I didnt think it was true.

50 million dollars seemed a little excessive for a remake of an older game.

People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.

damn, my rumor already spoiled before I could say "just joking" lol

but damn look at how much attention that it got. I think that Turbine needs to release AC1 with completely updated and competitive graphics. Why? Cuz just look.. duh there is a HUGE demand for it with all these crappy, over-streamlined gimpy mmos of the past 5 years or so.

AC1 with current graphics would rock. Everyone and their brother knows it to. I bet AC could have invested half the money they spent on D&D online or half what they spent on Lord of the Rings online and re-released AC1 with new, fresh servers and made a killing with the same advertising dollars that they spent on D&D Online. They would have made a lot more money and totally refreshed a kick ass game and brought it back to life. With all the new players in the mmo market today, i bet they could easily have over a million players with a graphically current re-release of AC1, same game... just new graphics and a fresh set of servers for players to start fresh.

AC1 rocks. You know it. And if you deny it, then you never really played AC1.

Sorry to upset those of you who got your hopes too high up. Was just a joke to see how much attention it would get, and for the short time it lasted before the rumor was busted, it honestly looks like AC1 would indeed get a HELL of lot attention.

Well, I have to admit, you "got me" lol. Heck, i barely even blinked at the 50 million dollar part of it,which is of course absolutely insane. Wouldnt come close to those kinds of costs. At any rate, it was a nice dream while it lasted.

Investing $50 million in Asheron's Call would probably be the best thing they ever did (besides producing AC in the first place).  God knows every other game they have done has been, ultimately, a flop.

If they do an overhaul of AC, I am there, baby!

    That's okay, all's forgiven.

Seriously though, I actually agree with the highlighted portion of your quote.

A brand-new Asheron's Call with new servers, all new graphics, motion-capture animations, assorted bells and whistles, and staying TRUE to the game mechanics of AC (as in, NOT AC2 crap) would find the old audience and a whole new audience as well.

The same could really be said of Ultima Online.  Remake that game with all brand new graphics, etc., while staying true to the original UO -- bang! -- you got a winner.

Same for a brand new EverQuest (NOT EQ2).

These were CLASSIC games, the best ever made and everybody who played them knows it.  It's no accident that these games are fondly remembered by many -- and many of the old players might even like their children to experience really immersive and exciting online fantasy entertainment (and it keeps the kids off the streets too -- MMORPGs = best babysitter ever).

I would also mention Anarchy Online as a truly innovative and fun game -- the first classic sci-fi MMORPG.  While I'm at it, how about a brand-new DAoC with a totally fresh game engine, etc.

There was never anything wrong with any of those games except their technology got "old and clunky."

    If they ever produced a brand-new "old" Asheron's Call, I'd pre-order the Collector's Edition in a heartbeat.

Absolutely Spirit... Any of the three big original mmorpgs (EQ, AC, or UO) would do very, very well with a fresh release with up-to-date graphics, and brand new servers so everyone could start fresh. I honestly think that no mmo has the heart and soul that gave Asherons Call so much life though. I personally would also pre-order a new version like the hoax here in a heartbeat.. as I'm sure many, many more would as well. There simply is no comparison when you compare the depth of a game like Asherons Call and a game like EQ2 or WoW.

Heh, come to think of it... I used to think that if I ever won like the 100 million dollor Powerball lottery that I would spend ten million or even more getting "my own version of the perfect mmo" out on the market. But now to think about it, If I was to win such a lottery, I would get with Turbine and personally finance a re-release of AC1 with some kick ass graphics. I would not really change the world though. I want all the old towns there. Maybe I'd re-arrange where the shops in each town were at just to change it up a little. I dunno. As said before, I would also make the monsters smarter and make them actually roam around rather then being so stationary. I would also make the buffs last longer like in the later patches as having to rebuff with twenty something buffs or more every ten minutes got kinda old. But I would probably go back to the old style of spell components. I kinda liked having to have all those old 57 different components. It was kinda cool to be out in the desert hunting and realize that you couldn't cast any more frost bolts because you ran out of "cobalt" or whatever. Also the different colored taper sequences for every player being different was kinda cool.

I loved the healing kits. Much more economical then a ton of heavy healing potions. I also love the crossed arms motion made when a player heals themselves. Very cool. I miss that. Actually I miss about everything with AC1, especially all the players. Now days it just feels like a handful of level 200+ toons running around goofin off. Man, oh man do I wish that the OP hadn't been a rumor or joke but rather was the real deal. I'd be soooo happy to see this hoax actually be true.

Oh well. I can dream. All you people out there that actually think Guild Wars or WoW rocks really just don't have any idea what you are missing. And that IS the truth.

When the expansion was being made last year I thought that i would pay more than double if instead of an expansion they put a patch from around 2001 on a cd then just added the bug fixes required(making coords display properly and such).

I always thought AC would have been better with a lower level cap though. I think the level forever made too much of a range of content and the amount of hours required to level were  insane.

"Half-Life 2 engine rebuilt for online play"

Thank God somebody is finally rebuilding Half-Life so that it can be played online.

Asheron's Call was one of my favorite MMOs... mainly because I played it during beta and when it first came out. Asheron's Call was a very different game before taper patterns were figured out, exp chains were formed and bots (plat macros / combat macros) ruled the game.

Asheron's Call was the first MMO to allow players to actually dodge projectiles. Then again, Asheron's Call was one of the first MMOs to come out, too.

I'd love to see an updated graphics engine and a true re-release that included a brand new exploit free, bot free world. Maybe they could even bring back the old magic system and change things around a bit to bring back the mystery that new and uncharted MMOs have about them.

Then again I'd go for a re-released EQ or UO, too. Not just a new world, mind you... but a true re-release where the game was brought back to a like-new state.

AC was the very first MMO I ever tried. I played it for over a year. I stopped right around the time AC2 released and went to DAoC. I had many fond memories from AC.....

Then this Feb I gave it a try again. I was very disappointed. What is left of th community is mostly bots. Level caps increases do nothing to improve a game so I have no idea why they did it. The game does have some core mechanic issues that need to be addressed. EVERYTHING about the game is outdated. There have been no real improvements over the years at all. It is basically the same game it was 3 years ago. From an interface standpoint alone, that is very bad. The chat system, for example is hidiously clumsy to use. On and on.....I wish I never went back and checked it out.

The only plus it has going for it is the large amount of content it has. No game has ever been able to capture the vastness of the AC. But what good is it in a horribly neglected, bot infested world?

It is Turbine though and if there is a way to screw up a game, they will find it. Turbine has THE worse track record on the face of the planet when it comes to MMO's. They let AC die off, closed down AC2 and put out that P.O.S. D&DO.

Its going to take much more then a graphic facelift to save AC. Maybe they will get it right this time. I doubt it though.

As much as I hate to admit it, he's right. AC1 is currently taking a plummet in general population on the servers. Turbine is just lucky right now that those who still do play, have secondary accounts (usually) that they pay but I see people unsubscribing their "mule" (as in loot holder) accounts alot.
It's unfortunate but Turbine is not paying attention to this game and instead is letting it die. The only thing AC1 has going for it right now is the story-line.
I really don't know how Turbine is not realizing that they're losing more and more customers each day and actually keep the servers up. Maybe they're just so stuck up in DDO and LotRO right now.

AC1 right now is basically level-mania. Remember when it was hard to get to level 80 or 90? Well, you can probably get that in about an hour now if you really wanted to. Some are UCMing (unattended combat macro) which is against the ToS but AC1 is so low on money that they can't even enforce that rule anymore - they really only have 1 +Envoy (person who bans) working for them. They need more than that and some are quitting because they don't enforce their own rules anymore. Leveling is a endless grind to the maximum level (275) and the quests are very very outdated.

Like I said, I'm clueless why Turbine hasn't detected that they're losing subscribers right now and why they haven't done anything to save this game. Maybe they're telling us "we don't need you"? If nothing is done, I really expect this game to die sometime in August or September.

This was apparently debunked as a rumor by a Turbine Community Relations fellow on the official forums. It's really too bad.

I personally think there has been a stagnation of mmorpgs, that the new ones are more of the same.
I think the time is ripe to revamp an old game with completely updated graphics.   I think if Everquest were to overhaul its graphics I would try it.   If UO went 3-d with a new engine I would sign up for sure.

If UO got a graphics update I wouldn't be surprised if their number went through the roof. Almost everyone I've ever talked to or heard or read talking about the game say it's really the graphics engine that stops them from playing. Especailly if they tried it before. It's horrible, there is so much lag that it's just sad. Not the traditional lag either, the engine is so bad that the game tends to be choppy at times and pretty slow. Especailly the 3D engine, the 2D engine is better but not by much.

AC was the best MMORPG I played to date and here are the top 3 reasons why:

    - No real level cap!  Took a year for someone to reach 100 and even longer than that to reach the level cap of 126 and even then they could raise skills/abilities.
    - Different mobs were strong/weak against different attacks (blunt, cold, fire, etc.)
    - Spells: Just liked everything about the spell system!  From spell levels to spell components to spell fizzles the spell system just seemed far superior to anything I have played before or since.

I played AC at release... it was 'ok' then.  A remake of it now would be an 'ok' modern MMO... It'd be lucky to get 300k players.  Even in it's prime it never managed to rival EQ.

Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.

AC still rocks!! Are you kiddin me? I played WoW, DAoC and SWG... and they seemed slow paced and dumbed down in comparison to AC.... 7 different damage types... fire, acid, frost, lightning, pierce, slash, and bludgeon... then add rended weapons, critical strike and crippling blow weapons... its such a sick game. It's the closest MMO to playing a shooter that I've ever played, the fact that you can dodge war spells, arrows, etc.. if you are skilled enough with the keyboard.. it just genious..  I hated on DAoC and WoW that if the spell is cast, you just have to eat it.. there is no way to avoid it... yet, they could stand on a tower and be immune from attaclks. Not so in AC, you can duck behind a rock, tree, wall, etc... hear the spell bash against the obstruction and go back after the mage.

ANYWAYS, my real point for posting is that Turbine HAS officially announced a new advertising initiative and an entire hardware upgrade for all servers and databases. It was released in a "Letter to the Players" on the Turbine website.. and you can read it yourself at this link...

Evins, may I ask that you read my thread entitled "Would you play AC if..." and reply, as it seems you also love the old Asherons Call game. This thread is a hoax, but I would love to present a real idea of how much mmo players would really love something like this OP to be a reality instead.

I never played AC because of the bad reviews I heard. Now that it's ancient, there's no reason to try it.

As a side note, $50 million is a believable budget only for a new game, not a remake or a rehash.

  • MouthMouth Member Posts: 113

I believe this could well be true. AC was among many the greatest MMORPG around, but loads missed it due to its marketing and timing. Learning from the mistakes of AC2 a rebuilt, well marketed and well-launched AC could really take the market by storm.

But first... Age of Conan baby! :)

No link no proof.Just a crappy rumour.

AC1 never barely had 100k subs at its peak and spending that much money on a remake is ofc not even probable.

They are already in the dee end with AC2 been a failure and closing,DDO losing subs rapidly .If anything they would dump every penny they have in their last big franchise which is lord of the rings.

It was another poor attempt at humor by the original poster.  Please read the entire post before posting and you will see it was quickly debunked.

I did not read all the way through this thread but would just like to say that that is the truest comment i've seen all day... for any company.

MMOs are getting worse not better.

Games like Vanguard are going to bring back all the good that was the old school MMOs
