So the Devs at UX:O have a new diary on Gamespy.com about the ability system. Apparently, UX:O is not using the antiquated skill tree system, but is using a tier system for learning skills, and hybrid skills...totally about 2,400. Much more that any RPG out there.
This is part of what Hanna says in the diary:
The second aspect of our abilities that makes them stand out over those of other MMOGs is that they are all unique. Most games have skills that essentially boil down to fireball 1, fireball 2, and fireball 3, and count these as three unique skills. In reality, they are the same skill, albeit with different damage numbers. I've always found it disappointing to read about a game that claims 500 skills, only to find out they really only have 50 skills that are all mimicked 10 times. In UXO, all 216 character abilities and all 24 virtue abilities are unique. So if one ability does fire damage with a small chance to stun a target, then no other ability works just like that. On top of that, each ability has its own ability level, which can be increased from 1 to 10 to enhance the effectiveness of that particular ability. In effect, that creates a total of 2,400 permutations of abilities, giving you almost limitless options.
The virtues in UXo give context to the abilities, IMHO, and I am glad there are so many, with out the threat of getting pigeon holed....
