Taken from the official INFINITY site :

"Infinity is an open-ended game in which you control a spaceship through the entire galaxy, trying to make a name for yourself. You connect to an online server on which thousands of people are playing, 24H/24. The game does not stop when you log off, but continues to evolve: it is a persistent universe. The game mechanics do not emphasize any particular gameplay style. Combat, trade, exploration, social relationships.. you are free to choose your own carrier path and goals. The only limit is your own imagination!

Infinity is not a traditional role playing game. Although all players are expected to act in concordance with their avatar's motivations, there are no classes or skills to restrict your choices. Combats between spaceships are true real-time, and the outcome is determined by your own intelligence and reflexes. Forget turn-based action and experience the great excitement! "

This sounds like an exciting game, actually. Especially this part "The game does not stop when you log off, but continues to evolve: it is a persistent universe..."

I'd really look into this game more.

Yeah, this is definitally a game I will be looking into.
I've seen it before and it's still about 4-5yrs from completion.

It's supposed to be like EVE and PRE-NG SWG combined.

Those are not actually screen shots, they are renders. There is a difference. :)

The guy who is programming it is a genious; he developed alot of procedurals for it and also posted about it here before.  It simply made peoples jaws drop.  If the people who make EVE are smart they will try and buy this game out since its practically EVE but better.

it looks great, no doubt about that but... ehh... its not really much different from EVE imo. Not if you keep in mind that its still about 5 or so years from launch and who knows what EVE will look in 5 years? So what new does it bring to the table? Planets, sure but:

"Is it possible to walk around your ship or in cities/stations/planets ?"

    "No,
this is not planned at the moment. It could add some depth to the
gameplay, but would need a lot more resources and in-game content than
a small independent team can realistically produce. We prefer to focus
on space and planet surfaces ships-to-ships fights/gameplay. Some
vehicles (flying cars, shuttles, etc..) might be added, too."

So youll still be trapped in your ship? Doesnt sound much different from EVE.

The concept is. Concepts and reality are 2 totally different things.

CCP is working on a "secret project" btw.

Well , from reading the snippet of info that was posted it just doesn't seem like anything special.

Elite style online game is already being done in EVE and i can't see how much different this is.

Also it should be noted that the Star Trek mmorpg would be out by the time this is released.  If done correctly i believe that Star Trek would be more appealing to Sci-Fi mmorpgers than some nameless space trading / fighting game.

As a developer of this game, i posted a thread about it here.. a month ago or two, i think ?

The game is not 4-5 years away from completion. It is planned for release in end 2007.

Those screenshots are not renders, they are unretouched screenshots taken directly from the game in real-time.

Infinity is in the same genre than Eve, so they certainly have many common points. Some differences are:

    - twitch based: you control your ship and attack directly.
    - procedural universe: billions of solar systems to explore, all different.
    - planetary landing: explore the surface of planets with cities, bases to bomb, etc.. Seamless transitions from space to ground ( no loading )
    - newtonian physics, adjusted for easy controlling
    - realistic scales and dynamics of all bodies in a system ( moons orbit planets, themselves orbitting suns, etc.. )
    - etc.. ( check the website ).

The goal with Infinity is to please those who find Eve's gameplay boring, especially at the beginning.

Talk about excellence! Although space games arent one of my favorites this beautiful galaxy will definately entice me to try it out.

My question is, how the hell are you going to fill that space with players when theres already a big competitor around (EVE)?? EVE is much smaller than what you are trying to create and even there is loads of places no one ever goes to. Huge game "world" is definetly a nice feature imo but not if you dont see anyone in weeks.

You must not be the explorer type of player; the one who goes out to discover new things.  I am one of those and I feel constrained in other mmos since I see people everywhere.  Having a large procedural universe like that is a plus because I can find things people have never seen before.  I know there is EVE but there isn't a reward for exploring in EVE; just get to look at nice scenary.

I do like exploring but thats not really the point is it? Or do you think exploring is enough to attract tens of thousands of players to play this game? I find it REALLY hard to believe. I know this game is different from EVE in many ways but my point is, is it different enough? In my view, no. I doubt that those whove played EVE for a long time now and love it are willing to change to this game and yet those are exactly the audience this game is supposed to gather.

Dont get me wrong, i like very much how this game looks and hope it will make it and get zillion players and all but... i find it hard ever happening. I hope im wrong.

    Couple questions.

Economy: How will it be managed? What will be the medium of trade? How will you upgrade your starship. What will be the limits of your upgrade? Will you start out with a shuttle with simple impulse. Later only to gain warp drive and sail the galaxies? Or what will be the detail on that. What will be the depth on that?

Planets: You mentioned something about cities. Pre-rendered, player built, or both? What will be the extent of those cities, and their usability? How will you construct these cities if they are indeed able to be constructed by players.

Planet Resources: Will there be any, and if there are, what kind, their uses, and what will the medium be for extraction from the planet?

Space travel: How realistic will it be? How fast will it be? You seem reliant on physics and realism; how fast in comparison to lightspeed will intergalactic travel be?

The immense reaches of space and alien planets/life: These billions of solar systems. Will they be empty, or will there be anomalies to explore, aliens to contact, civilizations to conquer? Will we be able to have run ins with black holes; explore nebula's; discover wormholes? Will there be auto rendered alien AI that has an evolving culture & civilization, with further breakthroughs in science and space travel & combat? Will there be factions that you can side with, that you can betray, backstab, go renegade, become a pirate?

Finally, I know you mentioned that there would be no avatar movement. Only vehicles. Would there ever be the inclusion of an avatar part of the game? I think to help the surrealism you would want the ability for their to be ground warfare, boarding of ships, firing phasers at each other. Starting out in the deep core mining of the 3rd moon from the 12th planet from the sun in Aplha Centauri VI or whatever; and then slowly gaining enough money to purchase a shuttle from Gor VI to Earth Colony CXVI where you run into a band of pirates and lead a life of crime.

I know all of this would need immense amounts of man hours and programming; so i'm not trying to trivialize what you guys are doing. I'm just wondering the true depth of what this game is/will be/could become.

I think the game does look like fun on paper, but to tell the truth i'm curios about the true expanse and if that means that you may log on and not have a random encounter for 8 hours a day 7 days a week worth of play. I assume that there will be social areas. Areas where that are very popular, to use SWG as an example, everyone crowded around theed but some other planets like yavin I think you could travel around that place and not see anyone at all.

I can already see it though, there will be huge power house pirate guilds that do nothing but hunt down easy prey to kill. That go around trying to either take or destroy everything you have.

Ah and being persistant isn't a new concept. The way its portrayed you think they invented it.
