It was the ostensibly free game for pioneers who pre-ordered DnL. In other words, pay approx $60 for pre-ordering DnL and receive SoG to play whilst you wait for DnL. Dependent on who you talk to - beta testers or fanbois - SoG = DnL or a very early version of DnL stripped off the content.
Ask yourself this question: why on earth would any self-respecting company inflict SoG on the market as a promotional tool. Freebie? Wake up and smell the coffee! It's a promotional tool to whet the appetite until DnL.
Yes, I am biased; yes, I have already nailed my colours against the mast; yes, I have never played SoG. I have read an awful lot around DnL, followed it for around a year and then lost interest around a year ago.
If you read the threads in this section, you can read between the two polarized camps and make up your own mind. Up to you to make your own judgement call, either way. All I will say is that NO-ONe can say that they were not warned.

SOG is some extra crap the company spew out before the game should be released. Like "something to do while waiting".
Allthough the whole SOG thing really was the bottom at least they learned now that when planning huge events, learn to make sure that the game doesn't crash due to too many people logging in!

But..but... Its "The Largest MMORPG You Have Ever Seen!" 1 Server able to handle thousands of players online at the same time!

and I thot they wouldnt have learned anythign from SOG since SOG isnt supposed to be DNL and it isnt supposed to be a prepay open beta test so anything that may be wrong and talked about couldnt possibly be fixed for the real game since this wasnt a beta but the CEO states it was and it has a reworked engine so they couldnt possibly learn anything from the SOG engine since SOG is not DNL so maybe you should read the CEO statement again.

*sigh* where are you'r ","'s man? So incomprehensible to read...
It was definitly not a waste experience for them to make SOG so of course they learned something. They launched their first "game" which people could log into. They solved the problem with people not being able to log in and patched the game at a later basis.

What game you playing man? People STILL have problems logging in! There are countless posts on the dnl boards and the answer they got? "Since the devs are busy working on DNL, it wont be fixed for now"..HAH! Again, like there is some super secret miracle build behind the scenes that has nothing to do with SOG. And btw dude? The patch messed it up with a new one. Now there is the latest bug on loggin in and staying in. You definitely arent playing SOG right now nor paying attention to the DNL boards are you?

*smacks forehead*
People might have problems logging in but it's obvious you didn't play SOG when it launched since my obvious compareation was how SOG was at launch and how it's performance was changed for the better some weeks afterwards.
I am not playing SOG now because it's crap. But I did play at launch and some time afterwards. Too bad you didn't so you could see that SOME THINGS actually HAVE changed for the better.

I believe Alouisious (however you spell it dangit Alou! LOL) does in fact still have his pioneer account active and is known ingame by another name. There are in fact a few ppl here who still have their pioneer account active. I also believe Alou stated a few times he has been on the boards for 3 years at dnl. So ASSuming he isnt playing the game (when just reading a few posts you would have learned that he is in fact an active long term wasfan/currentplayer) is just "stupid".
You stated log in probs were fixed. Then you state they may be having probs loggin in. You accuse another of not knowing anything cuz you assume he isnt currently playing. Then you turn around and state you quit playing.
Reading the boards at dnl and other sites, you dont have to play the game anymore to know there are still problems, they havent "fixed" anything, the FANS provided "workarounds". You dont have to play the game to know that they have not worked out the bugs with a group of ppl in one place and have it not crash on ppl. They havent fixed a thing. Its simply that there are not as many players anymore, thus the crashes and bugs are less noticeable.
And btw -- even tho I have refunded my own money , my lovely friend and neighbor still has the account and we both occasionally try to log in and see the state of the game and try to participate in the jokes they call events -- so yeh I see the game still at the very least once a week. With a bucket of popcorn, sodie pop and Goobers right beside us.

Yes, there were some major steps forward after the initial launch.
The DnL website came back up. The forums were re-activated. MIRC had it's download rate skyrocket. You could log in at least once or twice a day. And the biggest improvement: There were NPCs scattered around.
Did they ever improve the player to mob ratio, or did that clear up after people started refusing to play?

Let's be scientific about this, DuraheLL. Practically every improvement in SoG since it was released can be explained by the steady decline in the number of people tying to login and play the game. From 5,000+ trying to play SoG for the first month to below 300 people playing regularly now.
It would be interesting to see what would happened if everyone who can access SoG--me included, but haven't even tried to play since January--tried to login and play right now? My gut feeling is we would see the exact same issues we had back in December.

Naah I don't think so mate. But if it indeed DOES occur again with DNL, I will have a lot of fun about it

We all will sit down in our seats, grab the popcorn, slushies, goobers, good & plenty and tell the guy in front to put his damn shoes back on and watch the show. If they did try to relive the mass invasion of players logging in again, it would indeed happen all over again as it STILL is happening, just not as much simply due to there being so little active players left. They havent "fixed" anything. The fans made 'workarounds' and the players quit trying. There are even new ones coming out.
So restock the canteen and prepare to be entertained.
