Looking for a very specific kind of MMO

DenikinDenikin Member Posts: 39

So, I realise that this isn't going to exist, or at least not the way I want it to, but I'm asking you guys for your imput, to see what you can think of being close to it.

Essentially, I'm looking for something PVP oriented, that has resources in the game for various groups to fight over, and which can be used by people for crafting.

Now, lots of games have this to a certain degree, but more specifically, I'm looking for a game that really focuses on that, where all the objects in the game (or at least most, or at at higher level) have to be player created.

Also, where resources don't just spawn randomly all over the map for people to find. I want something where you fight over territory, which lets you control and harvest those resources.

Essentially, I'm looking for a RTS, but which you play as just a single character.

Now, on top of that, what would be nice would be being able to build a variety of buildings, and have player controlled towns.

And... maybe a skill-based system as opposed to a level based system (whereby you gain higher skills by... using your skills, rather than getting experience for killing stuff)

Now... again, I realise that what I'm looking for probably doesn't exist, but is there anything that's close?

I just found Shadowbane recently, and it seems to be verry much what I wanted. Too bad the game is 6 years old, comes with a point and click interface and... well... looks like ass... Oh, and it seems like the devs have given up on it now that it's free to play...

I may end up sticking with Shadowbade anyways, but I was hoping you guys may have other ideas.

Neocron is the game you just talked about.

SpellsGuns, etc need to be player crafted.  You can buy low-quality ones from the npc stores then those need to be researched then constructed.

The interface is pretty good.  It's a first person perspective, but also a toggle for third person.

There are outposts that can be taken over by clans and foughtdefended for.

There are no levels... There's 5 base skills.  If you use a spell you will level up your Intelligence and PSI power.  If you use a pistol you will level up INT and DEX.  If you use a cannon you will level up STR, DEX.  There is also CON (Constitution.) which has resists to certain things: fire, energy, xray, poison. So there are many different builds you could come up with.  You are not restricted.  Though, not all builds work well in PvP.

Edit: Oh, just one problem.  The game has more bugs that you will be able to count. The lag is horrible and the community is not what it used to be.  The Neocron dev team is the worst by far.  They only listen to whiners on their forums and will do anything to please them.  This game is not dead yet but it should be.  It should die and another development team should pick up where the others left off.  That is the only way Neocron would make it bigger.

Ok, I assume you mean Neocrom 2.

    I'm checking it out.

  • ShiinekoShiineko Member Posts: 161
Yeah, Neocron 2.  You can check it out if you want. However, I do hope you check back here before you do... Please, if you DO get that game DO NOT USE CLICK2PAY. You will most likely be ripped off, charged more or double.  PayByCash is a good one to use, but... you WILL be charged more. It's a total of $45~ to purchase the game online...

See, it's not just their game that has issues. They refuse to get new billing systems and their primary one (click2pay) is a huge ripoff.  Don't believe me?  Check out the forums!

Don't think I'm a hater of the game.  It's quite the opposite, really.  I have not found a game as good as Neocron since I first played it back in 2002.  It's just that the game needs a new development team (not a single one of them should remain on it...) to fix all the issues, get new servers, and get a new billing system!

Their GM's are pretty good, though.  I remember fighting one of them in Pepper Park sec 1.  He didn't kill me directly... he spawned a badass mob behind me to take me out, heh.  There were many fun times in Neocron I won't forget.

Well, I was just checking out the free trial anyway. Thanks for the heads up about the pay systems though.

But... I'm not really holding my breath considering what you have to say about the service...

    Any other ideas?

Heh, I really don't know.  I wish there were some good Neocron clones out there.  Tabula Rasa might be something to check out-- but you'd have to wait for that.  I just quit playing Auto Assault a couple days ago, soo... I'm inbetween games right now..  Waiting for something to come out and looking for something to occupy my time with until then.

Let's help each other out!  If you find something that doesn't suck reply back here and we can both check out.

Check out EVE, the game is mainly player run. EVE is also a rather unique game that may or may not be to your liking but check it out.

Face of Mankind is the game you are describing. It is a lot like Neocron. It even has alot of people playing that came from Neocron.

The game is about your role in a world where 8 factions fight over territorial, economical and political control. It is open ended.  The combat system is about skill & equipement not levels.  Traders &  Medics have some  difference in efficiency ranging from 0-20% now  at  the first ranks.

The comunity is still small. It went retail a few months ago and the developers are still implementing new things & bugfixing. I think that in 2 months the game is ready for advertising.

You might also want to try a title called RF Online by codemasters. It has a grind to begin with but the 30+ players get to participate in a chip war every eight hours. The war determines who gets control of the mine to get out precious minerals and the minerals then exchange for gold which supports each of the 3 warring races economies. The ore mined can also be used by crafters for gear or refined to get "talics" or items that will improve weapon stats. If a nation wins too much and too much gold is going through the system their taxes will raise accordingly increasing the cost of items for that race in their specific currency.

Yeah, so I figured that could be the sort of game your looking for, the entire focus is on RvRvR (three warring races: Accretia, Cora, Bellato) over resources.

As for the skill system there are 2 levels of it: One is the standard levels which go by quick the other is the point system where you earn points in skills by using them a lot (i.e. use a move all day and it levels up) to level up with low points makes your character weaker than the others so those who spend time getting them up will decimate the others in the wars. So the levels really take a back seat to the skill leveling.

The game is new and the GMs and staff are pretty helpful and new content/fixes seems to be coming in at an okay pace.

The only downside I would say is that the PvE isn't the most interesting thing in the world.

The exact game you are looking for doesn't exist ... yet.  The Chronicle is shaping up to pretty much be the game you're looking for.

It is PvP, has player crafting for items, buildings, and entire cities.  Crafting is also meaningful as the most powerful items will be crafted from items dropped from epic type mobs.  Also, since its PvP and there is full loot, crafters will need to crank out a lot of equipment to replace.

The combat itself is FPS, much like Oblivion with hit boxes and differing types of damage effects based on where you hit the person.  In The Chronicle, just as an example, you'll actually be able to aim for a person's knees in an attempt to slow them down or the head in order to stun them.

You will have to fight over territory to be able to establish your cities and essentially for control over resources.  The game sports an Emergent AI system in which the NPCs go about their own lives and pretty much play the game as if they were other players.

The game is also straight up skill based.  You gain skill by using it.

The graphics are also amazing.  It has all the latest bells and whistles that are available now and then some.

I actually got the chance to go to the studio and watch the development team at work.  Its shaping up to be a pretty sweet project.  Their new website is done, they just haven't released it yet.  They're waiting for more information to be available so they can inundate the public in a massive media blitz.  Its quiet right now, but you'll hear from them about it soon enough.

In the meantime, the website is http://www.mmocenter.com

They're also working on 2 other projects at the moment, so its an entire service, not just one game.

Off hand, I'd say you want EVE online.

I agree. It has everything he is looking for, maybe not in the form he wants. If he can assimilate to the ship based enviroment, rather than the avatar enviroment I think he would really enjoy it.

Like the guys said, EVE might be for you but I'd suggest you check out Darkfall Online too. Conceptually, quite similiar to EVE, except it's an avatar based MMO, it takes alot from FPS gaming too (don't let that put you off =p).

Yes, Darkfall may be very close to what you describe.

The bonus too is that it is really starting to look like it will be released. Been worried about that the last 2 years, but looks like it has a very real chane here lately.
