Noob Q&A

ThogrimThogrim Member Posts: 27

So I'm starting SOR tonight when I get off work, and I have a few questions to ask all you veteran players.

First off,  I noticed in the reviews that its skill/class system has been likened to Pre NGE SWG, and I was wondering in what ways is it like SWG?

Second, I noticed when I started my new avatar (Aachen) I had a list of skill packs? that where available to me, so I just left it at default and called it good. So I'm wondering how this feature affects your gaming experience?

Otherwise, any other tips would be appreaciated.

I don't know how the skill system is similar to that of pre-NGE SWG, since I didn't play SWG.

Those just determine what actions and items you start with.

For example, if you select three Fight packs, you get a 1-handed sword and a dagger (which can be dual-wielded together), and several melee fighting actions.

If you select one Magic pack, you get an offensive Acid Damage spell and magic amplifier gloves. If you select two Magic packs, you get that and a healing spell (others, not yourself - Self Heal Life can be bought with skill points (SP) from any trainer). If you select three Magic packs, you get all that plus some affliction spells I think.

If you select one Craft pack, you get some generic materials, a crafting tool, and one item crafting plan. With two or three Craft packs, you start with more materials, tools, and plans.

And so on. Ultimately, the starter packs you choose at character creation make little or no difference, because you can always buy skills such as Crafting Start, Magic Start, Basic Extraction (harvesting), etc. for 50SP at a trainer. They just make it a bit easier to get started with particular skills. For example, if you knew you liked crafting, you might want to get more than one Craft pack.

    Welcome! ::::01::

I never played Star Wars Galaxies either, but we have got quite a few SWG refugees and they seem to enjoy the game. Take a look at the guild Team Spirit's forum http://tappi.dyndns.org/forum/

Or specify what you liked about SWG.

Let me give you an SWG refugee overview.  I have been playing this game for close to two months now.  I had 9 accounts for SWG and loved all of my toons.  They ranged from TKM, Doc, MBE, MCH, Tailor and Entertainer.  I also had an armor and weapons master crafter.

Skill Based - Say you like fighting, then you never have to craft or harvest or use any magic unless perhaps you like what the magic does as far as the fight goes.

Fighting is diversififed so if you prefer ranged over melee then train in the ranged aspects of the game.  The thing about this game is that you dont have to only train in ranged, you can train any and everything that you want to.

Crafting - I used to create some really good stims in SWG and we all know that in that game certain crafters set them selves apart from others by the quality of the items they create.  This game is no different, you find the best resources and can even add special abilities to your items.  You can make a name for your self with the type of crafting you do.  As with fighting, you are not confined to only 1 type of craft.  You are not limited to only 250 sp per toon, you can learn every type, you just have to get the xp  and time to get trained.

Harvesting - The funny thing in this game about harvesting is that the piles of green goo that you are using your pick on can and will blow up and plant your dead body in the ground. lol  You have to figure out what works best so its not just a gimmie on getting the resources.  There are skills that can be learned to help you harvest more and better resources safer.  Its a thinking game when it comes to this.  Oh yeah, you start with 3 action packs so if you come in and you didnt pick up harvesting it only costs you 20 sp to train this where as the others cost the 50 sp to start if you didnt have it from the get go.

Magic - I picked up magic because I wanted to heal others.  Cant get away from being a master doc I suppose.  I created 5 toons total and only one is still on the noob island, I left her there on purpose.  A couple of the toons that I brought over to the mainland where all the vet players for SoR are at.  I watched a higer level person demolish some creatures with magic.  Its kinda hard to level magic right at first from what I have seen but the benefits look really good.  My little group of SWG noobs got our silly butts killed and the vet player in one shot rezd us in one shot to full health on all stats.

Tip:  You should really pick up magic, even if its only just for some heals.  The easiest way I found to bring up both magic and fight at the same time is to hit the creature with magic for the first shot then use your weapons.  It will split the xp so you are training both skills at the same time.

Creatures - I love and miss my creature handler.  In this game you can get what are called Mekotub (spelling).  These things are not cheap.  They have like 2 types that I have seen.  One is a pack animal and the other is a mount.  The pack animal I think you can get for 100k and the mount is around 500k.  I dont have one yet that is why I am leaving one toon on the noob island to make and sell stuff so I can at least have the pack animal when I cross over to the mainland.

Pack animals act like inventory and you will see when you play and harvest stuff off of the creatures that you will get a full inventory so they should come in handy.

Merchant - Well you cant have a merchant persay in this game as we used to but you can either sell the stuff you harvest or craft to these NPC's that everyone uses.  You can choose to sell outright to the NPC or there is an option to sell to other players.  Say for instance you make and item and want to sell it to players.  The NPC will give you like 700 for the item and it tells you that if you sell to players you will get an additional 300.  You will get the 700 up front and when a player buys the item you get the other money.  Just an example and the item values will differ.

Housing - Now this was a little crazy but they do have apartments.  They are very $$$ and I have not seen what they look like inside since I cant affrord one yet.  I think they act like storage but I cant say for sure.  I dont think we will get all the options we liked in SWG such as decorating it and inviting others inside.

PvP - The system works kind of like the GCW.  You must accept a duel or go on status and from what I hear there are areas for PvP battle.  I am not much of a PvP player so cant comment more on this.

I think I covered everything. lol  If you make a Tryker and want some help I have a toon on the noob island still named Ravensong.  I am not going to be on to much though since I am in the process of moving and just dont have time.  I leave the state of Alaska on Saturday for my long, long, very long, Did I mention long drive to the lower 48.  Hope the info helps.

*A little advice*  If you come in and compare it completely to SWG you will not be happy.  I am having fun with the game and try not to compare to much because honestly I would drop this game in a heartbeat if pre-cu ever came back.  Oh yeah and if it were not ran by $OE.  Good luck.

I'm starting to see why people who played SWG moved to this game. Although I am disapointed with the fact that there's just really expensive apartments rather that player housing, I do like the crafting/skill system. So far I've just been crafting boots and vest and killing the noob mobs, but so far, its a very interesting game. Noticing the "dying while gathering resources" aspect of the game too.

This is actually the second time I've tried SOR, the first time was beta testing while I was playing SWG. I liked the game from what I saw of it, but at that point the game was unplayable (artifacts, lag, collision detetion issues) so I didnt get that far. Anyway, I started a Mattis (spelling) and I think I'll stick with it until I get a feel for the game, then usually I start another avatar and talyor that one to what I like.

I also beta tested SoR during SWG. I enjoyed the game aswell. So! Do we have an official SWG Refugee Guild on SoR? If we don't we need to assemble and make one.

This is a Guild on the Arispotle Server, that is almost completely made up from SWG Refugees.

    Team Spirit Guild

Yup there is dualing.  There is also an arena for team pvp.  Faction PvP with optional flags is avaliable to those with enough fame too.  There is also Guild v Guild pvp where they fight over outposts.

So there is plenty of variety, all optional.
