I don't know how the game was before, but i played a 14 day trial of "City of Villians" a few weeks ago. I found the graphics and animation fantastic, sound was very good, but the game mechanics lacked a little.
The face of the game is very good, creating characters with literally thousands of combinations of powers and looks possible and the initial guidance is good, but once i got into the game proper it became very repetetive very quickly.
Now please understand that this opinion is based on playing a couple of characters up to L11, so there is probably a hell of lot i may be missing further into the game, but i decided not to subscribe after the trial as i doubted i would have the strength to go too much further. I just found that the levelling grind was just that, a major grind and the mission system became all too repetetive. Although they have tried to add a little in the way of storylines to the missions, it could not take away that "i've been here before" feeling, even at these lower levels.
Also, the selection of powers and character can seriously effect how you progress through the game i found. Where as my first character could hit slightly above his weight meaning that missions were passable at the relevant level, my second character had to grind to higher levels to complete the same missions, which was very frustrating.
In conclusion, i loved the overall look and feel of the game, controls are simple enough to master with a little practice, but the mission system could do with a major overhaul i think.
It must be Thursday, i never could get the hang of Thursdays.
Well I have been testing out I7 on the test server and so far so good, been testing the Elec/Elec brute and so far has been working out very well. DOnt like that they took out some of the old and I guess what they consider not being used costume pieaces but they also added some to take their place, but still not to fond of the absence of certine costume parts.
I know there are bugs, there are always bugs but as of yet have not come across them but I'm sure I will once I get above lvl 15 or so.
Well, my advice would be to wait until the expansion is released next year if you are looking for CoH/V to offer something truly different. Beyond Mayhem Mission(CoV only) there is not much to experience that you haven't already. As with the release with CoV, many new powers are just re-paints of old ones and most disappointing IMO is the re-hashing of the EXACT same sound effects. My Stalker's defense powers has the same sounds as a Kinetics defender. Acid Mortar makes the same sound as electricity, Huh?
Anyways, Jason is correct in that the gameplay is not full of variety. A lot of people play up to 20, maybe 30 the start another character. And on one point, some may disagree, but I do not find the stories that engaging. Same mission layout, mobs in same place, grinding defeat all missions and just different pictures. Not to meniton I've already read them all once and even then they didn't have an impact because you don't really SEE you are making a difference like in a single player game. Very little variety like the Hess TF where traps are sprung and you defeat the robots and the doors open(at least I think that was the Hess TF).
Also, let me say here because it is less likely to get majorly flamed but any variety the gamers have found to play the game differently is basically labelled an exploit. We have gotten to the point of making the most minor of changes for the sake of balance(at this point I question a lot of the so-called balancing, we are not talking 110% Smoke Grenade debuff anymore, not anywhere close) and have given nothing in return. No more slotting for perma-abilities, suppression of travel powers, defense reduction, etc. Just barely have they given something in return with the Mayhem Missions. I'm for balancing but at the same time if it reduces the variety/flavor I enjoyed then be prepared to put something back.
Statesman mentioned months ago about making missions that were not combat-oriented to complete. Still waiting.
I only keep playing because I LOVE super-heroes and its the only game in town. If you are looking for a radical change in gameplay from just 2 months ago then I think you will be disappointed I7. It was officially announced that they plan an expansion pack for 2007 so my advice, if you don't like heroes as much as I do, is to find something to hold you over til then.

What expansion is coming?
I'm not sure I7 will even keep me there.
If my account were not paid for the year I would quit already.
I7 is supposedly coming out this week.
