The truth behind the soe/sigil union

** VANGUARD is looking like a repeat of the SONY/everquest 1 fiasco ...**

I know this post is long ... but it SUMS up ( what i believe ) to be the TRUE dynamic of whats going on....

The developers maintain sony will just " publish" the game ... but i find that hard to believe ... I think its spin to quell peoples fear .. Sony doesnt get involved unless it has leverage to pressure release and expansions .. after all its in the business of making money .. not helping out a small poor company who needs shelf space .... in fact heres a direct quote from one of the developers ....

"We will certainly consult with them ( SOE) ... but Sigil funds all development, and we'll only spend our own resources to develop/deploy things that we think are worth it. Really - we have more control than we did in the previous MS deal."

(This was announced by taranis, last night, a figurehead with sigil)

Consulting with SOE .. means getting "pressure" from SOE....

and when people voiced concerns over sigil being with Microsoft .. sigil maintained they had full control of the game then ... Now,  they are whistling a different tune saying they didnt have full control and now with SOE they have full control... this was but one conflicting/misleading array of statements

not only that, but they repeatedly stated in response to people concerns about Microsoft rushing out vanguard,  that "Microsoft is fully aware of the " vision" we ( developers) have for vanguard, and respect the fact it will take time to construct the game to fufull this vision, and wont pressure the release" ....

but of course brad & company were wrong ... Microsoft did pressure the release, were adamant about getting the V:SOH game on xbox360, and wanted some other technical aspects included in the deal, one being adherence to vista..   ... sigil needed more time and money, as well and refused microsoft's ultimatums regarding the technical aspects ... and Microsoft bailed and sold the contract to SOE

( I have heard in posts and discussions, Microsoft retained the right to sell the publishing contract as part of the agreement with sigil, Due to the uncertain nature of publishing and marketing the new O.S. vista and xbox360 simultaneously as well as the possibility of sigil not conforming to its wishes in porting the game to xbox360, making it vista only, and including some other technical aspects to the game ..... In other words,   if promoting vanguard became too involved and stressfull in the time during M$'s promoting xbox360 and vista, and they werent happy with sigil's inability to conform with their wishes,  They had the full option to drop the contract, to concentrate on their priorities )  ....

and this of course is EXACTLY what happened ... vanguard was held back too long, much longer than M$ has expected, and the projected release timeframe of vanguard started to OVERLAP, the projected arrival/promotions of xbox360 and Vista, and sigil refused to let the game be ported to 360 and run exclusively on vista . ....so M$ took its option to sell off the publishing contract

now heres where sigil screwed up!..

they NEVER thought M$ would sell the contract to SOE, which is a direct competitor to M$ not only in the CONSOLE market .. but the MMORPG and  game PUBLISHING market ...but surprisingly they did ... and i believe M$ agreed to sell the rights to sony, mainly, because they truely believe sony is in a bottomless hole at this time with no chance of climbing out soon...

The buggy, unstable and lackluster state of the beta at this point will just fuel anti-SOE rhetoric.. so why not sabotage vanguard ( a possible competitor to any future mmorpg microsoft backs)

Microsoftt also is in negotiations with regards to the marvel comic MMO license and possibly another MMO which sigil is interested in co-developing with M$... now maybe M$ does not feel secure about the situation with sigil  ( constant delays and the inability to agree on launch dates, and the current state of the V:SOH beta ) having a hand in the marvel MMO or wants greater control over the licenses ..

they also may have some other releases planned in 2007/08 themselves within the mmorpg market

In the very least soe will NOT gain any credit for vanguards success should it be a success, and will only be acredited with any NEGATIVE aspects to vanguard

so the sigil teams " everything is ok" mumbo jumbo ...sounds mostly like bull$hit spin to me to stop people from cancelling pre orders ...

staying away from vanguard if your looking for a game for the long haul, might be a good idea ....

sigil is trying to nuture a contract with MARVEL for a comic mmorpg .. as well as one other high profile license .. and i suspect they dont have enough developing resources ( they are after all a small company) to keep up with it all .. so they probably now figure they can pass along vanguard sot SOE if it gets to be too much ( sacrificing vanguard for the bigger paying licenses ) ... after a year or two i suspect they will sell it off to SOE, very similar to the way SOE ursurped everquest

another QUOTE from a SIGIL developer

"Now I can't promise that it'll never change (ie - if SOE decides to buy Sigil at some point down the road, etc) ... but the structure of the deal, as it is today ... ensures Sigil's autonomy. Both corporately - and financially."

"As it was related to me, SOE needed a title for next year, and with Sigil making the move from Microsoft Games, it was the perfect match. The monetary infusion from SOE also means that Sigil will have more development time to insure the quality of the game. It also means an extended beta time with one or two large final stages of beta playing host to 30-40 thousand gamers."

these are quotes from sigil developers yet again ... " monetary infusion" sure doesnt sound like the "non-involvement" spin sigil and SOE have been spewing to concerned fans

sorry these type of statements dont make me feel secure as to SOE's "non-involvement"... we are gamers ... that doesnt mean we are stupid

I love it!!!First Vanguard tries to get all anti $OE player, and now they wonder why peole are upset. The real truth behind this deal is MONEY!!!!Both $igil and $OE want to get more money out of this union. And it looks like they don`t care about the $OE refugees they attracted to this game. And some more points about who has the power in the $OE&$igil agreement:

As co-publisher of Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, Sigil assumes greater control of marketing and PR, while maintaining responsibility for game development, community relations, media relations, customer support, and quality assurance

Under the terms of the agreement, SOE will provide distribution, marketing, hosting and back-end support -- including billing and technical support -- for the game.

You get it, $OE is in control, they have the money, the server and the will do the marketing, distribution and billing!!!
Sigil got the short part beeing responsible for development (if Vanguard busted it will be Sigils fault) also, it is not sure who will develope Vanguard, only that $igil is responsible.
Quality assurance and community relations are also not the nice part of the deal.
Not a deal I want to sign if I am Sigil, but will sign if I am $igil.

If something is uncertain, I will not invest time and money into it, whatever how nice or cool it looks. And with $OE things are not safe, so I stay away.

Sigil is targeting EQ2 players,  what better audience to pick honestly???   EQ2 players love PvE/ raiding games.  Think about it.   And when those players see Vanguard they will jump on it like leeches to a poor bum who fell in a swamp.

Thats a good point ... and i am sure since V:SOH is being offered on the " station pass" that many many people who have the access pass will play V:SOH ...

but how will this benefit brad and company, since most of their profits from what i hear will come from the BOX sales?

and people say the VOCAL minority are on the forums complaining .. that is absolutely NOT true... most people are hearing about SOE and getting advice NEVER to buy an SOE product from friends, and STORE clerks at stores like game stop, and EB ... bascially from word of mouth .. NOT forums ...

just the SOE label on the box will lose 3 out of 5 people who go to the store to look for a game to buy ...

heck i remember in august 2004 when i went to buy SWG, the store clerk had warned me not to purchase it .. about SOE not giving a crap about its MMO community ... and the SWG debacle hadnt even happened yet ( maybe dissention from EQ?) who knows... but its a very definite reality ...

Way to do your research. Your SIGIL DEVELOPER quote about the infusion of SoE cash was actually Woody Hearn (gucomics.com) who for the record likes this move.

How can people be expected to believe you when you will flat out lie to prove your point?

There is no "truth" to this, it's your wild conspiracy theories and wrong information bundled up in a frothing rant.

Also I appreciated your bolding of the comment by Taranis that they will "consult" with SoE while alltogether missing the point that that is the extent of SoE's power in this move.

His other quote is basically saying "I can't tell the future". And last time I checked neither can you. Also that he is saying Sigil now has MORE autonomy than they did with Microsoft which you conveniently didn't bold.

Continue to spin everything though, it's great to read and makes you look super duper clever fighting the man! Your post is so full of crap it's amazing people can actually believe that.

So when Sigil purchased the publishing rights from Microsoft, that was really Microsoft selling them to SoE?

    Wish Darkfall would release.

If you're quoting Woody, use the comic.

How things eerily come true like that.  They should just put Vanguard down ....like  asick horse or something

People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.

As long as people like you don't realize it, it needs to be repeated over and over and over...
