Is this game worth it?

eldareldar Member Posts: 108

I've been looking over screen shots and I think the graphics are alright...people are a little too zombie looking for my taste but that doesn't mean the game sucks. Is anyone playing this game that can tell if this game is worth it or a waste of time?

I have read a lot of messages saying it is interesting and a lot saying it sucks....

you're not exactley asking much here.

worth it in regaurds to what?

its in beta, so you're not paying. if you mean is it worth your time to play, i would have to ask "define what is worth your time."

    that aside, my opinion:

1st off, you have to remember its beta. there are no crafting profs in yet. server performance can get a little sticky from time to time. the community feeling is a little lacking.
its kind of like only being able to play half the game.

there are no combat numbers. if you like to watch your damage given/taken tick away in the combat tab, you're going to be disappointed.

the graphics are pretty good. and i have to say, that for a beta game, the world is pretty impressive. killing things can be lots of fun, but kiting of mobs is still an issue. when i first started playing, it took me 20 minutes to kill a chicken because it would never stop running:::^)::

the leveling is pretty cool. its use-based. so when you successfully strike an opponent with your mace/sword/dagger/etc you gain a little xp, for example. It seems that you will NOT be able to level without being at your keyboard, which can make things a little tedious, since there's a lot of clicking involved. but on the other hand, people won't be uberizing their characters while they are in bed:::^)::

right now, you can mine rock, forage shrubs, axe some wood from trees, and fish. I have done all but fish so far, and each is pretty neat, and an easy way to make money. These are all also ways of raising your character attributes (as opposed to skills), ie - strength, constitution, etc.

All in all, i enjoy the game, but i cannot fulfill my gaming thirst with this beta alone (yet). soloing isn't much fun, and it can be a little hard to find a decent group.

that chat system needs a bit of a revamp, but like i've said, this is beta:::^)::

So would i say its worth it? I don't know.
I'd say its worth checking out for yourself, to decide if its worth it or not.

by the way, your icon RULES!!!!!!!!!! ....and as a monkey, i tried to wear the hat on my BUTT!!!!!

I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.

one thing that i forgot to bring up which is very important to some people, is the movement system.

    yes, it is point-n-click movement.

WASD/arrow keys are basically the camera control, while movement is completely mouse-driven. this alone is enough to keep a number of people away, seeing that some are strongly opposed to the PnC movement system.

it took a little adjusting, but by the end of the 1st time i logged in, i had a handle on the movement and camera controls, so i don't think its an issue if you're willing to give it a try.

anyway, feel free to ask specific things if you want, although because of my beta agreement, i might not be able to answer (which is why my answers might seem a little vague:::^)::)

and also, remember, this is just one person's (flon gerg) thoughts on the game:)

I'd say it's a cross between DAOC and Shadowbane.

I didn't like it, the battle system was to slow paced for me i liked DAOC better

I agree with the general statement here: The game is beta.  It's not going to be released till Q4, so give it some time.  I'll give a good report on it in June//July when the next beta is opened, and the game will probably have about 80% of its content installed (right now we're at about 10%).

As far as the skeleton of the game goes: the fact that it is on 1 server is cool.  The point and click movement is fine, but if you hate that, this game was just not meant for you.  There will probebly never be wasd movement.  Overall, the game does have potential... and over six months of development.

The NDA for Wish is so open so to answer your question...

It depends where you're coming from. Wish is not a powerlevelers game that's for sure. At first glance the graphics aren't very impressive, but once playing it, I fell in love with it! The lush forests and solid city structures are beautiful to look at, the sun sets a gorgeous red haze over the sky and the character models are very unique looking. As stated in the end of beta 1 dev chat posted on IGNs public Wish forum (http://vnboards.ign.com/board.asp?brd=22495) they recieved an updated toolkit for the NDL graphics engine about 2 weeks ago ... now, this graphics engine (NDL) is the SAME engine used to run Morrowind AND your beloved Dark Ages of Camelot so realize that there is plenty of potential for the graphics to improve! ... the devs already stated that bump mapping, pixel shaded weather effects and water along with other graphical improvements will be present in the next beta phase. You see, the problem is, the Devs haven't had TIME to look at this new toolkit yet. Reason being, they were working their butts of with beta phase 1!!! image

I've tested many games before (never a phase 1 test tho, usually the last phase of beta testing) and I must say that Wish is shaping up to be THEE mmorpg. the Developers are awseme to say the least. they actually listened to what the testers had to say and gave immediate feedback and answered ANY questions we had. A lot of people on these boards said this game was 'boring' and repetitive...all I can say is you didn't play the same game I was playing. EVERY single night the developers held LIVE quests that affected the whole Wish world. And it wasn't a simple, talk to this npc and to what he asks, kind of quest. There were four storyline Towns (called Houses) that were being used in this beta (there will be plenty more when the game is done) and each town was led by a Lord/Lady which was developer controlled. Now, They would speak in their respective towns about the quest and people as normal as you and me would be adding to the storyline as if they were programmed to! It was an incredible thing to see in terms of roleplaying. Now, I unfortunetly joined the beta halfway through so I missed a few quests, but the first quest I was part of was the conflict between the four houses. I was a member of Harborview, led by the "noble" Lord Essex. The next day, Harborview & Barleydale were at war against Flasthead and Forts of Cypress. This was a PvP (or HvH) event and it was a blast! pvp was very well controlled, it required team effort and no one person or class was overpowered. I mean, you could easily pick out those who were skilled at pvp and those who weren't (i was still learning the ropes myself) so it wasn't the kind of pvp were everyone was perfectly equal either. Many attacks took place on the towns and in the end, a cease fire was signed (boo! image)

A few days later, Lord Essex was outcasted from Harborview and our very own Lady Sundre Revenant was named guildmistress (she being a regular tester just like me!). This was the first time a town had been player controlled, and it was fantastic! Everyone was very well organized and we all (all four towns) were determined to rid the world free of Lord Essex's evil ways. In the final battle on the last day of beta testing, every tester (whether being part of a town or not) gathered at the crossroads just north of the starting town, where we were preparing to take down Lord Essex and his followers (all developer controlled and spiced up with uber stats and skills) Harborview gathered it's many warriors and mages and clerics, as did flatshead and forts of cypress. Barleydale however, decided they were gonig to bring a Treeant (remember those talking tree from lord of the rings?) to the battle. This thing was a good 30x the size of a regular player!!! anyways, lots of killing, lots of rezzing image (can you tell i played a cleric?) but the battle finished with a victory!

enough about the quests. now, This game is similar to UO in the skill gain aspect (the best way for an mmorpg to be). the classes are very well rounded so far (rogues were not implemented thus far). Combat was as fun as any other mmorpg i've played, and many improvements will follow. and Pathfinding! oh the pathfinding!!! it's GODLY! you could be at the top of a 4 story building and click on the outside ground and your character will navigate its way through the building flawlessly! I love it.

as you can see, this is by far the best mmorpg i've ever played, and it's only been in 1 beta stage. I recommend you all sign up for the next phase of testing that will start in june/july or else you will be sorry!

anything else you wanna know just ask

Its a beta game. Not finished. Buggy. Strange. But what does the future hold for it?

PnC movement is an aquired taste. Not sure yet if I have aquired it as of yet. Concept of the game is decent, though so far nothing to write home about. Graphically it has promise. We will see what it holds around the time it goes gold.

Really though beta is about 20% fun factor and 80% work. The work involved is to help the game designers and coders release a game with as few problems as possible. Too often beta testers are only into it for a free ride which is wrong in my opinion.

Yes i tihnk its worth it, because it is SO much better than other games in there beta stage, its more of an adult one though, because there are TONS or roleplayers, i mean TONS! (its fun) and the grpahics are good, but its like one of those "realistic" type graphics, which i HATE!

I like the world of warcraft approach, or Lineage 2 (he he I LOVE that game!)

    Hopfully that helped

  • YordoYordo Member Posts: 831
I didn't particularly like the game when I played it, but maybe that was because of the early stage in beta.  Hopefully in summer when they begin the next beta phase they will have made major changes the the game.  If not, they are going to have problems getting players hooked.

I think I read that you need to have very high specs to be able toplay this game (even when it goes gold so not only for beta).

One day all will die, surely you but never I.

Yes, that's another thing..the high system requirements.  It is not even as good of graphics as some of the other games coming out who have lower requirements.

I tested the game and it didn't hold my interest as far as "fun". I kept playing it to try and help debug things but eventually got so bored I just stopped. The graphics are ok except for the character models. The elves look like crack addicts like Shadowbane elves (and from the looks of it Warhammers human females). The point and click was annoying beyond belief for someone who doesn't like that style of movement. They had no plans to make it work for mouse movement style last I saw. Infact they got pretty "twisted" when people brought it up to them repeatedly.

I think you pegged it right when you said updated UO. The skill system reminds me of it a LOT as well as all the trade skill stuff.

All in all it wont be a game I personally play. I prefer things like EQ, DAoC, AO, FFXI and looking forward to checking out WoW and perhaps EQ2.

It blows. Hard. Thats just my opinion, I played for about a day and gave it up for KO (which I dont like either but stuck around for closed) for two primary reasons. 1) The graphics are brutal for a 2nd generation mmorpg. And I'm not buying thats it because its in beta, the engine is the engine. If you think they are all of a sudden going to hire a team of new artists and designers and redesign the landscape and characters, that sounds a little naive to me. Look at alpha screens for EQ2 or WoW or Guild Wars. Those are graphics. And 2) like everyone says, its PnC, which absolutely KILLS emersion.  I'm open minded, had I seen something compelling I'd have stuck it out to try and deal with the movement system. But I didnt. Oh yeah, and it might have changed, but the dev team, particularly one individual, was coming across like an anal-retentive fascist when confronted with logical differences of opinion on the board. That was a real turn-off for me. Beta is about listening to the testers, and even if you dont agree or it simply cant be done, dont be a prick about it.  Like I said, I didnt stick around, and one of the fanboys posted up there ^ that the team seems pretty good, so there you go.

Well, I agree that I did not like it initially in the first phases of beta.  I am hoping that they make some major gameplay improvements before the next phase of beta, which I believe will be in summer.  If the game came out right now, it would really struggle, but I still have some confidence in the Dev team.

I've actually been enjoying Wish immensely. The point-and-click aspect is actually a feature I rather enjoy about the game.  At first, I found it a bit awkward, but you can just click on a spot far, far away, and let your character run or walk to that destination while you pan your camera around and really take in the whole beautiful view around you.  I find that so relaxing and something I've never been able to do in any other game.  Another strong and lasting impression I have from this game is the exhilaration I get when hunting with really large groups of players.  It's comparable to being at a baseball game cheering on your favorite team.  The sounds, the quick action going on all around you....  I love it!  And it's just not quite the same in any other game I've played to this date. The devs have already stated that they will be making huge improvements on the graphics and the entire crafting system hasn't even been implemented yet.  But so far, I personally see the devs listening very open-mindedly to the beta testers.  At least they seem to be listening to MY suggestions and comments...  I can't speak for everyone.  I like where the game is heading so far, but yes, it is in its very earliest stages of beta, so one really shouldn't judge it as of yet.  All I can truly say is that I'm suffering from withdrawal as the server is closed currently image

Found it the worst beta ive been in yet ,and ive done all of the mmos on the left except 3 in beta.

Its awful. Graphics are dated and ancient yet require a gf4 lol why i dont know as it looks terrible right now ( beta or not i dont care it looks terrible by comparable standards)

Control method is lame. Dont care what crap they use to justify it ,its crap. There no plans even to allow user definable keys lol. Combat is  rubbish.

In fact theres nothing i can actually  bum about this game except that it will never ever challenge the heavy hitters or even come close.

Dude you played a beta 1, which was there to test their technology and live content system. The game is currentley undergoing the main graphics and gameplay work during the 1.5 test.

Just wait till the summer when you play beta 2, I'm sure you'll be pleasentley suprised.

  • DarktongueDarktongue Member Posts: 276

Highly doubt it when the devs openly refuse to take on board or even listen to a vast majority of testers on certain subjects.

There is nothing this brings to the mmo field that any other mmo hasnt already done or will do better this year. The terrible dated graphics they had/have still needed gf4 not mmx either yet it looked like a cows arse on a hot day.

I would put hard earned cash on this failing worse than Horizons.

  • MansonNailsMansonNails Member Posts: 10

That's funny, because most of what they're implementing currently is exactly what I had in mind for the game and /or personally suggested.  So, they're catering the game to players like me as far as I'm concerned, and I'm thrilled to be a part of it.

And if we don't get to see you in beta 2 with the improved graphics and additional content, no one will miss you.

You'd be suprised at the number of things that are being asked on the forums now about such and such idea that was put forward during beta 1, and then we'll get a response to say that they're already working on it.

Aw, someone's cranky. Someone didnt get their bottle before being tucked in. What's the matter? The devs ignore you when you went on an immature child like temper tantrum and didnt get what you wanted?

Kinda weird you would say that and there so many people actually in beta who would testify the devs implementing so many tester generated ideas.

I get it, you're still pouting about PnC because it doesnt fit your small myopic definition of controls for a game.

Ah, i get it, you're either illiterate or beta player and not a tester. You didnt read that they were using an old NDL engine for that beta. You didnt read that they hadnt implemented bump mapping for that beta. So you either didnt read that on every single beta board, couldnt comprehend it, or didnt figured like every other game in beta one, what you see is what you get.

Oh wait, beta one is early and things have about 9 onths to change, like bump mapping, the graphics engine. Guess you didnt know that. So that would point to you being a beta player and not a tester. Now your immature short sighted attitide makes sense.

Oh, please point me to the MMOG that has already done a fully staffed live story team that will direct dynamic content and story? Oh, cant, huh? Guess you were lying there, or just talking out of your ass.

Ok, how about any MMOG in development now that is bringing a fully staffed live story team that will direct dynamic content and story? Damn, cant list one of them either, huh? Guess you were lying there, or just talking out of your ass.

And btw, if you do come up with one that has a fully staffed live story team that will direct dynamic content and story either in release or beta, please detail to me how they will do that better. kthx.

I'm guessing you cant because, once again, you prefer to talk out of your ass than provide any sort of substance through explanation, understanding, or examples.

As many have said this is BETA 1 with an old NDL. open beta 2 will start june/july right now there are a lot of things being done. Most of it came from beta 1 tester Ideas. I saw where someone said no numbers because BETA TESTERS asked for it Numbers will be there crafting will be in for open beta 2. right now being tested in closed beta 1.5. Two new reaces are added imps and dragonkin.

Not sure what game you beta tested but in WISH I only saw a few question asked that the DEVs did not respond to. and of those few some were asked before.

As for the bet this game will fail I'll take that bet also

  • planirplanir Member Posts: 3

Id put money on the fact the his certain subject was point and click.

They obviously arent going to change it when they have based everything around it.

For some reason the testers that were complaining couldnt come to grips with that fact...

The games live events have the potential to make it a great game, kinda like being in some medieval tv show in game. Something different anyways.
