To start with, at first when I heard about Vanguard, I was interested. Checked out the website, bla bla bla...My excitement faded over time though. That is until E3. I cover E3 for a website (www.nvnews.net). I initially intended to just get a quick vid of Vanguard gameplay. I ended up being so impressed with the way Vanguard has come along (especially since last years E3) that I ended up taking quite a bit of video (wich most of you may have seen already, but for those who havn't : http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=70119) Bottom line is, IMO Vanguard had a very good E3 showing. I spoke with Brad about the SOE thing, and he was very adamant in saying that it was best for the game, and he had made a promise to the community to always do what was best for the game. Several other Sigil Employees echoed this response. As for as being unpolished currently (animations, etc) they still havn't put the new animations into the game, and in fact have just finished motion cap...I'm not particarlly fond of SOE either (ruined Galaxies IMO), but it seems it will be ok for Vanguard, especiall since they are CO-Publishing with Sigil. Brad said they have absolutely no say over gameplay, graphics, etc. They ONLY thing they will be doing is Customer Service (dang it...lol), servers (sweet), and billing...The biggest thing I came away from E3 with regarding Vanguard is everyone that is involved in the game is infinetly passionate about it. I have never chatted with Devs/Employees that were so "into" thier game...It was astonishing to be quite honest...

Fantastic. So you take the word of some schmo you never met over the review from a reputable online site? Glad to see where you stand before I put any stock into anything you ever say again.
Well, personally I take what an E3 attendee says more to heart than some long-winded preview from a gaming website... I think you are over-emphasizing the importance of a full-blown review... First impressions mean everything, MxO sucked at the loading bar, and it appears VSoH leaves something to be desired from the get go as well...
You mean to tell me that you would take a website's (who rely on advert dollars from game companies) over a non-biased E3 attendee? If so, I think you need to reprioritize your sources for information...
And we know that they are a "non-biased E3 attendee" how? Hmm... o.k.
Everyone has a bias. With some it's a lot more obvious than others, but to try and say that ALL the negative reviews are un-biased and that ALL the positive reviews are biased is going a bit beyond sound judgement.
I'd say there are some on both sides that are accurate depictions of what they saw. So, that fits pretty well with what we know of the state of the game and the gamer that Vanguard is marketing towards. It's not a finished product, some of the reviews reflect that. It's not a game that everyone will like, some of the reviews reflect that. What's wrong with that? Even the Devs are fine with that.
That is excellent that AoC is "radically" different. It doesn't seem appealing to me, especially the "different parts". The thing is, the bad reviews mostly say that Vanguard isn't doing anything extrordinary. It's got the basic features that were tried and tested in other games, with only minor tweaks. That's cool...because, you know what....alot of people LOVED those features, ant to me...it's a real break to see all of them in one MMO. You have to understand, that there is some risk (for the player) on these radically different games. You may not like it, it may not flow...and to tell you the truth, I'm usually far more skeptical about "different" games than I am cookie cutter games...and from what I can tell, Vanguard has all my favorite cookies for one low low price.

No - but I take anything with I read from these so called reputable sites with a grain of salt seeing how many glowing previews get done on games that are complete dogs, or games I dont like.
So I either play the demo before I buy, or its a game I have followed for awhile and know I will like.
So I ignore the ravings of fan-bois and haters on forums and make my own opinion on things I have read/seen from a wide variety of sources before deciding whether to buy a game or not.
As for reviews - reviews after the game is released are worth a lot more than previews of a game in beta testing.
I think worst are the people who come to forums and flame a game after they bought it without doing any research into a game at all to see if they would like it.
Actually worst are the people who pirate the game and play the entire thing to decide if they will like it, then dont buy it as they have finished the game.

demos and free trials are the best choice for an opinion

I couldn't agree more on this. I play L2 and the amount of whinners who blast the game because there is open PvP is truely amazing. I want to ask them "did you read the box or just look at the pretty picture?"

pirates just suck, hey thanks for making all this anti piracey software in all the games I buy necessary. More time and energy taken from devs who could be making even better games.
Reviews and previews are just opinions. If you read enough you will see common patterns in the opinions and it will HELP you make a solid decission. They are not there to make the buying decission for you. So, take it all with a grain of salt because it just one guys opinion......the writers. Unfortunately I fell for the hype of the previews for D&DO the "game that will change everything" and ignored the forums (who basically said the game sucked) First and last time I do that.

How will I ever go on?
