A returing soldier

A while back (more than a year ago) I tried out this game. Played it for a couple of weeks, but dropped out in the first month. While I liked the setting and the realism. I just didn't have enough time to spend on this game.

Today I returned to the game. I jumped into the game and got into some serious fighting near maaseik. After an hour or so. I said to myself, why did I ever leave this game? In this one hour I got more fun out of the game than that whole first month a year ago.

I don't know why, but the game seems more accessible now. Graphics seem a tad brushed up and the new UI is much better than the one I played with a year ago.

Just a quick question. Is it normal that you is killed time and again. I've got a k/d of about 0.2 as infantryman.

Ingame name is Berthold btw

Yes, it's normal to get killed again and again.  Most people in the game are targets for those of us with a greater than 1 KD ratio. :)

But remember it's about winning the war and not getting stacks of kills.

I'm a seasoned gamer, but are there some things you should know while playing infantry in ww2ol. Just to increase my survivability.

I noticed yesterday that teammembers don't show names when far away (still can see them on map). Was killed a couple of times, while hesitating to shoot. Not knowing what I was aiming at. How do peaple distinguish friend from foe at that range?

And how do cap points work? If I capture a part of town, can I spwan there? If so, how?

Caps are possible if "the tables are up".  (many prerequisites for that, main one=Attack Objective should be up, or the city should be owned by your side).  You cap a facility if you touch the table for one minute.  Timer resets when firing, so bring friends to cover your arse.

    A. You can spawn from any facility that is owned by your side if:

    1. A friendly brigade is garrisoned in the town/city (=CP=Choke Point) where the spawnpoint (depot, army base, airfield or naval docks) is located.
    2. The spawnpoint is in supply (link to brigade).
    3. The spawnlist isn't depleted.
    4. There is a mission posted there. (if you have the rank, you can create one yourself)

Note: To spawn at Forward Bases (FB's), points 2, 3 and 4 suffice.

    B. You can spawn from a Mobile Spawn Point if:

    1. It is from a member of the mission you're on.
    2. It's deployed.

Spawning=select mission, select "weapon", press "enter world".

As a new player you are at a single disadvantage, us veterans have binoculars (zero key on keyboard to access them), as a new player you do not gain this advantage (I disagree with it personally).

The fastest way to gain rank is through defensive missions, allow the enemy to come to you.  Watch the Target channel chat (Blue icons).  If you keep your eye on that you can look at the map to get an idea where the enemy are attacking from, when you get a kill, hide somewhere so that you can despawn out to get an RTB (Return To Base), that will give you 100% of the rank from the kill.  You can get 90% rank if you get an RES (Rescue), if you die (KIA) you only get 50% of the rank for any kills that got so it is always wise to get an RTB/RES as a new player to maximise your rank gain.

The only way to distinguish the enemy at distance is to recognise the different clothing that they wear.

This site has some screenshots of the varying infantry articles worn by the enemy.  Keep your head down and watch your local surroundings, players have a tendancy to do silly things, like running across open fields, mobile spawn points will attract enemy infantry players, they want to kill these tanks to slow the attack down, so defending one that is close to town may yield you some good kills (however you will not be able to get an RTB from the MSP (Mobile Spawn Point).

Best advice?  Find a squad in your timezone that has good numbers and join them.  We're talking an abundance of players who want to help you to be better, because you playing improves the game for everyone.

do you actually need to kill someone to get rank?  i remember whne i lived you only had to stay alive for i think 15 min and then rtb on defense missions.

Staying alive for 10 minutes and then returning to base, no longer yield rank points.

Killing targets obviously does.  But manning a MSP yields points (depending on how many people spawn from your msp).  Placing satchel charges on firebases or repairing bridges also yield points.  In the strategic bomber war, hitting enemy factories also yields points.

    Forget all the advices here.

    Here's what you do:

Find a squad with good and funny people and join them. Do your job with the squad and rank and skills will come to you as you're surrounded by supportive players.
