good for the populations thats for sure. i know i wouldn't touch a mmorpg with a console to save my life, unless it was a sports one like pangya or ubo

  • ifartedifarted Member Posts: 4

Sounds like a good idea. Now the only thing they need to do is to make a game that I  would want to play.

I'm of two minds on this one. Porting games from the PC to a console usually doesn't work very well. Come to think of it, porting from consoles to PCs doesn't really work either. This isn't to say that either console or PC games suck, it's just that the games are so different from an interface point of view.

EQ was an extremely popular game on the PC, but when they ported it to the PS2 with EQOA the experience didn't compare. In the opposit direction, Phantasy Star Online was freakin' awsome on the Dreamcast but just didn't feel right when they moved it to the PC with Phantasy Star: Blue Burst. There is a saving grace for transfering games from a console to a PC; you can make a console port playable by using a 4-axis 12 button controller. Unfortunately, you can't really hook a keyboard and mouse to your console without jumping through a few hoops.

There is a market for a console MMORPG, but they need to design such a beast SPECIFICALLY for consoles.

So I guess that this is one of the reasons for the NGE for SWG.  A redesign that can take advantage of the Console and PC.  The big question now is will the servers be the same?

In no way am I bashing SOE.   It just looks like they made the NGE to appeal to the Console crowd.  EQ2 and the others if this happens will not be changed in any way.

    O M G !!!

This means that all that stuff people said about SWG being nerfed down to a console game might have been true.

Im SO shocked I can hardly think.

Is it just me, or does all this just seem to be summed up perfectly in two little words... "Corporate GREED" ??

Are you retarded? Seriously. It's greedy for a company to use it's other resources to make money? Guess every company on the planet is greedy as fuck.

The Sigil / SOE was one thing to be all mad about, but this is brutal, we get it, you all hate SOE, but this in no way affects ANYBODY except those that want to play MMO's on their shiny new PS3s when they are released.

Ever since the SOE / Sigil announcement this forum community has become such a huge shit pile. Every god damn drama queen trying to incorporate SOE into every thread and bash them over and over, then make 918 threads about the same shit, then get mad about something that is a smart move to any logical person.

All you drama queens should just leave, it would make this forum so much better so we could discuss MMO things besides how much everyone hates SOE all day.

It's creating a differnt genre. Complexity goes out of the window for this.

I;d say we'll soon be distuinguishing multi-platform MMO's and pc-only MMO's from eachother by actual different names. They'll both feature many players online, but tbh, the complexity value of the MMO's today is already wildly different, and catering to consoles is not going to decrease that trend of diverging designs.

I't good in one way however. It will draw an even bigger crowd to teh MMO, and some of thsoe will change over to more advanced complex MMO's and may give a future one a shot of becoming really big in the industry.

Although I want a PS3, I REALLY dont want to play any of those games, but I think EQ2 might grab some normally console gamers into the MMORPG market.  I think its an excellent move for Sony to do this.

There is no real differance between the concols today and computers. Just the OS/system.

I am REALLY looking forward to this. Finnaly I might get to play EQ2 on the max without as much as a hicup. And its cheaper buying a PS3 then having to upgrade the PC.

The only thing that conserns me is the controll. They HAVE to make a Keyboard/mouse for the PS3 now. No way you can play a mmorpg like EQ2 with a pad.

As awfull as the NGE is I don't think it was done to make the game better for the console. FFXI started on the console and it has alot of depth.

You forgot as well, PS3 is going to cost at whopping $599.99  I think there is another version that is $100.00 lower if I am not mistake. Alot of money to play SWG imo.

With that amount of money, you can make your own PC computer or better yet, upgrade your personally wardrobe  at the local/outlet mall.

SWG on Console?! a game that has gone down the poop shoot even more.

Get your head out Highplains.  I'm as against consoles as the next guy but people aren't going to buy the damn console to play the MMO... they're going to buy it because they want one.  And then they might buy the MMO's to play ON the console though.   If it works SOE is genius...  If it doesn't work?  They wasted a bunch of money porting the game to console...

In the end?  Who cares, if it brings more people into the MMORPG genre I count it as a good thing.

Besides, if all you care about is SOE's games collapsing just think how bad the communities in those games are going to be once the console kiddies start playing them :)

On the other hand, if you actually READ the article you'll see that it doesn't say a damn thing about them offering this service on the PS3.  Sony announced that it's kicking off LaunchPad for COMPUTERS.  A service kind of like XFire but sounds like it will only support SOE titles...  The article writer is ASSUMING they're going to put it on the PS3... nothing from Sony that confirms.  Unless I missed something in the article....

I don't always agree with everything you write El, although I guess most of the time I'm not directly opposed either, but when your right, your dead on.

Does it really matter how a person that you've met online is accessing the game your both playing. You've met them, you both along, everyone has fun. Yay !!! It's exciting, isn't it ?

Good for them and good for SOE for trying to open up barriers. Yes of course it's a means of getting more money, better income, but there's a positive side effect here, more gamers. And how in the world could that EVER be a bad thing ?

That article is a very confusing read. If you don't read it and don't know about the launch dates for the PS3, it leads you to think the launch pad is on the ps3, it's not. The article states:
"Sony Online Entertainment in July will debut a service, known by its
working title LaunchPad, which provides users access to several of its
    online PC games."

The PS3 is set to launch in November in Japan and NA. So the launchpad they are talking about is for the PC. That ties in with the recent announcement of a price increase by Sony. There simply isn't enough time for Sony to reprogram 10 major online games to work on their console. It's not a pc after all.

SSSSh, the SWG vets will call foul on that logic because it doesn't fit the agenda.

Fitting their agenda or not, the article is horribly written. If one doesn't know the launch date of the PS3, they would think the launch pad was for the ps3.

Sorry El, was'nt just speaking of SWG in general but the whole PS3 scenario. Will I buy a PS3? Not until that price comes down. I am not agaist console riggs, but too pay that much for one is simply crazy! I don't even care if someone says, but it got the blue ray technology.

I still find it hard to even purchase a Xbox 360 at this point. Console Riggs are way over priced for what they do. I remember when the original xbox came out, it was like $300.00 bucks and they said that they were losing money making these things at the time.

Now they sell for half the price and still pump them out. PS2 sells for $125.00 which sold for the same amount.

Commodore 64 computers sold for $300.00 in the days and remember my parents buying me it. The colecovision was like $199.99 and I can go on. But simple $600.00 bucks for a PS3? LOL

    INSANE I SAY simply INSANE!

sorry.. didnt mean to Hi-Jack the message thread

Bogus.  A careful reading will show that the article talks about the PS3 at the top, then launches into a discussion of LaunchPad, a PC service, then finishes by talking about XBox and XBox live.

Maybe this service will be available on PS3.  Who knows.  The article certainly does not say so.

    Cool.

Those tired old Sony Games will be a real treat for consolers.

PS3 can easily handle running Planetside.

I wonder what hardware they will use for communications?

I guess they must have a keyboard of some description.

    GO PS3.
