I'm in the boat where i'm looking to go back to / find a new MMORPG and WoW always pops in my head. I could start fresh on one of the new'ish servers and have fun.
BUT i refuse to reactivate knowing that mind numbing raiding is the only end-game as far as WoW goes. I'm not leveling to 60 again just to have to put my real life on hold so i can walk my character through 8 hour instances every other night with a raiding guild. Sorry, that's not fun in my book. That's indeed, just work.
Is there any hope for someone who doesn't have 8 hours a nigh to dedicate to WoW? I love WoW for the game at it's core, but i hate the way end game just gives and gives to those who have the time (no life) to put into raiding every night. Sorry, but with a job, a girlfriend, and college year round - it come down to priorities, and i'm not ready to put a video game anywhere near the others.
So is there any hope for me in WoW? Note: i don't mind instances at all, 2-3 hours is fine when you have the time. Basically, is there any hope for someone who doesn't join a RAIDING guild in WoW?
*sorry if i offended any hardcore raiders - but come on*

I raid occasionally, however I'm not a huge fan of it myself. I primarily raid as an event with my guild mates.
There's a lot of focus on raiding in WoW, however you can still find plenty to do 'outdoors'. For example, I spend a lot of time dragon hunting and generally wreaking havoc in contested territory. Blizzard has recently opened lvl 57+ instances, like Stratholme, to smaller groups. Although these are still instances, you should be able to run through them in 2-3 hours.
Although the gear isn't as good, the faction awards are decent if you enjoy pvp.

Oh, cruel fate, to be thusly boned. Ask not for whom the bone bones. It bones for thee.

That will happen, however tactics can mitigate that. There are several guilds on my server, like the Jolly Rodgers, that are very anti-raid, but will give anyone a run for their money in PvP.

They're playing the expansion at E3... so it might be hard not to leak that.
Weird.. I didn't post this message in THIS thread. Was supposed to be in the E3 thread. WACKY!!!
But to answer this question.. YES. I play casually. You just can't be all UBARPVP head of the leaderboard, or horde all the UBAR gear. As long as you don't give a crap like me, you'll have a blast.
Contrary to popular belief, you NEVER have to raid and have fun. Most of the fun is GETTING to 60, and if you're casual.. it'll take some time. Enjoy it.
I'm still lvl 47 for frak's sake. I've played some alts too. Enjoy the game. Raid-monkeys are just pissed they whizzed by all the content.

I've been playing WoW since beta and i had stopped for about 6 months. I just recently started back up and in 3 weeks i was able to climb to Rank 5 in PvP, get into a guild that does 40 man instances occasionaly with other guilds. I might do Molten Core for the first time this weekend if i can find the time. So yes, there are casual raiding guilds out there. they ARE RARE.
When i played before, i was in a "real life friend circle" and i hated any instances, especially since our guild only had 5 active level 60's.
Being back i feel great, having fun and having a great balance of PVE and PvP. I was always intimidated by long instance runs, even a 10 man like UBRS. Last night, i went in and completed a full run within 90 minutes. And on top of it, my class shoulders dropped and i got them.
Tonight ill log in at around 8-9pm and i'll play til about 1am. Depending on who's doing what, i may play 10 Battlegrounds in a row, or 5 and then do a Scholo run or something like that.
My conclusion is, i think you can be a casual gamer and play WoW and have a good time, because i am. And i know i'm casual because i dont have EPIC RAID gear.
In real life, i have a full time job/career. I also have a band and have practice 3 days a week. I have a dog, a girlfriend, and her dog, and my own place to worry about and i still find time to play and do semi-meaningful fun things in game.
Hope i could be of some encouragement.

WoW really doesn't put that much attention on the 40 man
raids, especially compared to something like original EQ that devoted an entire
expansion to it. Its problem is it just can't seem to find the right
balance for the battlegrounds between queue waits and raid-level equipment
domination. It also seems to have
completely given up on end-game single group dungeon crawling in favor of the
stupid 20 man dungeons. I don't know what on earth gave them the idea a
20 man would be all that much easier to maintain and run than a 40 man.
They only take an iota less organization, communication and time (given that
the 20 man resets more frequently in a week than the 40 man) to maximize.
The battlegrounds, though fun, are as hardcore as they come. The people
with the most organization, equipment, and time almost always dominate.
I've started several characters to play casually but once you get to the 60
mark there really isn't anything to do unless you're ready for the huge time commitment. They should try to differentiate between “pickup”
BGs that give half the faction / honor rewards and more hardcore guild-level
BGs. Else, it’s so fast to reach 60 but
so terribly time consuming to maximize its potential.
Sure as hell is fun to get to 60 though. I ended up with 7 alts before I
finally gave up for good, every one between 57 and 59, heh. Maybe the expansion will be more promising.
The morning sun has vanquished the horrible night.
IMO there isn't, rerolling is way more fun than trying to get through end-game content with or without a raiding guild...
Hell i had the time to put into raids, and somehow hitting the [/Target MainTank /Cast Rank 4 Healing Touch] macro one billion times or more during 8 hours seems like catastrophically sh!t game design to me. But then again i could be crazy .
So i'd say play Guild wars, if you want something more/VERY casual (i hated it but at least it has that advantage), or reroll in WoW. DO NOT bother with the 3 PVP instances where you'll just get splattered by raid groups with tier 2 epics, its just bad. And even if you did like it it wouldn't justify the subscription, play CS instead you'll have a much larger "instance" variety, without the queues...
Peace.
