Leaderborads

ebenholtebenholt Member Posts: 312

I had a peek at the publish plan and started smiling when I read about the PvP leaderbords. Yay, very Starwarsy!

"We want the players to experience what is in the movies. The old system didn't give that" (I don't remeber the exact wording so forgive me)

So this e-peen game SOE are buildning will be all that? I must say SOE sure is doing a great job getting money by giving people the same game experience they can get for free.

Well I'll be the bigger man and say good luck with the fragfest!

Might i ask ,What is wrong with this concept ? I feel largely SWG was always based on a PVP end game . Even crafting was part of the GCW so to speak and entertainers . I understand if you don't like the game , It isn't hard to see its faults . But every concept SOE has in store are not all bad . A lot of them are things that should have been in place at launch due to its PVP end game . Ranking rewards and battlefields are all great things for a PVP based game . Why they are adding them now 3 years in is what boggles me .

If you don't think SWG's intent was a PVP end game . Just take into account who the lead designers behind this game were .

Taking into account the original designers, the game's intent was NEVER combat or pvp. As a matter of fact, lead designer admitted that way too much money was diverted into combat, on the expense of everything else.

You might not agree with that, assuming that every MMO must have both "end-game" and "pvp end-game", but ideal MMO would never have an end-game. End-game means you're done, and should move on. The concept of end-game arose from the original MMO designs, which had absolutely nothing except grind. And once you grinded your x levels, you could start to pvp, because before you could not. Because of levels, no other reason.

And there is nothing wrong with leaderboards. They are Iconic and Starwarsy. Vader and Luke did a frag contest, Luke was constantly behind, eventually he won. Bobba was also avid PKer, when he was killed, he had 289 kills winning streak. So yes, it all fits perfectly.

But for the love of god, why must this become 1st: MMO trying to be BF2 and UT and Quake. 2nd: Like every other freaking game out there, and 3 times poorer in realization.

The reason for this is, the scoreboards will be based on kill counts. On frags. Nothing more, just like planetary score is now. Ask yourself this:
    - In Star Trek Online, P1card has #1 place with 28564 points
    - In Star Gate Worlds, O''n31l has #1 place with 19324 points
    - In Star Wars Galaxies, Bobi Uan has #1 place with 9813 points

Somehow, this doesn't apeal to me. Not surprisingly, it also does not apeal to many MANY people. Why? There can only be one. And people hate to lose. When people lose, they quit, and so on... And SWG doesn't even remotely have enough apeal or side-content of WoW, to make high-end ranking system work.

    I lol'd.

Leaderboards have been something pvpers have wanted for a long time now. It gives edge to competition and provides for healthy PvP. The only problem is that implentation is over 2 years too late. And, granted, SOE will find a way to make it stupid (a la planetary control as another poster commented).

But nonetheless it's a good thing. Don't mock it so readily.

That's the problem. Everything about SWG has always been a good thing. But implementation sucked. Big time.

They will add (just like always before), some form of numerical scoring. Then, people will figure out a way to fight club. A change in the system will be put in (like 24h timer). Some will learn to bypass it, others will get stuck in same way as with pvp rating. If you pvp a bit, you'll hit 24h timer on all opponents, but lose it every time you die. This locks you into some mediocre range of 1300-1400, unless you either run at every sight of danger, or run a gank squad.

And score? What good is it? It's still not a constructive enhancement to pvp. And with the ammount of exploits going on in SWG, both legal and illegal, the uneven playfield of old vs. new players, lag affecting each and every aspect of combat, nothing good can come out from putting people's names on some pedestal.

As for a "good thing(tm)". It's not really Star Warsy or Iconic. Clone troopers were mindless drones, ordered to do what they had to do. No scores there, rankes were pre-programmed. Stormtroopers are the same. Commanders came from different casts, they didn't advance from storm trooper ranks. Jedi were pacifists. With Sith, the ranking is simple, since there are only two, until apprentice kills the master. BH? They were mercenaries. Bad ones died, good ones did rack the score, but could care less, they were in it for the business or revenge.

I only mention this, because SOE has been feeding so much fluff about canon restrictions, and yet they will do anything against that very same preaching at first oportunate moment.

Ok, first I want to say I enjoy PvP so I wasn’t making fun of PvPers.
What I was commenting was how implementation of a leaderboard for PvP rating is going to make the game experience more “Starwarsy”. Again SOE focus on the individual and not the community. Rekrul seems to have understood my post spot on

If you're talking about the new PBS, firstly you can't get on the terms from hunting NPCs, only players :P  Secondly, no same faction players cannot help you against the bounty hunter UNLESS the BH is Special Forces, is of the opposing faction, and your friends are special forces.  TH explains that in such a confusing way...

What is PBS? I always thought seeing this on SWG boards it meant Piece of B...s... Is there a real meaning behind it? And yes, I'm serious.

I don't understand...  So someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Won't this be the return of the FRS, but extended for everyone who PVPs?

You're not far from the truth, except, the FRS actually gave stats while you rose up in rank. However, the stats were so utterly negligable in effect (+50 force to a pool of like 5000+?) that rank was generally useless. That's why a lot of Jedi complained about it.

That and it was exploitable. I remember two "elite" guilds on Bloodfin setting up slaughter farms to exploit rank. They'd line up 11-15 of their guildies to just mindlessly slaughter them and rank up (the exploit was that the system would only record 10 kills and reset on the 11th, so the same 11 people could essentially be killed repeatedly for more FRS rank).

Of course, when they ranked up, they found the FRS was complete crap on its launch. So the FRS was used more or less by the "elite" to show PvP dominance. Nobody cared about it, so keeping a rank above FRS1 meant you PvP'd a fair bit. Its only perceived perk was perma-overt status.

@Rek: yeah, as I mentioned above, the game is full of exploits. Leaderboards won't change that. But the leaderboard was something drafted up years ago, and will only have a beneficial effect on the community. I mean, at this point, there's no stopping the exploits, especially since they've been around for years. Simply stated the bugs are just not going to go away overnight. Existing players just have to cope. Not that I agree, but admittingly, "coping" is what allowed me to last up until NGE.

i dont see anything flat out wrong with it BUT ...

part of what makes a mmorpg so great is the confidence people have in their toons ... everyone wants to think they are the best .. and when they lose in PVP .. they scratch it off to a " bad day" or maybe they didnt have that first cup of cawfee yet ...

with leaderboards .. i bet you 100% it will be the same peeps over and over and over on those boards ... and they will be in the sony forums talking their trash like no tommorrow .. and people will just end up getting sick of those boards and ignore em ... and might even lose immersion into the game ( the inability to get on the boards might dampen their fantasy of power)

.... and whether those people who are ALWAYS on the boards are flat out cheating , using little exploits tricks they learned, or doing it 100% honest and fair wont matter .... because you will have  disgruntled people START to cheat just do either dethrone the guys on the boards for trash talking rights... or just to get ON the board to begin with ...

now this may not end up being the case ... .. just some thoughts i had on the matter
