I too tried SWG again yesterday but I have a very different persepctive my experiance. First I tried playing as my lvl 80 MBH who had been inactive for about 8 months now... I found myself very frustrated by EVERYTHING and the feeling that I had no clue how to play the game. Because of this feeling I resolved that I new game (because really that's what the NGE is) deserves a new start. I had to learn to play the new game in order to give it a fair review.
I had played the trial previously so I breezed through the tutorial station and made it to the ground. Obviously we all know about the combat changes, how you have to target your enemy and hold down a mouse button. Sure this is different but once you get used to it it's not as aweful as people make it out to be. I remember PreCU locking my target and selecting specials while circle strafing my opponent. Didn't have to worry about the cursor or really much of anything. It was kind of boring to be honest, and so is NGE combat to be honest but at least it's a little more engaging.
I have to say that the legacy quest series is in my opinion very well executed and leveling thus far has been a breeze. Sure it's a little tedious at times with the "go here kill this" but what game doesn't have those quests? It's a nice change form standing just outside theed and grinding on nunas and butterflies all day.
Graphics are mostly the same except for the added particle effects which are kind of "blah" but important so that you know what special you just fired off so you can better estimate the downtime till your next special. Othewise SWG runs exactly the same now as it did pre CU so I'm not sure why the other reviewer had to spend 30 minutes tweaking his settings... seems fishy.
Downsides to NGE are obvious, the diverse crafting is gone and that's tragic - I miss shopping for weapons and armor, so far all the stuff I'm using is looted or quest rewards which is kinda "ehh" in my opinion. The lack of dozens of people running around is also sad but on Bria where I am the old guilds are still operating fairly well.
Overall you will HATE the NGE if you try to compare it to Pre CU SWG but if you look at it as a new game which it's deffinately tolerable. They failed at the star warsy and iconic crap but I still feel like I'm playing old SWG for the most part (with the expection of the combat) so that's good enough for me for now.
Ultimately what I'm trying to get across is that you need to make up your own minds, not rely on somebody else's words because obviously different people have different perspectives on the same game. Do I like Pre CU better? Hell yeah but for now NGE is really the only MMO that comes close to matching my tastes... I'd encourage you all to try it out again and start a new character because learning the game from scratch is much easier then trying to figure out what you're doing at a lvl 80 vet character comming back to check things out.
Make up your own minds people.
EDIT: oh I forgot to add... I dont see how you even need all 12 of your toolbar slots for abilities. as a lvl 80 MBH I think there were 5 top tier skills and the rest of the attack commands were lower level variations of those that you dont even need to bother with. Also the old UI toolbar only had 12 slots, only different is that you could pull out 2 rows. The other poster is splitting hairs with that argument.

I agree, to decide if you want to play this game, it ultimately comes down to checking it out for yourself. I hope you continue to enjoy the NGE.
I encourage people to stop trying SWG out until the developers have stated that they are done with changing the CORE GAMEPLAY mechanics like class expertise systems, combat, and the Galactic Civil War. All you are doing is being used as beta testers but you are paying for the honor to beta test the game. Every time a company see that it can get people to pay to beta test their games, it will lead to even more incomplete launches and bug filled publishes.

Why would I even bother with a game that the reviewer admits is just "...tolerable..." !
And for $15 a month???
No. SOE and SWG went into the trash a long time ago.
Would not bother with it even if it were free. Why would I want to play a just 'tolerable' game, even if it was free.
Let it go.
You just have to hope SOE wont make a new NGE/CU or something else that throws away the things you've learned or remove the profession you are playing.
I would never support a company that treats it's customers in the way SOE did. If you can accept such behaviour then good luck with SWG in the future.
Circle of life baby!
Seriously, your post history makes it sound like positive attitudes and contributions never existed pre AND post CU. They sure did exist, I can assure you -- I was among them.

I absolutely agree! No one should base their judgement upon any semi biased view; regardless of mine or the OP's.
I was shocked when a few guildies had this same comment last night. "Why do you need more then 12?" It took me about 15 minutes to explain why and they immediately concured that what I had expressed would make the game play feel more immersive.
Using Jedi as the only example I can give:
Offense buff x1 / Deffense buff x1 / Heal x1/ food x3 / cloaking ability x1/ attacks x2 / buff devices x? / vehilce / clothing / weapons
The above example you can see a brief explanation to how a tool bar can be utilized and is an example of what I used even though I had to constantly fiddle with the avialble icons on the tool bar to facilitate my game play. Pre-nge I had 5 double tool bars _ALL_ with predetermined functions and were constantly filled. Do you know my character on Bria? If so chances are you either hate me or admire my success. I never performed fightclubs and never ran in large packs yet I was almost always able to be found overt/special forces solo while possessing a PvP ranking over 1800+ and rarely, if ever, dropping below 1700. I would not have been able to play with the same intensity if I were limited to a single double pained tool bar let alone one with 12 slots.
The op is semi hypocritcal in their acusation. They are saying to establish your own opinion although while presenting a biased and semi atack towards my integrity and questioning the cuase why someone would want a greater ability to manage their ingame features as they presently reside in "12 slots only". Even then the op continues with an overly opinionated view that due to me having to tweak out my graphics to get it comparibly close in appearance and frame rate to how I left the game, while expressing I changed gfx cards, that something is wrong with me.
I did not say "omg it suks!!" although I did point out some key areas which are effecting the quality of gameplay that is to be expected from a studio like SOE and a product with a Star Wars lable on it.
It seems you don't have such a diferent perspective after all. Saying a game is tolerable because you still feel a little like playing your old Star Wars Galaxies is not what the NGE was build for. So if this was a new game and you never played it before, tolerable while there are excelent alternatives on the market would have been a sales failure. Remember the NGE was developed not for us, but to draw a huge crowd of new players...
I understand both reviews points of view. On one hand i don't even use all the available slots for the reasons you specified, but then again my only item there is a stimpad. The crystal buff and other "so so" stuff i use from the inventory, don't realy need them. The graphics don't look good on Kashyyk on my 3D board either, and i have latest drivers. Had to tweek it a lot just to make it decent, and it's a Nvidia GeForce 6800GT, not top but not too shabby either.
Some elders might remain loyal to this, a few new players have joined, but all in all, NGE didn't hit the expected target. That, either fan or anti-NGE, nobody can deny. It doesn't have more players, therefore it failed.
6 millions joining the old star wars MMO something, sure....maybe.... if they do it ALL from scratch. Let's face it, we loved it but it shows it's age, doesn't look bad but it aint awsome anymore.
I have played other games that I wouldn't have even said was tolerable at the time, for free. I was beta testing them in the hopes of improving the game for when you had to pay for it. It was like donating my time, possibly in the hopes of getting my foot in the door to do game development (like a certain person called Thunderheart). Of course, the primary purpose behind beta testing is to get a product as close to finished as possible so that it will not turn away paying customers when it launches.
This is what I find the most discouraging about the NGE. SOE pushed out a product that was not complete, and likely won't be complete for at least a year after they pushed it out, and the only lesson they learned is that their gamers are willing to pay for their beta test. I don't care what Smed states, even if you are currently enjoying the NGE you are still beta testing the product. THE GAME IS STILL NOT FINISHED GOING THROUGH CHANGES TO ITS CORE SYSTEMS.
That's exactly the attitude they are expecting people to have. They shuv the new game down our mouths whether we like it or not. Love it or leave it is the attitude. That's awesome let me tell you.
No, I do not, and cannot be expected to go in and try this new game as if it's a new game altogether. To kill the old game, and substitute it by a completely new game under the same name is a total farce.
Have the same standards as you had for the old game when evaluating this current crap!
You said it yourself "you will HATE the NGE if you try to compare it to Pre CU SWG". How else would you evaluate it if you're a vet?
Even if you see it as a "new game", heck there's better games out there that outdo this one by a mile. they just don't have the sci-fi theme to it, but they sure aren't broken, and they sure don't play "weird".

Actually that is another huge detestable thing for me. Those toolbars were awesome. You could have 24 skills directly available at any time. Plus any other set of 24 more skills by scrolling up or down the bars. How can you not see this as being a huge decrease in gameplay versatility?

want your game back?
First off I really don't like the shooter style combat in an MMORPG, can't communicate while fighting in a group...secondly CH isn't back yet so reguardless of if it is better then when the NGE launched...it is still not a good MMORPG in my book.
You have two options, try to make the best of a bad situation which does not neccesarily mean play SWG, or you can stew in your own self pity and uncontrolable hate. I can appreciate that you want a place to b&m but how long is it going to go for? This place would be much better served by remembering the awesome parts of PreNGE instead of all the unhealthy and overzealous negitivity.
I dislike how they went about changing the game and I believe that they should have attempted in earnest to fix the old system. That said SWG even in it's NGE state is the only MMO I can tolerate hence the use of the word "tolerable".
Again I never said that people should like the game which is what most of you appear to think I have. I'm actually happy to pay for a beta test as opposed to playing the same friggin fantasy game over and over, at least SWG has a sci-fi overlay. If you dont feel like I should do that fine but dont judge me for doing so, just accept that I have and move on.
Life and games are what you make of them, and all I said what that I encourage people to give the NGE a "solid" run in order to acquire the most informed position about the playability of the game for themselves - I dont ask that you like it. The fact of the matter is that SWG:NGE is a very playable game and one that a lot of you might have liked just as much as PreNGE if that is how SWG had been released.
Just make up your own minds about it, dont let what SoE did go, but try to focus on something besides anger and hatred, it's not healthy.

This is absurd.
If you like the game, fine. You're entitled and for the moment, you're getting your money's worth in entertainment value. Don't kid yourselves into thinking you'll be having so much fun half a year after the fact, since SOE/LA have demonstrated a pattern of extreme core mechanics changes at half year intervals. Prepare to be jeered by the next squad of suckers when your turn comes around.
If you hate the game, fine. You're entitled, as you had your game rudely taken from you while you were still paying for it and given to people who don't have the sense not to throw crap at you for being upset about the theft. But this doesn't entitle you to give a ration of less than friendly shit to people who are enjoying themselves without needing to attack you about it. Save that for the poo-flinging monkeys who are mocking you for liking the old game.
If you want to go back and see what they've done to the game, do it. Quit asking permission and forgiveness. Morbid curiousity is your perrogative and you never know if you might just have changed your mind. I haven't, much, but I'm not going to pretend that other people with different gaming styles aren't going to have different opinions about the matter. And frankly, who gives a crap if someone else doesn't approve of it? Not. Your. Problem. So quit asking for more grief than you're already going to get.
Yes, by all means, tell us how you really feel. But don't get so bigheaded that you for one second think that anyone is going to agree with you, no matter how you feel about it.
And quit with the dead horse crap. If the equine was so very deceased, it wouldn't still be kicking and showing signs of yet another drastic mutation. I'm afraid that you'll have to nuke THIS horse from orbit to be sure it's done.

You win at life for that, thats what ive been saying for fucking months. You can play or not play, and like it or not like it, but I cant stand it when somebody shoves it down whoevers throat that they shouldnt be doing one or the other because of X reason.
Yea I think the continuation of post up here agree with that, but I still think it symbolizes what these people are doing. Things arent going to change back to the way they were and thats that.

Sorry, while I don't have a problem if you like the NGE (to each his own), seeing that you don't mind paying to beta test SWG does upset me. I already gave my reasons above, so I have to assume that you don't mind if companies release unfinished games.
I hope you know that computer games already have a notorious reputation for incomplete launches. This started occuring as the patches became prevalent for internet downloads. Companies realized that they could rush their games to meet certain deadlines (holiday sales) and then worry about completing the games later. The computer gamers just bent over and took it, instead of complaining to the companies.
Can anyone think of a single computer game that doesn't have a patch released to fix bugs (non-MMO games) come out after its launch? How many MMO game launches goes smoothly?
Every time we let companies crap on us like this, it just gives them more incentive to do it again.

well I guess I can give in to the masses and get xfire.. rerolling on different servers is better then running solo without even anyone to chat with most of the time .
PS for those that say get new friends.. I say I DID and guess what of the 51 names on the list I built in the last month or so there are rarely more then 3 or 4 logged in at any time .
