Well, I haven't played a long time, but I have a level 39 Mutant Champion, and while I did take a stab at crafting, generally I don't have the patience for it.
By looking for good drops and checking vendors who sometimes have excellent merchandise (the more hidden they are, the better the stuff seems to be) I find very good items to use.
I have just started "farming" (pardon me while I puke after using that word) the Sour Mash instance. This is the toughest instance I have yet seen and it's making me rich. Cannot yet kill "Brewin'," the boss of the instance, but he is level 42 with 8000+ HPs but I did get him down to 1300 HPs at one point. His healers (two) go into overdrive and start giving him 407 pt. heals when he gets down to his last 2200 HPs -- so, I think it is planned that you need to be about level 40 to finally have enough offense and defense to beat him and his entourage of four (two guys with flamethrowers and two healers who also toss grenades at you).
What he drops, I do not yet know, but the instance is FULL of mobs who spawn back FAST and furious (there is a healing station near the exit so you can catch a quick heal if you need to). Some of the best drops were actually coming from the Payne vehicles that are throughout the area. And they spawn back so fast that I made TWO LEVELS in a few hours just killing stuff there.
Also, if you like farming, when you get to 30+ or so, go to Grand Junction (btw, those "twisters" you see roaming around in GJ are NOT just scenary) and find a big group of infantry with no high-level vehicles around. RUN THEM OVER. They occasionally drop items (got three Ultra Rares in a couple hours) which can be sold for big money for a low level character. Careful though, they will drop mines which blow up if you get near and do fairly a large amount of damage -- so it's not risk free.
Without crafting anything useful (although I do have 10/10 Tinkering skill which I find useful), I purchased a Westside Prowler (a.k.a. Mauler) for 104 scrip and now have it outfitted with some really excellent 15 DPS Rare weapons (22 DPS installed) and the Sour Mash instance dropped me a fantastic new mine-dropping Rear Weapon which does the 50-75 normal damage plus an additional 10-10 damage.
I always use powerplants which have very high Heat Dispersion, and those I can generally find at merchant vendors who are hidden in some of the corners of the various zones.
Oh, I finally got a paintcan drop yesterday in Sour Mash. Now I can get my secondary color changed. Haven't seen a paintcan drop since the early levels.
The upcoming patch will address the issue of the lootdrops being too rare, which should please you as a farmer-type (which I prefer to call Hunter-Gatherer, but nobody else does).
But, crafting, while it CAN make very GOOD items, even special items, I would think that you will not be dependent on crafting to find the proper equipment.
(BTW, I filled BOTH inventory tabs in my vehicle yesterday in Sour Mash, so the drops are extremely good in there even without the patch.)
The game still is somewhat underpopulated, so I'd like to see a lot more players, also because I'd like to have the opportunity to "convoy" with other players. This game is already extremely solo-friendly, so any additions they add should be to make grouping up more popular.
(The new patch is going to add a lot of things including toughening up some of the NPCs -- so I hope they are not TOO tough.)
Nope crafting is optional however it does tend to help you out a bit. So far most of what I have I snagged from drops. Generally, my Turret Weapons I find broken and then fix.
My best drop so far would have to be the car I am driving now.
LOVE this car, LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!
I snagged this Basilisk off some little fat man I ran over while crossing a river/stream.
The Stats on the car are very nice for a level 30 drop loot bonus and all.
Almost everything equipped on my car I have gotten from a drop. The turret was broken so I fixed that and my good friend crafted the armour for me, everything else was a drop.
Oh and I did purchase the Monster Tires heh. My tinkering skill is only at a 4 so I am not very handy at opening slots and have managed to destroy more than I have opened so I am a little paranoid when it comes to opening those up just yet heh.
All in all I can say I really enjoy the crafting and once Auction Houses are brought into the game crafting I think will play far more of a role than it currently does in game but I do not think it will every be something you have to do in order to succeed in game.
thanks a lot guys (especially SpiritofGame, thanks for taking so much time to write that) for the help!
The community seems pretty cool, too bad that I cannot join you guys since I live in the EU (Germany). And afaik the population in the eu client is even smaller, but i don't really mind. I've played to lvl 8 in beta and loved the game i just wasn't sure if i can "hunt" for money and drops but now i am.
