<--Magic The Gathering: Official Card Trading Game-->

DuraheLLDuraheLL Member Posts: 2,951

Hi there, anyone who play Magic out there?

Got anything you want to discuss about it? Go ahead and do it here.

It was some time since I last played Magic The Gathering, some years ago. I quit some series after thhe VII serie, because it became so messy with all multicolored cards the new series gave out. And because I found out how much of a hobby game it was other than something anyone could participate in and have a quick bit of fun. You really had to buy ALOT of em cards to be successful or customize it by buying cards singular wise.

Anyhow, I am looking for a REALLY DETAILED GUIDE to how the game works. There are many things I don't know how they work fully, like "Banding", "Facing". Also WHEN and HOW MUCH you can boost abilities from characters which might be "Pay one red, creature get +1 +0 until end of turn". Can you pay that AFTER you have gone through the blocking phase making it a bit of a chock for the opponent to be hurled at a weak creature which all of a sudden grows into something truly hidious and dangerous.

Anyhow I really enjoy the card game and I think it's full of both funny and UNIQUE cards and tactics. For those who have been playing any other card games (Digimon, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Munchkin) check this one out if you crave something more advanced!

Yu-Gi-Oh! Cards rule!!!!!  I'm not such a freak, but I have cards, and sometimes i play with friends a little tournement, but I'm not that good!

Earlier I had about 500 pokémon-cards, but I sold them.  I never had magic cards, but, I stopped playing these trading card games, because now, I am most off the time on MSN or games

I don't know of any guides but i can help with a few question (upto 6th ed when I quit, still have about 5 full ringbinders of cards).

Banding : this allows creatures to form a group when attacking, the group can be as large as the number of creatures with banding +1. eg. you have 4 creatures, 2 have banding - you can have one group of 3, or two groups of 2. any damage taken by the group can be split how you like. eg. 2 creatures one with def 2, one with def 3 takes 3 damage. You can then give the first one 1 damage and the second one 2 damage and both live (but you cant give a creature more damage than its def). It gets helluva lot more complex when you start adding things like trample on top though.

    Facing : dunno, I can't remember it

Abilities like Pay one red, creature get +1 +0 until end of turn can only be used once unless the card says other wise eg. Pay one red, creature get +1 +0 until end of turn, you may do this only twice per turn .

think i might dig my cards out see what i can remember :)

I have something like that aswell. I just thought since I haven't used em in ages I should sort em if  I were to sell them (I've heard some cards sell for 60$ or more).

When I was browsing through the deck I suddenly felt that urge to try making a new deck for fun. And when I did I just had to have someone to test it against! So I managed to get another friend to start with them again :)

I was into pokemon cards. That is the only thing "pokemon" that still has my respect (but I stopped collecting). I have a whole booklet of it. I was in the league and I was a Rock, Water and Fire gym leader. I still got my badges.

Nice! I never took the gaming into tournamenting. I never had the deck for it. I loved playing with everything and all colors and custom made decks for specific types of opponents never caught my attention long enough :/

So it doesn't work when blocking? I have this enchantment ... cost 2 colorless, one white and a green. Pay one white and a green to have target creature gain First Strike, banding, trample or a +1 +1 counter :) Called "Nature's Blessing".

    Abilities like
Pay one red, creature get +1 +0 until end of turn can only be used once unless the card says other wise eg. Pay one red, creature get +1 +0 until end of turn, you may do this only twice per turn .

Ok, but I wondered if they (creature abilities or overall abilities, and instances) works at specific occations. Let's say you have a +3 +3 buff spell, you attack with your 1/1 creature and become blocked by a 2/2 creature, this would normally kill your 1/1, but what if you (after opponent chose his blocker) cast the +3 +3 buff? Will it count as "too late" or will the 1/1 kill the 2/2 ?

When Blocking you are allowed to team up creatures anyway, But I think it can be used (so that you can split the damage how you like). As to that card, I would choose First Strike or Trample every time :)

The ability counts as an instant. So you can use it after your creature is blocked but before any dmage is dealt.

    Hope this helped :)

I have played magic since 1995 and still do.  The banding stuff is right on, but not the abilities.

You can use an ability on a permanent as many times as you can pay the cost, unless it says otherwise.  So in the above example, you could give a creature +1/+0 for as much red mana as you could pay.  Even abilites that have "tap" as part of their cost can be used more than once per turn, provided you have some way to untap the permanent.

Abilities on permanents can be used any time instants are allowed to be used, unless they say otherwise (e.g. "play this ability as a sorcery"

I quit half way through the Kami block. The Japanese style of it was a turn off. I havne't gotten time to try the Ravica block.

    Anybody play Magic online?

Started playing magic the year ice age was released & stopped at homelands (which is the worst block ever, I can count 3 cards that where good). Started again with invasion block, then stopped, then tried again with kamigava & stopped yet again.
Main reasons are costs & not many people play around here (same 5-7 people always, few others that that collect only).

Magic Online is mission one crucial feature: temporary random boosters & temporary starter deck when playing against each other (outside of tournaments) (but then again this would probably be connected to a monthly fee to offset the loss in card sales).

Thanks Therooster and jdun1 for the nice sites, will check em out.

What do you people feel about magic in general going over to multicoloring above singular color decks? I feel that is happening anyway. Feels a bit strange and not as fun when buying cards since you want to make double color decks, and since you do have some double color decks you only want the cards which - examplewise - adds something for your black+green deck.

When a card shows up adding something for blue+red you go "well, another one to put in the huge pile i've been keeping in my closet all these years", instead of having a simple green or red card which you could use for your red or green deck ...

While I find this interesting in some points, when you have to think about your mana more carefully, I still feel it takes away much of the soul the 5 different colors have alone .... well just my thoughts.

Honestly, I don't like Magic Online a bit! Why would I have to buy a completely new deck when I have one of thousands of cards already? And still be forced to pay full price for the boosters online when they are just electronical?

It's a very neat idea to take it online BUT! It should be more adaptabe to the offline world or something. You should be able to scan your cards in real life and bring the over to the online world (haha). Well maby that sounds a little odd but I can't think of anything better :)

And yes there are not too many who you might know in general who play magic. I played before with 3 of my friends and had alot of fun (untill one of them made a goblin deck only which pwn'd me so bad I never wanted to see the game again :) ).

I've been thinking to check out some local tournaments and so forth, since the hobby shops has em' like all the time. But yet - then again, I'm not an extreme hobbyist and will surely loose to those who might have been gathering and trading to make special decks (imagine a deck built with only shadow creatures :S ).
