I've been skimming over the previews and screens of this game and it looks pretty cool.
Will there be building on a personal scale? For instance, can I make my own little proficient corner of the forest and, for the most part, avoid fighting? Like a small village with a house, and farm, and blacksmith, and whomever else chooses to join me. Will there be NPC slaves I can order around to protect my and do the monotonous resource gathering for me?
Sounds like Roma Victor, I know, but this is the part of any MMORPG that I like.

My suggestion to you for the answer of your question is to go to bymitra.com and use the search there. It is a search engine of dev quotes basically. I would gladly get the answers for you, but I am unable to ctrl+c with firefox at the moment, maybe you can help me fix that problem :P

I cant speak for what the end result will be, but I can speak on my interpretation of the game in regards to these things.
We are very aware of the importance of communities and their strength both as you mentioned from people who want extra curricular activies and an investor standpoint. People who are involved in communities will stick with the game much longer, this is a proven fact and one of the reasons why we encourage guilds. This is not to punish someone or take away the ability to be a free spirit but merely encourage the creation of player groups. To that end when it comes to the player villages and the like I do want to see them be hubs for player communities. So while I do not have details as far as if you can decorate or what all things will do I think that we will try to make the housing somewhat able to have individual touches.
As far as crafting and other lets say social non combat driven game mechanics. While we want to see these things happen, they are not the focus. Star Wars Galaxies and Horizons focused on social dynamics and crafting to the point that most of the rest of the game suffered from it. I am not saying the social aspects of Conan will suffer, but I am saying that if I have to make choices between those things and something I consider to be core to the game and the world I will choose the latter.
Also I feel you guys are making some wrong connections. The player village and hiving system and the massive PvP territory holding, castle building, etc systems while related mechanics are seperate entities. Both bring with them access to resources and various other bonus's but they are not the same thing.

Yes, we have social classes and trader classes. These are available to any player, but only from level 40. Conan has a major focus on action, violence and exploration in the beginning. Getting to level 40 should be fairly easy, though, and once there, people can chose from four different social/prestige classes. Here you can build houses, weapons, armor, jewelry, potions or other consumables.

Combat is at the cornerstone of the experience in Conan, and we have focused a lot on coming up with a great real-time combat system. There will however be a multitude of additional features in the game, and that includes things like player-made houses, guild houses and crafting (once you get further in the game). Exploration and going on adventures is a vital part of the game, and we hope to give you some amazing experiences traveling through Hyboria. We are pulling all the plugs in terms of graphical beauty, world design and the sounds and music which will surround you, so exploring in Conan will hopefully become a journey like you have never seen before in an online RPG.

The game will feature clans / guilds and other social elements. The players can build houses, guild halls, PvP buildings. I am not sure exactly what type of buildings the players can construct, structures to raise or plants to sow making it into the final title. Rest assured though, the players can define their own world in a very detailed and personal way in Conan.

If you read those quotes from last to first (chronologically), it seems they are starting to reconsider the housing/crafting aspects of the game. Super....gonna have another unfinished released product on our hands again. Wow...that's different.
I really hope I'm just reading between the lines too much...
