Sick of all MMORPG's

KageKage Member Posts: 2
Is anyone else tired of all the same old MMORPG's? They are all mostly the same with just a different coat of paint.

My ideal MMORPG would be a game where you run around like a third person shooter, and when you go into combat it goes to a side view and acts as a fighter game. You could switch between who you're attacking by hitting *insert button here* so in that sense it would be a bit like def jam. As vague as I've been I'd like to see if anyone else would like the same thing. The only thing that would be hard is to keep the lag down because of the constant input from someone so the areas where players can interact would have to be small (compared to MMO's)

The MMO concept was great about 8+ years ago when it was still a rather new idea and everything being put out was fresh on the canvas.  But nowadays the new mmo's are just knock-off's of the old ones with different graphics and a few changes here and there.

I had high hopes for D&D Online., but that ship sailed once I realized everything was instanced.

I keep hoping for some company to break mold and do something really innovative with the MMO concept. But almost every truly new concept that gets announced is cancled before launch. And those that survive get so white washed by the expectations of the Hardcore MMO crowd that they end up being little more than EQ clones anyway...

    *sigh*

the real problem is not that new games are borrowing from old games, it's that they are borrowing the wrong stuff. Every new game that comes out from a big publisher is getting easier and easier. MMORPGs were designed (at least IMO) to appeal to old pen and paper D&D types.  I bet 90% of the MMORPG players today don't even know what a 20 sided die is.  They play WoW like they played Super Mario Bros. People need to get back to the realization that MMORPGs can't be won. They can only be played

Maybe, but if you give folks the idea that it can't be won, many of them won't even play it to begin with. That old three word chestnut pops up again: lowest common denominator.

Well its true that this generation of gamers probably doesnt know anything about what D&D was like back in my day.  But unfortunately you come to a realization that its like comparing apples to oranges.  In reality technology can't begin to be able to illistrate what an imagination with no hardware limits can do.

Besides in order to draw in a larger a audience the dev's dumb the games down and make them more hack and slash which is an easier style of gameplay.  Hence the **Huge success of games like Diablo.

Honestly I felt like Turbine was really on to something when they created Asherons Call.  The spells took alot more work.  You couldnt just spend some cash and buy a spell., you had to actually create the spell from scratch and then maintain it with the use of regeants not to mention getting your skill up so it wouldnt fizzle.  Ofcoarse the lamers created hacks to get around it but the point is it was a step in the right direction.

Additionally they implemented a great guild system.  Having a patron., someone to look for to advice and help was great.  And they were glad to be a patron because they gained experience from the people they helped going all the way up the chain of command.

Its really too bad Turbine pretty much quit being innovative after that.   I dont think AC2 which I beta tested and played even deserves being mentioned here.

Yep after trying a few Betas I just can't work that excitement up as its the same tired old thing. I'm not sure if I'll ever really get into a mmorpg again.

Oh how I wish I could get my game concept into the hands of a developer.  The demand for something new is out there and this would be a game people would play until the cows came home.

Thats in interesting thought, what if you could make a MMO sort of like Guild Wars, but add in a difficulty meter.

Although you could not just add in a 1 - 10 meter and just have it scale up the mobs and reduce your damage, I don't know why, but I don't like that idea. I want something fresh, but where a player can change the difficulty to their liking(ie small group of players on voice comm could really compete at the highest level, but a solo player could also complete tasks).

To me it's simple.  To get true enjoyment out of a game, I need a worthwhile challenge.  Like anything in life, you feel better about what is hard earned rather than spoonfed.  You may say, it's just a GAME...but so is Super Mario Bros. and do you want it to have the same fun value and retention as that?
