"Jump" is an emote

MikeMongerMikeMonger Member Posts: 196

And that right there is the reason why this game will never climb into the highest MMORPG ranks again.

The engine was outdated when it came out.  It's even more outdated now.  Instead of modernizing things, they simply slap a new coat of paint onto a crumbling, delapidated structure.  Then they call it "all new".

SOE is, well, stupid.  They're trying to attract the B-net kiddies with a pseudo-FPS style of gameplay.  But all of the modern FPS games have things like real world physics.  The only thing they're doing is insuring that the bad word of mouth spreads to a whole new subset of players.

If SOE really wanted to "save" this game, they'd just leave it as is while their vast SWG dev team (they claim SWG has the single largest team of any of their games) goes in and reskins EQ2.

That is all.

"Jump" is more useful in a FPS and not for MMO's.

Pub 30 is meant to introduce Jump as a proper move (ie, you actually jump over stuff).

Not in the newer ones.  Jump is a viable, and ofen necessary movement.

Good.  Then all they need to introduce is fall damage, and logical physics (i.e.  no more running up and down the cliffs near Theed).

No. The entire reason for the CU and the NGE was to make it "older" , SWG was ahead of its time not outdated... The system was to complicated for them to maintain so they turned it into a simple level system from a skill based system.

Dunno if I can agree here.

The database backend of the game was high tech, sure. As were character models.

But the actual "playing field" was indeed outdated by Dark Age of Camelot, Asheron's Call, and even EverQuest. All of which had significantly more robust 3d environments (even if the graphics were still "below" SWG par) with full interactivity than SWG did. I mean, how long did it take SOE to fix shooting through cliffs?

I just cant honestly see them being able to implement a real collision system.  I would bet they make it in instanced pvp/pve zones.  The lag/loading that this game still suffers from will make any attempts at being a real fps game a sham.

If I believed they could really do it I might give it a go.  I just know that the way the game works with loading where you stutter stop for 3-10 seconds as the world loads that it will just never be a viable option.  Its just too laggy for fps gaming.

Cant you still do that? Also they never did fix sitting in chairs...they just completely removed the feature.

Then what the hell was all that talk up here awhile ago about them removing the feature? Lol. Whatever, Ill believe you since you actually still play, unlike 99% of the people up here including me.

The engine was never outdated, and it still isn't.

It's severly overengineered. The design they used is all nice and well for a virtual world. But all it ended up being used as, was static spawn camping.

Essentially the same engine is used for both ground and space combat, multi-player ships, dungeons, and building interiors. It was designed to be scalable and robust, and in many cases it has proven that.

    There's just a tiny problem - players.

    Players only wanted a game.

They were talking about how for several months the ability to sit in chairs and such in the cantinas and starports was broken, that eventually got fixed, and it seems that shooting through hills has also finally been fixed.

    This is true.

SOE has a practice where they contract new hires for 6 months then let them go.  They had retained some members although it's known as a "revolving door" studio.  SOE felt it was a liability to train new hires on their code and being that those who knew it best had left and they had few options other then to rewrite the code to allow their potenital developers an easier learning curve.  The intent on paper is to permit more time on coding then learning their code.

I'm honestly amazed that the game play feel remains to feel pointless and lackluster after 6 months of the "Enhancements".

More rumors are saying this game is getting closed down for the PC servers and is getting a direct port to the 3rd gen consoles with an enhanced version of what is currently experianced in the live game.  Something about being able to play a 1player or multiplayer version depending upon the individuals wishes.

Man, I still can't believe how bad SOE has made this game. Has there ever been another gaming studio that has done an equally bad job with a title?

There's a different between "system" and "engine".

The "system" is how things operate.  Skill based system, crafting system, combat system, etc.

The "engine" is what underlies the various systems of a game...it's what makes everything go.

The engine for SWG only recognizes two dimensions.  That's why jump is just an emote, you can run up and down Theed waterfall, you never take falling damage, etc.  SWG does not recognize height differences.

ALL modern MMORPG's, and a few of the one less modern ones, recognize three dimensions.  Jump is an actual movement, you can't run straight up sheer surfaces, if you fall you take damage, etc.

Because SWG can't recognize the third dimension, it's physics are very basic.

Even at the time SWG came out, you had games with much more advanced physics.

The ground game only recognizes 2 dimensions.  The space game recognizes 3.

The two are most definately NOT the same engine.

If the two were the same engine, jump would have been a viable move (instead of an emote) from day 1, and you would have fallen to your death trying to run down Theed waterfall.

This shows you do not play the game . The chair issue was fixed like 3 hotfixes ago . You can sit in any chair again . They never removed it , There was a bug not allowing you to do so in Star ports or cantinas but in player housing /halls you still could .

If they are indeed different, Publish 30 will probably involve the merging of the two, since Jumping (and apparantly climbing) are being added in as proper actions.

Congrats smartass, I dont play the game. Never claimed I do play right now. If you bothered to read beyond something you could correct you would have seen that. I was going by what I had seen up here awhile back ago, so I had just forgotten all the details. Get back to me when I give a damn.
