Why does every online game have trees?

GmrLeonGmrLeon Member Posts: 118
Ever noticed that? Your in another world walking around and then...bam there's a tree. It spoils the illusion if you ask me. Same goes for water, come up with another substance that looks as cool and shiny as water, but not the same. I swear it's just annoying to get the illusion of the game your playing spoiled by something as simple as a tree.

Stupid trees...

It's because most games take place on Earth like planets.
    Eve doesn't have trees. LMAO

Disclaimer: I am not an Eve fanboi nor do I encourage anyone to play that boring ass game.

Well because no one has enough creativity to come up with a story that doesn't center around an Earth like planet. Actually I take that back, Seed is not based upon an Earth like planet nor does it take place on on. It takes place inside a giant metal tower. Though there are about 3 or 4 trees in the garden area.

Being as most MMOs have a high/fantasy setting, what do you want them to have?

Im all for unique envoiroments, but if the setting doesnt support a foundation for that kind of enviroment, wouldnt it be out of place and thus ruin immersion even more?

No one has enough imagination to come up with something totally alien?

No one has released a game which features nothing but aliens as a race or races that you could pick. Most games have human, or races that look so much like humans if you remove the pointy ears they are no different from.

Almost all the games also have nothing but humanoid races too, why are they always bipedal with arms, legs, and move like humans?

'Cos games are made to make money, to do that - you cater to the mainstream gamer, and most mainstream gamers *like* medieval fantasy ... you know, elves, dragons, knights, et cetera.

Tough to make money with a niche game for a niche crowd amongst gamers (who are in itself a niche crowd in the big scheme of things)

Check out Saga of Ryzom. That's a pretty spaced out setting for a mmorpg

We need an underwater mmo. Plenty of organic things in there and no trees

    An underewater mmo!

that's actually an awesome idea. Without humans. For example you can become a whale or a dolphin, in some kind of future highly-developed underwater societies.

And you'd have the octopus faction, highly intelligent 'n stuff.

    Awesome idea.

Actually, one reason is because there's a well-known algorithm for the simple creation of fairly complex and realistic tree branching. So instead of having to put down a big, heavy object description, they can run the algorithm, and hey! a pretty damn good-looking tree for a fraction of the memory cost that something else would've been.

    Thanks MadAce.

That idea of Octopus and dolphins is awesome. There could be the human race too and they cruise around in submarines in the first person inside the cockpit. Then you could get out in a diving suit or whatever its called with a sweet gun. Ideas are endless.

Of course humans could fight eachother (not just the animals) and so we would have submarine battles! Reminds me of that great movie U-571, of course this game could be more futuristic too. Then you build underwater cities and bases.

Then their could be people who specialize in harvesting the underwater plants and resources.

I think it would be great to have the depth of this game similar to EVE, but the combat would be more interactive so people could aim with weapons (lock on if its a missle), no boring harvesting/mining and no clicking a skill and waiting.
