It's been said that in a democracy people deserve the leaders they elect. The same could be said of games like Mourning or D&L. Until gamers excersice some restraint, do some research, and demand at least a semi-polished game for their money, there will always be people who are happy to deliver shoddy product. They're getting paid anyhow, and they know there are suckers out there who will pre-order and stay subscribed based on pie-in-the-sky promises.

Do I think the developers of D&L are, at heart, bad people? I have no idea. Maybe they are genuine in their desire to make a solid game. Maybe they are hucksters. One has to look at the delivered product though. If it quacks like a duck and walks like a duck, don't be surprised when you step in duck crap.

Games like this are bad for the industry. There are many people who knew no better, who's first exposure to an MMORPG will be D&L, and will not venture into the genre again for a long time. Their gaming dollars could have gone to supporting a genuine publishing house, and that's the real shame.

what so funny is you can look at this website and see at least 2 other games with extreme amounts of hype that are going down the same path.

Personally, I think Darkfall is going to fall into this same situation when/if it ever comes out.  However, I dont think it has as many fanatics as either Mourning did or D&L because of the length of time it has been on the back burner. If it werent for Vanguard going with SOE I would have put that game in the same category.  I think the move they made is actually for the better compared to what they had before with MS.

D&L is probably the largest let-down of a game I have witnessed yet.  If anything, maybe gamers will become more wiser when they look to upcoming games and lower their expectations some. (is that a good thing?)

um, thats exactly the opposite of what most of us wish. Lowering the expectations of the players is exactly what NOT to do. There are a few games out there that have already raised the bar.Anything less, the consumer should send a signal loud and clear from this train wreck that players just arent gonna buy the bs and messy games. This is a big industry with the potential to make bi bucks. Competition is high. Its tough. You gotta be able to swim with the big fish, not lay about in the wading pool catching minnows and call it deep sea fishing. Hopefully the only good to come out of DNL Farlan/NP3/AD is that it does send a message loud and clear that players wont put up with train wrecks disguised as a "game'..cant even call this a game yet , its wrecked

Yeh I would say this is a classic example for our young "aspiring AND student in Game Development" of what NOT to do when developing a game. Has all the right touches -- misspelt words, meaningless loot, meaningless combat, meaningless names, empty buildings, messed up mobs, funky graphics, 5yr old made UI, lifted EULA, gestapo mods, mods-who-are-devs-who-are-fanbois, a pile of crap laid for a pile of crap game..and directions to the nearest metal grinder for the wreckage.

Just wait till Vanguard hits. If the early beta leaks are correct it will be a bigger train wreck then DnL. Think about the numbers..... over 8000 people invited to beta, never more then about a hundred on because the game is "boring and not fun". Where have we seen this before?? Think, think.......

Vanguard is in the middle of a transition for sure. I wouldnt say the game is "boring", it is only in Beta Stage 2 after all but right now thier problems seem to be mostly within the beta forum community. Reminding us all of the community within DNL. If you talk to a few serious testers (off the record of course) the beta is okay, its the community within that is exploding. Several have not gone back simply due to the treatments on the beta forum boards, nothing actually with the game nor game mechanics at all. (off the record of course).

I will say however that certain other games, still in Beta stages , are far more advanced and cohesive than DNL is at the present time. Many many months of niggling things will pester DNL while they attempt to fix the major flaws.
