I don't think most people hate the game, most people just feel its guildwars rehashed (-pvp focus)... and guildwars "feels" bigger. Shrug. It's a fun game in its own right it's just not worth a montly fee.

    What I'd love to see:

    "Real Dungeons and Dragons Online"
o The Realms, Ravenloft, hell, even the current world and not limited everyone to a little tiny itsy bitsy corner of it.
o Areas that AREN'T instanced, compete with other players for something (not necessarily pvp)
o Full 20 Levels to START
o The things turbine is normally GREAT at... monthly content, affected by the players as a whole (AC anyone?)
o Graphics that aren't so drab and lackluster, the models are a big disappointment
o Real character customization (Galaxies, COH/V, hell-- EQ2 even)
    o Massive Ammounts of Clothing!
o Player owned structures (boats, houses, caravans, castles)
o Open ended activities... like herbalism in oblivion! Crafting would be nice.
    o "real" spell research/item creation
o Structured guilds you could raise your standing in (temples, magi schools/universitities/organisations, fighters guilds, thieves guilds, assassins guilds!)
o Open ended choices about what your character can do and be (LE? NE? CE?) Let people play as evil chars (again, doesn't have to have pvp, just a playstyle choice.)
    o Piles of content!
o A 'real' dungeon, like Undermountain
o Alternate worlds/realms as expansions... spelljammer, planescape, portals to other dimensions
    o Feeling Heroic!

The francihse had *so* much potential and they really kinda screwed the pooch on it. I'm hoping it lasts at least two or three expansions and by then maybe they'll have had the opportunity to add the content needed to make this work. Gonna take alot to work off the bad name they've gained with alot of gamers though and that's really unfortunete.

But I'll simply say that i'm under the exact opposite opinion.

It wasn't that people weren't ready.  It was that DDO wasn't ready to be released to the people... a good 10 levels and a good 400 quest too early.

My guess is that you will not see Turbine do anything drastic till LotR-O is released.  Then it depends on if DDO is making enough, if any, money.  If not, look for AC2 all over again.

Yes, you are right. I wasn't ready for DDO....that is, I wasn't ready for how 100% awful the gameplay, design, content (or lack there of ) is.

DDO is the worst MMO I've ever played in my decade of playing them. Grats Turbine.

Most likely you're correct, it's really unfortunete alot of the design decisions they took though. It's not so much a matter of what they've done its what they didn't do that they should have done... upfront. Hopefully they can correct alot of those mistakes with expansions... but I honestly don't expect to see that, most of turbines expansions focus on adding more content (which is needed) but I don't think thats going to fix the underlying game issues. :o/ But I can hope! :)

    to the OP.

i like DDO, so maybe i m ready for it.

However the praise doesn t come with some gripes.

i really like the concept of DDO, implementing true dungeons crawls with traps and even some puzzles.
The community, at least on my server, seemed to be much more mature than in other games i played .. or maybe they just behaved better because of voicechat? anyways, DDO has given me some of the best Dungeon Crawling Experiences ever.

The problem is, there aren t all that many of them. and you re basically expected to repeat quests to keep leveling up.

On top of that they are making some really unpopular design decisions now, like the "dragon loot" mechanic that looks like it came out of the Everquest Textbook on how to make players fight each other. Or the rebalancing of countless highend quests for the hardcore "gearfarmer" crowd, removing rest shrines and adding oozes wich makes them very frustrating to try with a genuine firsttimer group, especially for casters who are now expected to "recall out" halfway trough to recharge mana in a tavern..... losing time and xp in the process.

On the upside they hired some promising talent (the Eberron creator i think) to write new quest storylines for them, so maybe there s hope too.

i haven t made up my mind about DDO yet i have to admit. While i can see a lot of promise and potential it utlimately depends on how Turbine will handle themselves in the next couple of weeks.
if they make it an AC1 or and AC2 ;) lol~

Probably... to be honest I'm not expecting much out of LOTR:O.... hopefully they'll surprise me because I truely love JRR Tolkien's work and would love to play an MMO based on it.  I've played MUME (Multi Users in Middle Earth) for years.  One of the best MUX's I've ever played...  Somehow I don't think Turbine is going to live up to my expectations (again) though.

There is nothing massive about 6 people groups.  This game should have been marketed like any other game with online capabilities.   Baldur's, NWN, Diablo, etc.  This game would do fine if people could just buy it and play it with there friends when they felt like it.  Monthly fees make that impossible.  They want us to believe it is a MMO and think people would just blindly believe it and happily pay.  Bad, bad business plan I would say.

Guild Wars does just fine without a monthly fee.  I guess Turbine just got too greedy and thought they could get a piece of the huge Blizzard share.  Nope.

I agree...  I have high hope for LotR-O...  But with Turbine...  Well, I have serious doubts.

I had very high hopes for it when it was "MEO (Middle Earth Online)" and was being produced by a different company.  Turbine, however, has proven pretty inept at making MMORPG's since Asherons Call so I don't have a lot of faith in their abilities.
