Starting up Ryzom

After looking for months for a MMO that could actually hold me (been playing WoW for months now just basically to keep up with friends.  No more fun in it)  I think I've found it in Ryzom.  I wanted something with PvE (the market is being dominated by PvP at the moment) and this game looks to have both.  The economy and story also intrigue me, to the point where I'm downloading the game now and I have a trial account.  What are things that I should know (besides leaving the newbie island early) concerning races and classes?  I've read the Ryzom site, but I want the players opinion.

    Welcome Cinidil, I'll try to answer your questions

    Classes, there are none as this is a skillbased game, but ranged combat is considered more difficult than the rest. Even the most dedicated fighters learn some healing magic, to rez comrades on the field.

    Except looks, lore and starting location there isn't much that separates the races. Different natural resistances from spells mostly, nothing to be concerned with really. The Zorai race has a smaller population than the rest, but I don't know why (area design or their masked features, you decide).

    I was a WoW refugee too, the game is VERY different from WoW. It took some time to figure out the gameplay.
