Ok, as advised by a few of you I got Guild wars. Now, I am faced with the question, should I start out with a pvp character or a rp character? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. The pros and cons of each would be nice.
I tend to suggest play a Rp char for at least 100-150 hours before a PvP char so you get A) Learn the basics, Unlocks such as runes, weap moids and runes and C) Experience
I agree whole hartedly with the previous posts start with a PvE character, and would add that you need to play a monk for quite a while to understand the workings of a Monk, thats the issue with most players is that they dont actually understand the relationship between there character and the rest of there team, the only primary I have not had time to explore fully is the Mesmer, every character has two main cookie cutter builds that just work so well, an expample is the W/Mo as much as I always laugh at this build it is an almost self sufficient toon, and the reverse build is a farmer build the Mo/w this game has endless builds really and after 12 or 13 months of on off play.
and one more thing in PvE its much easier in the beginning to have Monk as your secondary for mend ect.., and failing that Ranger for troll, by the time you hit the jungles and get perpetually posisoned by them spiders you will be glad you did, as your group monk will be spending all his time trying to stay alive himself.
theres no point in playing a pvp character cus you dont have ne of the skills unlocked so it would be a waste of time and no gain for yourself. I suggest playing a role playing character so that you get a good feel for the game and the character then move into pvp. good luck
an RP character, after you leveled up and got your armor/weapons (wich come quite naturally while playing) can do everything a pvp character can do too.
PvP characters i would describe as an easy way for experienced players to get lvl 20 + max gear when they need a specific class for a PvP match.
summary: a maxed out RP character can do everything a PvP character can. a PvP character can only fight in PvP and not enter any other areas, but starts at lvl 20 with max armor/weapons.
Start as a PVE character so you get a feel for the game once skills are unlocked, start a pvp character to build a specific character for pvp teams in pvp areanas

it doesn t work that way Bob.
an "RP" character can do both, all the PvE content and all the PvP content, however you start at lvl 1 and have to lvl up to 20
a "PvP" character can only access PvP areas and never PvE. however they start at lvl 20 with max damage weapons and maxed armor values.
so if you want to do only pvp and nothing else with your char: make a PvP character
if you want to PvE and/or PvP with your char eventually and don t mind having to level them up by playing the story missions/quests, make an RP character
if you are first starting the game: definitely go RP character since you will learn a lot about the game by playing the tutorial and the storyline missions, instead of looking silly while being killed over and over by players that know how to play much better in PvP
ALWAYS start playing gw with a roleplaying character! When you start you will have no additional skills unlocked, you will have no real knowledge of the skill or combat system and you will be flamed non-stop for being a "noob" in the pvp arenas. With a PvE character you can learn the basic of the game and gradually progress towards higher level play, allowing you to collect skills and possibly start figuring out some builds. This allows for nice transition into low level PvP where you will already have a grasp for combat and be able to know what works and what doesn't. Then as you get more and more experienced with medium and high level PvP you will gradually start "rerolling" PvP character for different character and team builds to suit a certain combat style. You can go from there to making your own PvP character builds and even further into making your own PvP and GvG team builds. This is where the fun truly lies in this game as your knowledge and skill is used and your own creation is put to the ultimate test. If you don't find this aspect fun you were never meant to be a skilled gamer! That's the game in a nutshell and I hope I've been able to help!
think of lvl 1 - 20 as one long (enjoyable) tutorial
and even when you've reached lvl 20 for the first time, there's probably quite a lot more builds or skill combos to try out. It's a gentle learning curve, but it's a dang long one
im playing since 13 of may 2005 mostly pve , its true i dont focus on unlocking stuff that much as i should .. so far i have about 300 to 400 skills unlocked , and there are about 900 in the whole game
i think the best way to make this games lasts without being boring at any point is
unlock all skills with your PVE chars , chage second professions , do what ever it takes
some items and runes are easyer to get with baltazar faction , might be a good option if you need it at a point and you didnt unlocked it in the pve
imo , to be what the comunity call a elite pvp player , you need to have all 900 skills , items , runes , etc unlocked , you can check in the priest of baltazar what you still need to unlock.
if your are familiar with all this stuff , im sure at this point you can even make good team builds for GvG and HA
i dont have a clue how long this takes , i have a 8 hour job , im a fan boy , i dont consider my selfe a casual player becose i play almost everyday , but i still have a long way to go before i have everything unlocked in the priest.
usually start as a RP character so you get the hang of the game and you just dont run in without any info.
but then again if you feel like your a hardcore 100 hours+ gamer like me than i recommend try out a PVP player first
hope it helped
