I've been playing EVE for 3-4 months now, so in EVE terms, I'm still a newb. I created a Caldari character, but since my friends were all Minmitar, I moved immediately to Minmitar space after I rolled out my toon. But my friends have been very scarce as of late, and it's been getting really hard to get enough standing to move on to lvl 3 missions, so I decided to move back to Caldari space. I gathered all my belongings on a Badger and went on my way.... On the way, I stepped on .4 space and was immediately podded.
Now, I know that PVP is a major part of EVE gameplay, but is this considered PVP??? An elite Battle Cruiser taking out an industrial ship seems hardly like competition, let alone fair-play. What justification does someone have for that? It's ridiculous when you think about it. I can think of no real reason why someone on a battle cruiser or a battle ship should take down a frigate or an indy, it just seems like virtual bullying to me.
I hope I don't come across too whiney.... I've been loving EVE from the start. The mechanics, the market playing, the possibilities seem endless. But things like this really turn me off on the game.

Only reason why EVE is so mega hyped is because it gives huge unfair advantage to OLD PLAYERS.
So they
1.Dont want to leave , because this godliness is ... well prety enjoyable
2.They need new blood to GANK so they advertize game like mad.

There are a bunch of people that hang out in .1-.4 looking to pod anything that moves unfortunatly. This limits what you can do safely quite a bit until you are ready for 0.0 where the solo griefer generally gets owned by corporate patrols(the main reason why they hang out in low sec empire).
Only thing you can do is learn from your mistakes and press on.

It sucks to lose a bunch of stuff to a situation like that but it sure teaches you to be vigilant in a hurry. You have to realize that you aren't safe anywhere in EVE.

Ohhh!!! I'm counting on it... If I last that long on the game that is, that's why I was so against kill rights being changed for 30 days only. I can't possibly start flying BC's in 30 days... I made a folder on my buddies list called "shit list" and added all the people that have podded me there for "future reference"
I also agree that it has nothing to do with old and new players... I know that someone that knows how to play the game, can easily catch up or even surpass the old players with some imagination and wit. And the person that made the point that I could be carrying a truckload of Zydrine for all they know, also makes a good point. But how do they know that when they blow me up that it will survive? And I've also been podded while running courier missions on a frigate, and that to me is un-justifiable. What could a frigate be carrying that could be of value for someone on a BS?

Well, it's a matter of personal morals and whether they affect a person's game play style. If he's playing a pirate, then he can either be the cut throat, killz all, type, or he can be the extortionist, or... etc., etc. Unfortunately, the art of extortion has been lost for the most part because people gate camp instead of Roid Field hunt... but... a hauler in low-sec probably has something good in it, and if it doesn't then at least the hauler didn't require much ammo to kill. A frigate in low sec could mean several things. Somebody was picking up a BP, or some skill books, or some new gear for their other ship. I would say, next time you fly through low sec, use an afterburner. Gets you to the gate faster and doesn't increase your targeting radius (which means they will still take a long time to target you in anything bigger than a cruiser). Also, equip a targeting jammer(but don't use it until you've been fired on because it is concidered hostility... unless his Sec Stats allow for no consequences). They can't shoot what they can't target unless they have FoF missiles equiped, but they do less damage AND conciderably less damage to frigates AND FoFs might actually start flying at the sentry guns because the sentries will be shooting at the gate camper.

People gank industrials because (1) you don't know what they will drop and (2) they have no business going through low sec without an escort and/or instajump/instadock bookmarks.
People will gank a frigate because a frigate could be (1) carrying expensive stuff like narcotics or hi-end minerals like zydrine that doesn't take up a lot of space but are worth a lot of money or (2) spying or scouting for an attack group that could be coming to take out the pirates.
The bottom line is that once you get to 0.4 and below it gets dangerous and you are liable to get ganked. When our corp is moving anything of any value in 0.4, we have a fleet escort on hand to make sure noone tries anything, and scouts scouting around adjacent systems.
1: Sounds like you traveled through Amamake in your fat Badger. So unless you want to fight set the autopilot to avoid low sec. This isn't possibile when traveling from Minmatar to Caldari space (I think) so pay someone in a shuttle to scout low sec first before you enter the system.
2: I have engaged in piracy and revenge in that are many times, a fat slow Badger would be a nice target for my Vampdom. I like to prey on the weak and harvest thier goodies, not so much for money but for thrills. I will ransom in a belt (I'm into belt piracy) as I give a time limit to pay up, and I pity the fool that doesn't pay.
3: I will pod whenever I can, only for my own twisted pleasure.
4: I have to pirate in a Battleship as anything less would not be enough if the cavalry arrived (I pirate solo). I justify destroying a shuttle as they're the vehicle of choice to transport blueprints in bulk. I only enter a fair fight when I can afford to be podded, actually I only enter any PvP when I can afford to be podded.
5: I have a char with 15mil sp and lvl 5 Bs, when I started over a year ago I was the lowest on the foodchain too. Looking at all the big boys flying about in humungous war machines that could waste me by ejecting thier waste! Thinking I may never catch up with them. Well now 1vs1 I can give most EVE players a change of underwear on a good day, although many have done the same to me (don't tell)!
6: Just mark this one down to experience, it didn't cost you much to learn that lesson believe me. Steer clear of Amamake and its surrounding systems unless you have insta jump bookmarks. Patience is the key in 6 months time you'll be wasting a badger passing through Bosboger and he'll say "Why did you do that I'm just new?" and you'll start this explination

I regularly gate-snipe helpless haulers like yourself at gates all the time (in empire). The more grief I cause, the more i'm entertained.
my in game-name is : pyr8t
Now you're probably thinking: "My fault? How could it have been my fault?!!" Well, whenever traveling in low sec always check your map for ships destroyed/pod kills in the last hour...
There are of course those situations where you just can't help it... but the others, for me at least, there were things I could have done to have prevented it.
killboard rankings
theyre the reason for this and why there is so much ganking. the only real reason, for gankers to extend their e-peen.
real pirates will evaporate your shields and take yer hull down to 25%. as you're scrammed you'll be demanded a sum of ISK dependant on the ship yer piloting, and the length of time youve been playing visible by your employment history
any other reason to just pod someone is to fulfill the persons real life inadequacies by ranking high on killboards or to hear them complain on forums.. neither is profitable or gives them a bigger penis especially in those who dont bother to scan the cargo and just kill anyone who passes by. theyre losing money by blowing ammo, and time by sitting and waiting for someone whos dumb enough not to have instas for the system.

It's pirating. It's allowed. If you don't like it, hide out in high-sec. They make their money, just differently. You don't like it because you're on the recieving end of the bad stick. If you were on the giving end, you wouldn't say any of that. If you don't like pirates, go play a game where death doesn't cost you anything (WoW, CoH/V). The bottom line is Eve is FFA PvP. Ganking somebody isn;t called PvP... it's called Ganking or Pirating or extreme business. Despite the name, it's allowed and can be avoided. Again, WoW and games of the like are much more noob friendly. Eve is for the elite of the MMOers. If you can't stand that then go elsewhere.

I understand where you're coming from, and many players would agree with you. However in EVE where you're really punished for lossing when I engage in piracy a fair fight isn't a really economicaly sound thing to do. If I get fried then I lose about 200mil ISK, so I avoid tough fights. Remember the Lion preys upon the weakest in the herd, not the strongest, expend the least amount of energy with the least risk for the greatest reward.
I will accept duels 1v1 if I trust my foe to keep thier side of the bargin (no friends), but this rarely happens as no-one trusts anyone in EVE. But many still call me a coward, however few of those that call me a coward have the nerve to go 1vs1 against my Dominix

Although it hurts being ganked in EVE and it is not fair and you can call other side cowards and whatever else you want. In the grand picture they are doing their small part to keep the market balanced. Ofcourse they are not doing it to keep market balanced but for their personal gain but they attribute to it. It is the reason why minerals are always needed, production is always building new ships. If there were no gankers the of market side of EVE would be hurting.
Then there is ofcourse the fact that that people are not prepared to pay for their mistakes. If you go into .4-.1 w/o proper equipment and means of getting away you are gambling with fate. Some people just refuse to say, "Damn I was an idiot, it was a stupid thing to do". Instead it is so much easier to say "Well he killed me so it is got to be his fault because he is a coward, a ganker, a piece of crap, etc etc etc....". Is it fair? No. Is EVE fair? No. What is a fair PvP? When there is no PvP, because the looser will always try to come up with an excuse in order not to admit his/her own mistakes.
I am not trying to say that ganking is the right thing to do, but what I am trying to show is that if you get ganked in .4 - .1 in 95% of the cases it your fault, not theirs.
Being pod-killed is just a part of it. it does keep the economic balance. What drives people nuts is that they miner fr X many days to buy a ship and the pirate camped for X many hours to buy a new ship at your expense.
Consentual pvp is called a duel.

look, dont direct your carebear frustrations toward me. I answered the OP. I never said I disagreed with any of it no matter how you want to mince my words and use clever analogies while comparing me to a world of warcraft player.
I still say ganking is not a mechanic, but rather something most people do for killboard rankings. Thats the MY answer to the OP. I dont care if its right or wrong because, its neither. If theres no money to be gained, no corporation function to be stopped, no items to be stolen.. its done for empowerment. and if you get empowered by a video game then you must have some feelings of inadequacy.
ya of course its part of eve and every other ffa, but that wasnt the question.. was it? he wanted to know WHY people do this and this is the only reason I could see for destroying, then podding something worth 0 value to the pirate. Look, I have no problem at all with these people. I just think its funny that they waste so much time when they could go after bigger fish and demand isk or cargo.. but I guess that takes a bit more skill and .. well less need for cyber empowerment and more need to expand your character.
hopefully you see the point here and will stop with the weak attempt to classify me as something im not.
"If you want a picture of the future, imagine a robot foot stomping on a human face -- forever."
Anyone remmember the good old days where pirates did something called ransom? Or you could buy a ticket to a certain gate. Seems these days pirates gate camp just for the fun of it.
Oh well... lost 3 ind lvl 5 to pirates last week. 0.0 worth th profit though .
