The first is from the old Tabula Rasa before 2005.
The second is the new and improved TR after 2005.

I like the FPS-like interface of the Tabula Rasa but I'm confused by its direction.
Garriot was turned off to PvP by UO so Tabula Rasa has been designed as a PvE game.
Garriot also gave up on players and resorted to instancing everything.
It's all so very strange.
yes.. but he's since gotten rid of a "pure instance" game model in favor of something much more interesting :-D
Looks to be a pretty cool game...But looks can be deceiving. We will have to see what these guys can bring to the table thats new. Everything else out there now just bores me to death....
I like MMOs for a reason
Looks can be decieving. SWG looks great but plays like c*rp (at least after NGE). Wil be very interesting to see this game in action. The movies i've seen so far seems pretty cool but hard to tell without playing it by yourself.
There should be a mix between instances and free-for-all areas. But it all comes down to the player-to-player interaction, not if the adventure areas are instanced or not to have the MMORPG feel.
I only have MMO experience of SWG and EQ2. EQ2 has close to none interaction between players, compared to the old SWG which had plenty (before the devs felt they needed to strip down the game).
Some might not like this but I think there should be needs to see a doctor once in a while to check up wounds or something. Also haveing something like the Battle Fatigue that SWG had so one has to visit an entertainers. Fuels interaction between players.
We'll see where TR ends up... feels a bit like it won't be that much. You'll only have small outposts but it could instead be pretty crowded there.
from the discriptions....
basically... you will have both instanced and live missions that will effect the battle field, and the progression therin.
on top of that... there will be some sort of story progression... I imagine those take place entirely in instance.
so... lets say that the game itself is probably arround half instanced, half world....
with actual missions being more like 2:1 or 3:1
I like MMOs for a reason
Well, in the E3 movie i saw there was this big battlefield map that wasn't instanced. Aliens and NPCs were battling it out all the time and players would join the fray. there were Outpost points that spawned aliens or humans, depending on who controlled them. You could conquer the outpost and make them of your side, of course.
The outposts were like a ring surrounding the central alien base of that sector that was protected by a number of deadly Tesla-Coil style (remember C&C? same thing) turrets. To pass trough, players had to take instanced mission for EACH turret to reach the generator and blow it up, so deacttivating a turrent in the world map. Hopefully many players would take those missions at roughly the same time so many turrets would be deactivate at the same time. Once the turrets were dealt with you could reach the inner circle and get to the alien massive headquarters, with foot troops, walkers and fighters coming out from everywhere.
It was a pretty cool package that told us the instancing Garriot is using is very different from what has been done so far. The instances basically serves as "missions" that you can undertake, but not for the mission's sake only! they actually have a purpose and affect a certain element of the "real" game world. They are means to an end so to say.
In the same movie it was also said how weapons will all have tactical considerations to them, so that you can't just carry around the baddest gun you can find, you need some weapons to be effective. For example the machine gun is very effective against foot troopers but a waste against walkers. Rocket launchers, instead are very effective against walkers but not against foot troopers and so on.
Yes, Lord British is back and he is wanting to change electronic entertainment... AGAIN!
