was saying to myself...this game will suck.  Now I'm saying to myself, maybe I should give it a try.  Maybe some of you can list the pro/cons of this game so far so I can decide if I want to get it.

Also, is this game anything like Twisted Metal?

Look, the way I see it is this: All the whiners and complainers and pvp freaks who call the game carebear would never give this game a proper shot. They'd play to lvl 4 and quit. The game IS Twisted Metal online heh, there is no other way to compare it. You log in, level 10 times in a span of a few hours (or more) and just go around  blowing crap up everywhere. The loot in the game is extremely "good" which I like. I don't have to go into some uber dungeon of doom and kill a boss where I don't even know it's HP 1000 times to maybe get my drop. The people in the game, while it may seem low, are all friendly and love the game. Just now I gave some complete stranger like 4 rare weapons and a couple of nice armor pieces. I never once had people do that for me in WoW or any other MMO.

If you have any other questions, shoot. Heh.

  • Short version:

pros: fast paced lvling, soloability, post-acolyptic story, cross server arena pvp, w/ladder in works

cons: low server pops, flawed endgame pvp in GZ, No economy whatsoever atm

    longer:
It has way more depth than twisted metal I wouldnt even compare both. Simply put, this MMO is the best ive played so far. Ive been playing the beta and pre-order headstart and just lost acess today. The only reason I havent bought the game is because of the server population, PvP and low server pops just dont go together...  Im mainly a solo guy, so PvM wise the game was perfect for me, in the first 60 lvls (which only took ~5 days of playtime) I only had to convoy (team) 2-3 times to kill some boss which I did too low damage and would outheal me, but not be able to kill me. The graphics are awesome, the story while I havent really stopped to read and enjoy it seems really good, the PvP is pretty balanced but still rare. You have alot of character slots too, something like 10 per server so you can experiment alot and make alts for different brackets pvp.

You dont really need to grind youll spend most of your time doing missions and the maps are pretty big. Arena fighting is great, allows you to fight against people from different servers. Theres also a ladder system in the work. Ground Zero which is the endgame PvP area, was unpopulated since only ~3-4 people on our server were past 60. Its really flawed right now, its kinda like planetside bases caping except theres no link which spreads PvP all across the map. Caping only takes 15s to do and you dont have a "grace" time which you own the base, it can get caped right after and you dont get any warning its being caped nor have time to go defend it. Hopefully this will be worked on in the future, a "link" system which forces you to cap bases in order would definitly make it more interesting...

For Crafting I havent really done much. Reason is simple I wanted to enjoy the gameplay before seeing if I wanted to buy or not. The crafting system is fun, lots of different recipes but since drops of good and rare stuff is so high its not really usefull. Other than the occasional ornaments which needs to be made theres not much point in spending time in it atm. While its still from my early experience, selling and buying was virtually non-existant, no economy whatsoever mostly due to people lvling I guess or the fact the game doesnt have any auction house system. Ive heard its something they plan on adding in the future so youll have to spend alot of time using the old "wts xxx" in a trade channel which is zone restricted, really frustrating.

If you liked twisted metal chances are you will like the game, the skill-based part of the game where you actually have to aim thoses weapons is pretty much the same, but the toolset you have to kill is much wider, things such as roots, debuffing your opponent, stuns, dots, heals, etc etc, the usual mmo skillset. Takes way more tactics and knowledge. In the end without a larger playerbase your better off in twisted metal tho the game really feels like a single player with a monthly fee atm.

Game has so much potential, I personally rank it as #1 and will be back once/if the populations grows. If they ever get some free trials rolling im sure it will bring alot of people in, and hopefully some life and economy from the crafting commodities theses people could sell higher lvl people.

btw PvP is totally optional, in the endgame zone groundzero which is the only contested area in the game, you can go lvl peacefully in a carebear instance with only your faction.

IMHO, saying Auto Assault is like Twisted Metal Online is kinda dumb.  I mean, sure, you drive around, you shoot stuff, but one is a RPG of character stats and skills, and the other is a game of player coordination and reflexes.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

Good. . .although Twisted metal was ok, I never really got into it.

Beside of the gameplay...How do the cars handle, do they feel more like SF Rush on the N64 or like the vehicles in BF2, where there is more physics. . .and when you jump off a cliff or something, do you actually feel like your car can flip?

Sorry, just curious how the cars handle.  This game sounds really fun, and very tempting to buy.  Although, I am a college student and I need to be caution not to spend too much.  Like I said before, I'm going to give it a week or so and see how it still stands.

    Thanks for your input everyone!

The cars handle ok, some much better than others.  Every chassis is different.  I can't compare to either of those games, but the only problem some people have with the handling is that it's on the easy side.  You tap the breaks and come to an instant stop, you don't skid or drift when you turn, etc.  The game uses the Havok2 physics engine, though.  If you drive off a cliff, your car can flip.  Not sure I understand the question.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

Well when I or someone else compares it to Twisted Metal, I personally wouldn't say it is an exact fit per se. There are obvious differeneces to be sure. Of course the most obvious is that AA is an MMORPG while Twisted Metal is not. That alone is a big difference.

Let's put it this way, unless Sony decides to make a MMO out of Twisted Metal anytime soon (which, heh you never know) Auto Assault is as close as we are going to ever get

The game itself uses the Havok physics engine so yeah you're gonna have a lot of car flipping and debris flying around. Each chassis has different stats will determine how it will drive. I have a huge semi-truck which has a small turn radius and doesnt spin out much but weighs a ton so it smashes through everything and isn't jarred much. On the other hand there are much more mobile vehicles than drift and spin but easily go flying off of hills and get bumped around a lot by enemy vehicles.

Calling it Twisted Metal online doesn't do it justice because it is a large persistent world with character development. Each race has 4 classes but each race plays different and has different skills so in effect there are 12 different archtypes.

Crafting is done pretty well for those who enjoy that. As you drive around destroying everything in sight, you will collect various scrap objects that can be used for crafting or selling it off to a crafter. You can only select a certain amount of crafting fields so you cant eventually make every single item. Good, in my opinion.

The game is still new and still has a few issues that need to be ironed out but it is definitely a fun experience. I didn't expect a whole lot out of this game but it had turned out to be quite a gem and I'm having a blast with it. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who has even the slightest interest in it. Do yourself a favor and give this one a shot.

Pros: Insane run and gun fun, cars are pretty easy to handle, no "grindy" feel, good story line for Biomeks and Mutants, very fast pace, not crowded, no server wait, explosions!  Nice drop rates, cool cars, good graphics, stuff blows up! Voluntary PvP only. No death penalty except time.

Cons: Some lag issues, lack of story for Humans, crafting system overly complex and not very rewarding, lack of emotes make RP aspect flat, no AH (tho will be implemented later), no mail system. Grouping (convoy) system not great, servicable, but not great.

I got a taste of this game back in January on the Beta event weekend advertized on Penny Arcade. I was *immeadiately* hooked and pre-ordered in the first day. My husband sat in that same weekend and I ordered for him too. The pre-order gave us Beta access and we've been playing since and both love it.

I will be honest and say if grouping is really important to you and you don't like to solo than you will be adissapointed as it's really not necessary to group much (except some instances and then just very hard solo) so pick up groups not as redily available as some would like.

I don't PvP so haven't tried arena (until high levels PvP only happens in arena) but they already had one tournament this weekend so looks like that might be a robust system.

Just really good messy drive like mad and shoot like crazy and try to kill before your killed, or rather "wreck".

I plan on recommending strongly to all my gamer friends.

It's kind of like Twisted Metal in that you drive around in your vehicle and the combat is real-time..... BUT, I don't consider it to be otherwise close to Twisted Metal as the action is actually stat based.  You don't have to worry about armor, defense/evasion, accuracy, resistances, and weapon skill/damage in Twisted Metal.  To me, this is Auto Duel online in a Wasteland/Fallout environment.  If they made Auto Duel into a MMOG, I can't imagine it being that much different than this.  That's a HUGE plus for me since I'm an avid Auto Duel fan.  (For those that haven't played Auto Duel, it was a mid-80's game based on the Steve Jackson CAR WARS pen and paper game).

I got in the beta for this game really early on... and I hated it.  I was playing it like a year ago and was bored out of my mind.  I decided to give it another shot around February of this year to see what improvemetns they'd made and this time I was hooked.  I've already bought a six-month membership; I dig it that much.  They just need to make a few small improvments - primarily with group/team support - and it would be near-perfect.  The action is fast and fun, it's got a lot of depth with interesting, well-written stories and a meaty crafting system, and the graphics are gorgeous.  I've played CoH/CoV, EQ, EQ2, WoW, DAoC, SWG, etc. and this is the only MMOG to get me leaning out of my chair on turns and hollerin' when I win.  :D

This game sure is a sleeper hit.  Seriously, it just came and took over and I can see this game getting big too.  It's just so different.  I'm thinking about picking it up tomorrow after my classes and give it a whirl.  It's good to get away from all the nightelf / Darkelf crap that all mmorpgs want to do these days.  Finally someone went off on a branch to plant a seed.

I give props to the developers of this game, seriously...they did something so "outrageous" in the MMO world and it seems to work, slowly, but it's working.

The only thing I think I might be disappointed about this game is that there is no "death pentalies"  I'm a old MMO gamer from the UO days and that was one thing that I loved about UO...the ability to loot/steal from people.  But hey, not ever game can be the same.

One quick question though. . .can you exit your vehicle?  and if you can, what do you do?  Can you battle outside the vehicle?  Thanks in advance guys...

    MaeEye

p.s. Another thing, I've never talked to such a great group of people. . .everyone's so much fun and not much whinning at all.  Your all just accepting everything how it is...unlike your sterotyped WoWers.  I appreciate the playerbase in Auto Assault.

Yeah - they sure did go off the beaten path with this game.  When I'm playing, what never ceases to amaze me is the physics.  I mean, I'm hauling ass along at 100 mph, yet the environment is fully collidable.  You hit a house at that speed, it's going to practically explode, send you veering off direction, and slow you down.... well, it does all those things.  When you combine that with ramming other players at full speed and the game properly figuring how both cars will react, it's really quite an acheivement.

As for the death penalty, yeah, I wish it were stronger too.  Although honestly, even though there's no death penalty, I still avoid dying like the plague.  I'd rather not waste my time dying, healing up, and trekking back to my location when I can just duck out of the combat and heal up on the spot.

And yes, you can exit your vehicle - although not on the highways.  You exit them in the cities.  It was a really smart move by NetDevil because I don't feel like I'm just a car - I feel like I'm a mutant living in a vibrant world who drives a car to blow shit up.   When on foot, you can craft, get misssions, and buy and sell goods.
