The posts seem to confirm that they, theDDO fanbase, are not the "mature" group they claim to be.
I knew this from the DDO forums. Anybody that posted anything negative about the game while in BETA or before was told to shut up and quit coming to the forum if they didn't like it. And the fanbois were almost always first to get personal. Agree completely. Bottom line: Anyone who claims their community is "more mature" or "smarter" or "better" than other games is 1) biassed and 2) immature themselves. Because a mature person would never stoop to insulting another community. Because they would know that all communities, once all is said and done, in an online game are pretty much the same. After all, the community is fairly small and very migratory.
Well I remember when I used to play WOW, I could not go 5 mins without some idiot making his presence known. Now i've been playing DDO since release and I have not encountered a single idiot yet, and I play a few hours every night, maybe I've just gotten lucky, but then again I have never seen any crap in general chat.
Maybe the forums have some idiots, maybe those idiots are WOW fanbois trying to give this game a bad rep, or maybe they are plants from other games trying to give this game a bad rep (if you think that doesnt happen then I feel sorry for you). Certainly there are some idiots that play DDO, but in my experience it's almost nill.
Heck, last week I was playing my ranger, he was duel weilding and using a masterwork bow. I joined a group of stranger to do some quests and 1 of the guys asked me what weapons I was using, cuz he saw my bow and my weapons. He then gave me a nice +1 Frost sickle (which allowed me to dual wield with my longsword without a penalty) and also gave me a +1 Frost Composite Longbow, he gave them to a complete stranger out of the goodness of his heart. This was not the first time this sort of thing has happened to me in DDO, but in WOW you have to always watch your back for the idiot trying to scam you or ninja loot or whatever.
It also may have something to do with the fact that WoW has, what, 50 or more times the subscricers than DDO... The more people you have the better the chance to meet ab idiot. Or are you saying that the DDO community is better and more mature?

And could you explain how you ninja loot in WoW?
1. All small communities ALWAYS seem mature because you are less like to meet an idiot. Moreover the players play maturely so they won't cause other players discomfort and to the point they'll leave. The last thing players in such communities want to do is cause the community to get smaller.
2. It's possibleto Ninja Loot and Sneak Thief a kill if when doing outside quest. If you're keeping the guardian of treasure chest busy when doing outside quests, a person can come up and take treasure while your fighting. To Sneak Thief a kill, right before you fight your opponent when doing an outside quest, all a player has to do is shoot your opponent before you do, and they get your kill while you do all the hard work.
In both situations, if there is a player nearby, I don't advance towards the enemy. I let them fight. If they choose not to fight, I don't fight either. I'll just sit there and wait for them to leave.
ok in my journeys on d&do i have played with a much more mature player base because there is no room for griefing, ok then where will people gripe and grief.... the forumns, there is where they vent as the game play does not allow this as it is grp orientated, forumns have always been filled with comments of the slighted and braggings of the mighted, its just the nature of people, but when it comes down to it the gameplay in-game is more mature because you dont have someone standing over you while yer dead telling you that you are a weak person and your death was imminent and that they rule , lol, kk, but forumns will have that, always have since i been playing mmo's which go back to the first 3 months earth and beyond came out. I love d&d online, i hope it grows in the right direction as im tired of games getting casncelled or becoming another game entirely when you log in lol,... kk everyone take care and have a good day GODSPEED FRIEND

First off, I am glad you like the game, and I too hope to grows.
Your comments about griefing... Depends on how you define griefing... To me griefing is defined as any player doing to disrupt my enjoyment of the game I am playing... This includes someone in a group runing ahead and just being stupid. So there is room for griefers in DDO. As I said I hope DDO survives... I have my doubts.

I would be surprised is the STO community is much different from the DDO community. Now, I haven't looked at their boards so I can't say from experience, but you have the same time of personality ... obsessive of what they consider to be thier niche, and narrow-minded as to what can and cannot be done in their own little corner of the world.
That's why I'm always leery of any game based on a pre-set environment. There are expectations to be met, and every fan sees it a little bit differently than the others do. No matter what a dev does, it's sure to crank off someone.
In other words, it's a developer's Kobayashi Maru ...
People on the forums can be quiet relentless sometimes. Personally I have experienced it first hand when I tried to "suggest" a resolution to a person's problem. Perhaps the "fanbois" see the problems with the game themselves but just don't want to admit it because they are in love with the original D&D. I would think that respect is the first priority and then a humanly discussion, not an argument.
It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue."
It sucks, but too many people on forums act like a-holes because they are annonymous. Looks like the poster just wanted to tell everyone why he's cancelling to bring about positive changes.
But we all expect at least some of this type of response, the 12 year olds all come out of the woodwork.
A friend of mine has a cute quote in his signature:
Community (n.) - Irrationals unified by hope of the impossible
As far as DDO goes, I think we can all extrapolate from here.
However, rationally speaking, it's really hard to talk about the quality of a community. There isn't any real clear objective standard for "good" in this arena. Sure you can say things like "they are plagued by fanboi" or "a lot of immature people post", but none of this really gets you anything useful. The larger the community, the more varied the responses to various stimuli which breeds inconsistency in response.
In any large game you will have fanboi and anti-fanboi, troll and anti-troll, immature whiny brat and mature cogent oldtimer, etc. These go with the territory. Attempting to qualify an entire community by the actions of any smaller vocal subset of that community is probably going to wind up being incorrect.

I have to disagree here most people who quit a game dont go through all the trouble to go post on said games forums ..actually only about 10% or so of a games total players even bother to register & post on a games forums..
I play do right now and have gotten a char to lv 10 ..and another to 7.4 but I am only playing on Sundays as there just not enough players about to consciently group ..I am in a dedicated guild who has lost 80 % of its players because ddo just dont have the content to keep them around ..not because they didnt like the game just that is is a shell of what they expected ..

Nor do I ever remember having to physically aim a bow at a target so that my character could hit his target.
Yes, most of the gameplay is similar but the combat system is NOT true to the AD&D ruleset because the AD&D ruleset is NOT FPS. Not even remotely. The sorta-kinda-FPS crap in DDO is lame and needs to go. Especially the "right click on the mouse to attack" BS. (Thankfully they DO give us an attack key to use which eliminates a big chunk of that).
But I shouldn't have to remember to raise my shield to block, nor should I have to right click to attack. Ever. The CHARACTER should take care of that. My job should be to pick targets and select combat tactics. The actually running around like a madman during combat should be handled by the game.

I can't even remotely agree with you on this. The combat in this game actually has to be the funnest part about this game(other than seeing a rogue walk through a trap he didn't see). So you really want a game where you select the target to attack, then you walk away from your computer to go grab a snack, and come back to see if you won? The fact that the mobs don't stand still and just take the abuse is awesome. The mobs tend to run past the first couple of peole and start fighting people n the middle of the party, which is also very refreshing. No more of the "Ok tank you pull all the mobs to you, I'll heal you and everyone else attacks the mobs while the mobs just beat on the main tank until they are dead." Also your shield still blocks if you have one equipped, it just works better if you physically use the shield instead of letting the stats do the work. Maybe the combat isn't like AD&D, but its definatly the best combat engine around and has the most exciting fights. I for one am very happy that the game doesn't hold my hand and make sure that I do all the correct combat moves that would be very boring.

Didn't say that. I think that it's great that the AI thinks. But players should have options like /stick (in DAOC) to automatically stay with their targets. I do not like having to scamper around ALL the time. In some cases you won't wanna chase them, in some you will... We should have the option of choosing and the ABILITY to automate it if we want to. And if you think you can just /attack and walk away from the keyboard in other MMORPG's you've been playing WoW too long. In DAOC that will absolutely positively get you dead. In most other MMORPG's I've enjoyed as well.
Combat isn't just about keeping a cursor over a target. Sorry you seem to think that. I don't think they should take out ALL the aspects that are in the game. I criticized the shield thing just as an emphasis... I actually like that you can do it. But my point is this:
There should be ways to automate parts of it. My ability to play an MMO should not be forcibly tied to my eye-hand coordination. Can I do it? Sure, I solo all the time in 'group' missions. Not supposed to but there are ways to do it safely. But do I think the combat system would be vastly improved by a /stick type command? Heck yes.

I will have to agree though that the DDO forums, ( for some reason the codemasters one are quite a bit better ), has one of the most hateful and unfriendly forums on the market, only really rivaled by EVE.
However this do not say much about the game, or even about the people playing it, it do say a lot about the people on forums though.
This is of course my own very personal opinion, but I tend to spend a lot of time in the forums of whatever game I am currently playing, so while obviously not the truth I would like to think it is a reasonably educated estimate.
That said I will also point out that I do not like DDO all that much, I think it does the franchise unjustice and it is one of the more bland games out there, all things considered.
But, I would not mind at all if Turbine could turn this around and make a playable game out of it in the end.
Even so though, that migth just be to late, a game that is so very very group oriented can not take a loss of players for all that long before you get a catch 22 effect.
Meaning that even if the game is good, if you loose enough players even the ones who like it will have to leave because there just is not enough people for them to play with.
History tells us that recovering from a bad launch, and lets face it, it is not great, is an extremely hard endevour, on the other hand I would not mind if this was the one time history was proven wrong.
We need a DnD MMO, we have needed it for a long time and I guess the reason so many are so very angry is the fact that they feel cheated on a moment they had been looking forward to for a long time, not because there is anything inherently flawed with it, it just do not deliver what most expected.

People hating clerics for not playing the way they're "supposed to" (whatever that means) People hating rangers for .. just being rangers, I guess People hating Warforged characters to the point of kicking them out of groups just for being Warforged People hating players who either cannot or choose not to use the VOIP client People hating players who use the VOIP client because they can hear background noise in the other player's homes People hating people for posting legitimate questions regarding content and replayability People hating people for posting "vent" posts about their bad GM experiences People hating people for saying goodbye as they leave People hating people who post on the official forums just because they post there And the list goes on and on. One well-known Turbine apologist posted on the official forums asking if he was a "Fanboy or Troll", not even realizing that has was actually both. When it was pointed out to him that a fanboy is, in fact, a specific type of troll, he quit replying and the post sunk. Every gaming community has players like this. The phenomenon is not new. However, there seems to be a disproportionately high percentage of this type of player in the DDO community. Given the already small community DDO has, the high percentage of this type of player in the game compared to other games makes it more noticible and therefore more of a problem. Yes, if you put a "This game SuXx0rz" post out there you will get flamed, and rightly so. But the playerbase of this game seethes with hate and elitism both on the forums and in-game.
I find the smaller the community, the higher the chance of meeting a wanker.
Actually, the chance is the same, in all communities, in all games, but in a more populace enviroment you don't find yourself spending anytime talking to them or grouping with them because there is always a better option. Someone you do like to converse with standing next to them.
After 10 years of mmog's and their forums I find that DDO's forums are tame compared to most with very few posts being made by those busy playing it. In fact there is a growing contingent of near professional trolls who move from game to game just to cause a ruckus and spew negativity. ( as the OP's name suggests). DDO itself is not following the usual clonish path of previous games and is mostly a unique experience. It won't appeal to masses because it follows a different path (like EVE) but over time it will slowly grow and develop a following by folks who really love the game. Call them whatever cliche you can think of but I think that's a good thing. And if you care about something you will defend it if it is worth defending. Try it for yourself and see.

In America I have bad teeth. If I lived in England my teeth would be perfect.
Really now?

Jeddak former beta tester and current subscriber since day 1 who still loves the game. Something that I haven't been able to say for years of lackluster game debuts. (wow and eq2 the last two I dumped after the beta in one and 1 month in the other).
