Best RPG game ever (not mmo) FF7? Neverwinter Knights? Diablo?

Zaxx99Zaxx99 Member Posts: 1,761

Just curious on the responses that I might get here with this question.

We've all debated and seen the debates of all the mmos a million times over now.

But what RPG (any console or PC) qualifies as the best RPG ever?

Thinking of a few that I have seen and/or played - A few huge classics and big hits come to mind...

----------------------

Final Fantasy 3 (NES/DS) or what about the mega popular FF 7? (ps1)

What about Ultima 1 or 2? (PC/Apple II)

How about the spectacular for it's time "Diablo" (PC and later and not quite as good PS1)

Planescape: Torment comes to mind. (PC)

Baldurs Gate 1 & 2, Amazing games (PC)

How about the old SNES "Super Mario RPG"? It was very cool for it's time, no doubt.

Secret of Mana? (SNES)

Fallout 1 or 2? (PC)

How about the recently released Elder scrolls 4: Oblivion? (PC/360) Is it the best ever? What about Morrowind?

Biowares "Neverwinter Nights" perhaps? (PC)

Wanna talk really old school? How about one of the old Bards Tale on the Apple or Commodore 64 from the early 80s? Hehe, for their time they were insanely awesome RPGs.

-----------------------------

... This is just a few that I can think of. There are surely many more I can't even remember or that are passing my memory.. or that I haven't even heard of or tried.

Well, if you must ask my opinion, I will say that in my gaming days, no RPG game ever addicted me and affected me like the SNES "Chrono Trigger" game. OMG. I remember buying that game back in 95 I think it was and paying $79.95 for it at a Target store. It was a lot of money especially 10 years ago... But oh my gawd was that game soooo worth it. Hour after hour after hour I was totally engrossed in that game. I was in the Navy at the time and spent so many hours and weekend nights playing that game. What fond memories I have of its rich story development and unforgettable characters. If any of you love great RPG's and have never played "Chrono Trigger" or heard of it, and you own a SNES or PS1 or PS2, It's well worth it.. though you probably will have to find it on eBay. I'm sure it is a very hard find in any local game shop these days. A true classic for sure.

*************

I'm including a vote... and I know I have probably put some lame selections up there compared to some of the RPGs that will be named, but gosh there are sooo many great RPGs over the history of gaming... so please don't get mad at me and flame my little white ass cuz I forgot your favorite rpg!! Hehe. I'm guessing that "10" will win the count with about 40 different rpgs named for it, but who knows... maybe one I named in the first 9 will win! Remember, this is RPGs only, ppl. MMOs are completely different, so no noobs screaming that some MMO should win please, ugh especially EQ2 or WOW. If any of you come on here saying EQ2 or WoW should be best "RPG" ever... expect to get flamed, heh... and rightfully so! Hehe! Okay vote now and tell us all why you voted the way you did...please! ;)

I think Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals (snes) Suikoden and Suikoden 2 (Playstation) were the best. those are games I had most fun with. tough there are loads of RPG"s that I really liked, like Secret of Mana, Chrono Cross,ff7 and I could go on forever.

*sigh* they don't make RPG's anymore like they used to..

Lunar: Silver Star Story, the Sega CD one with the voices, not the PSX rehash and edit. They ruined the plot to make it more "understandable in the US market" aka made plot holes and added CGI instead of reading a few important things.

Zelda Ocarina of Time Master Quest limited edition version. Tougher than the original. More mobs and harder puzzles.

    No annoying animated GIF here!

super mario rpg definatly one of the greats, ff7 and ff3, chrono trigger and chrono cross were great, lufia 1 is one of my all time favs (hated lufia 2, to much of a puzzle game), dragon warrior, secret of mana was also pretty good. they havent made any really good ones since final fantasy 7 treally. most are good like digital devil saga was aweomse, but compared to games like lufia and chrono trigger, you just cant be the classics.

    Ff7

it was tEh hammer , because it was the milestone of a changing rpg generation, the atmosphere and the characters were all ..greatness , none of the ff's that came after were anywhere near it .

    suikoden 1 and 2.

what a blast ...haven't played the other ones , but the "Please let the series die " comments from some mags say it all...

Fire emblem: rekka no ken for gba

rocked..maybe because it reminded me of suikoden..

i'm out of references for the newer generation because i'm out of gaming since a while.

    just looking for trouble
..anyone got a problem with that..?

I must say neverwinter nights, because of the level editor, as you can do everything but make your own game with it. Hell, even remake some of the other games on this list if you have enough time on your hands.

    FInal Fantasy Tactics.

My favorite storyline and gameplay out of any RPG. The graphics, with their 2D style, are immortal. This is one of the few RPGs that can still entertain me.

Wow, at this point with 16 total votes the choice for the D&D hits "Neverwinter Nights" and "Planescape: Torment" are racking up almost half the votes it seems. We better off a tie breaker between those two...

Which great D&D RPG owns which? (Planescape: Torment - 1999 PC) -or- (Neverwinter Nights - 2000 PC)

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, if it can be classed as an rpg :)

And with some distance behind it Chrono Trigger on spot #2 for me.

  • zhombiezhombie Member UncommonPosts: 160

It comes to a tie for me for best rpg: Planescape: Torment and Eder Scrolls: Daggerfall. When Daggerfall came out nothing could beat it for originality or non-linear gameplay.

I have never really understood the fascination with eastern style rpgs though. Especially Final Fantasy. I hated the whole series. I don't know, it just bored me. Best eastern styled rpgs I would say are Septerra Core and Chrono Trigger ( liked Cross too).

You have Fallout 1 and 2 in your post but not the poll. They both get my vote.

    1. Fallout 2 (best sequal to a game I've ever played. I'm a ****ing porn star, made-man, prize fighter!)
    2. Fallout 1
    3. Baldur's Gate (and all the expansions)
    4. Planescape: Torment
    5. Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magic Obscura

Played: Age of Conan, DDO, Saga of Ryzom, SWG, DaOC, MxO, EQ2, and so on...

    1. Fallout 1 & 2 (you really can't seperate them)
    2. Might and Magic VII: For Blood and Honor
    3. Baldur's Gate 2
    4. The Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall
    5. Arcanum: of Steamworks and Magick Obscura

Honorable mention: Jade Empire. The best beginning of a game ever. I loved the world, I loved the characters, I loved the artwork, I loved the game mechanics. But it was much, much, much too short, and the final chapters were utterly linear. If it were as large a game as the others on my list, it would've ranked number two.

(And honorable mention for Zork, the game that started it all for me.)

EDIT: Woo, voodookhan! I just noticed you had Arcanum on your list, and exactly where it was on mine. =) Very underrated game. It's too bad more people didn't know about it.

Planescape: Torment all the fcking way.  The game was awesome on so many levels; killer plot twists, superb storytelling, and some of the most unforgettable NPC characters ever.  Like the angel girl Falls-from-Grace or that empty suit of armor that just kept on going after the pally inside died hundreds of years ago.  My most fave game ever.

Still though, all the games in your list are superb in their own right.  Which is right now leaving my thinking with why dont we get games this excellent anymore! (TES: Oblivion exempt of course)  And why cant MMO developers play these games so they can GET A FREAKING CLUE!

I don''t really know when Humankind will die out but i''m guessing about 6 years before WOW.

A very underrated game. I actually bought that game on a whim while in the store. Knew nothing about it, just read the box and looked at the box pics. One of the best "on a whim" purchases I ever made!

A lot of great f'ing RPG games for sure. Most of them offered to us in the 90s until ofcourse the recent Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. And as much as I like Oblivion and it's stellar graphics... I still find it slightly lacking of something that so many great RPGs in the 90's had. I don't know quite what it's missing though. Perhaps it just almost feels too "serious" and lacks that "cutesy heart & soul" that I miss from so many RPGs of yesteryear. I dunno.

I haven't ever really played Fallout 1 or 2 myself, nor have I played some of the other RPGs that a lot of you are mentioning like Arcanum and some others. There's just so many great RPGs no doubt.

Which is really why I started this whole thread. To get you all really thinking about the quality, the heart, and the soul that so many of these beloved RPGs contained. ...And this really was a "setup", I have to be honest. Now, I ask you to be honest as well....

    *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

'Cuz here is my BIG QUESTION now people....

Do you find that todays' current mmorpgs have any where near that level of detail, heart, and soul put into their code? Is it just me, or do pretty much all of the mmorpgs today feel pretty damn bland and colorless and uhhhh "blah" in comparison to some of these great RPGs of 5, 10 or even 15 years ago on much less powerful consoles?

...That's why I started this thread and I'm really curious to see what some of you have to say and how you answer this question. Thanks.
