Language Barrier

eldareldar Member Posts: 108
I was worried when I first got into this game that there would be a huge language barrier. I mean you see it honetly in final fantasy where there are areas and servers where the japanese rule. Do you think we are going to see this in Ryzom?image

Even if it is a french game and it is very popular in france the official game language is English from the start. so it should not be any problems experience wise. Nevrax is very keen not to promote this as a "french MMORPG"

however if only people from france is playing, of course the language is frensh

Well the english is not what I am worried about it is the french. Usually other countries do study more languages than us I was just worried about how that was going to effect the people who play.

I guess its not but I am still waiting to see. thanks for the info.

Don't worry to much about it, most french people I met in their chatroom (#ryzom on Epiknet) knew some kind of english image also there is a groving community of non french-speaking people in the beta

If the game remains entirely in English, many people, especially young people, will be excluded. I've experienced the problem on another game recently. English server with European people playing.

There are actually three solutions to the problem, I think:
    - Non English-speaking players should learn quickly ^^
    - Non English-speaking players should play only with non English-speaking players :-/
    - There should be as many servers as languages

Of course English is THE universal language, but to "forbid" the game for this one and only reason is not fair.

Don't worry about it. It sure will be entirely english.
Sure there will be much more frnch people on the servers then on most other mmorpgs but that's no problem. They will create french clans. I'm from austria and speak german. I refuse to play on any german servers or joining any german guilds though.

On thing i enjoy most in a mmorpg is talk to people of all over the world.

If you did understand what i just wrote you will have no problem with Ryzom since i am just on of those average nonenglish nativespeakers of europe. :::^D::

    Don't worry about that :

From my experience in the european version of Dark age of camelot, the language is a bit of a problem. A lot of europeans speak english (like me, more or less :::^D::) but most prefere to speak in their native language if they can. And as soon as you have a group from the same country they will speak their own language - even if it is just between themselfs or in their own group, it makes it a bit difficult for others to join such a party and strange when you walk by and someone is chatting in a language you don't understand. You usually get away with "please speak english" in mixed groups but still... you can't get past the feeling of being outcasted at certain points of the game.

Having different language servers is one option but it's not my ideal solution. Look at DAOC Europe servers. There are only 2 (plus one PVP) english servers and a dozen german/french servers. Which means there is a population of 3500 english speaking players compaerd to 10000 german speaking players, for instance. Again, .. makes you feel like an outcast (and in case of DAOC you can't play all 3 realms at the same time).

On the other hand, playing on US servers isn't a great option either, becaouse of timezones.

I guess the best solution would be to group european english speaking servers and US servers together, and have one USA team and one european team that would have their own events at different hours. Plus it would make it even more fun to play since there would be something going on whenever you log on.... ::?^):: . Well, just my way of thinking anyway.

So if I understand correctly Saga of Ryzom is going to have a DAOC like solution?

I hope they dont create localized servers but i think localized clients are a good idea as long as the game language stays the same for all players. I'am from germany but prefere to play on servers with english language because i dont want to play the whole time only with people from germany, austria or switzerland.

What do u think about Brazilian folks playing this game? Do u think that this game should be open for them to play? Of course sooner or later they will, but what r ur opinion about it?

This is why a universal language is so important for our day in age. A type of Basic we can all understand and learn easily.

And there is a language like that!

Check out Esperanto, its a scientifically created language that is incredibly easy to learn and would open up a lot of communications between different people.

Try this site if your interested in it:

Alien #1 "We speak every human language with all known dialects..."

      Alien #2 "Except for Esperanto."

Alien #1 "Yes, that was going nowhere fast.. Ha, Esperanto"

    (much laughing ensues)
