Looking Forward to Hero's Journey....

SorcerousKhanSorcerousKhan Member UncommonPosts: 164
I have to say that, of all the up-and-coming MMORPGs, Hero's Journey is looking to be the game to beat for 2007. The Wyr system, seamless updates, brilliant character customization, and seamless updates all bode very well. Is anyone else looking to get on board when this game hits retail?

While it's wise to be sceptical of any MMORPG pre-launch, Heroe's Journey is indeed one that I'm allowing some rays of Fanboism to shine into my dark, dark heart. (The others being Chronicles of Spellborn and Gods and Heroes).

It has a publisher with a proven track record, frequent and updated media, and ongoing, professional communication with the developers. With those three aces in it's hand one can get a little excited at the prospects. I especially like it's character development and can't wait to get my hands on it. If they have an open beta or some way of testing the quality beforehand I may even pre-order if I like what I see.

I used to be much more enthusiastic about Heros Journey.  However, the heavy instancing and now the long delay have put me off a bit.

By the time HJ releases, I may be totally immersed in Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, or possbly Fallen Earth.

If there is one thing I'd like to see less of in mmorpgs, it is instancing.  A few instances here and there, especially to advance storylines and makes some quests specific to you and your group I am fine with, but a mmo based on instances isn't something I will try anymore.  I need a huge, seamless world to be able to explore and move around in.

With all that said, I am still counting on HJ to be the roleplayers mmorpg, and will check it out when it comes, but I can't say for sure if it will be for me yet, as I am looking for a mmorpg with vast landscapes and huge gameworld (with only limited instancing).

I've been watching this one for a few months now, and I agree that, with the decade+ background in MUDs of its developers, it seems to be bringing more of a community-based approach to its design. That's a good thing.

On the other hand, it appears that it will be yet another game focused on fantasy combat, uses classes instead of skills, and enforces the old tank/nuker/healer+aggro model of "things to do in the game." And that's disappointing.

But on balance, it may prove that Hero's Journey has the right mix of old and new to be popular. Worth watching....

You got me intrested in HJ with the instantcing and lost it again with the roleplayers

Well, while I followed development and participated in the Heroes Council for the game, I learned that the game is being created with roleplayers in mind and will offer an immersive setting with lots of lore and roleplaying opportunity.  Unfortunately for me, I don't know how this will be done well when there will be instances separating the community in many cases, but the fact that Simutronics is keeping the roleplayers in mind when making the game made Heros Journey a must try mmo.  Who knows, after I try it, it may very well be just as immersive and fun as a mmorpg with a seamless, huge gameworld.

About your comment regarding roleplaying, the game is being made so that roleplayers will enjoy it, but I doubt it will turn off ordinary players who have various playstyles.  If you don't like to roleplay, I'm sure there will be plenty of other stuff for you to do.

From what I've seen, instancing isn't quite as core to the game as some people seem to think. There is common interaction, and a fair bit of it, too.

As for roleplaying....I'm not going to, and I know several HJ-followers who aren't going to either. We're more interested in all the action, and the variety of quests.

They have over 60 GMs. Quest content will be added to the game on almost a daily basis. Your choices have CONSEQUENCES - depending on what you do for a quest, you might end up saving the princess and becoming a knight or killing the princess and becoming an outlaw (to use an example), affecting future quest options. It's a little like Fable on steroids.

The beta is scheduled for 3rd-4th quarter 2006; I can't remember which. I'm going to preorder, heh.

I am definetly looking more forward to it then Vanguard.  Hero's Journey just looks stunning, almost like Oblivion.  Pretty sure its going to be instanced in alot of places; but that helps with roleplaying games as you don't lose the roleplay factor with 500 other people doing the same stuff.  Depending on how good its combat system is; I will probably play the game for a while.

But its gonna have some stiff competition like Age of Conan.

Vanguard has no instancing in it whatsoever.

I actuelly like a good storyline and imersion in a game. I just don't trust alot of roleplayers after the last game I was in but possibley I was just unlucky with what passed for a roleplay community in that game.

    Roleplay-

    don't like it?

I'm not sure what passes for roleplaying in every game out there but from playing gemstone and dragonrealms (both games from the same company making heros journey)  its a world not mired in "hail, well met".  now you'll see that but only from amateur roleplayers, this is some of what i think you may be seeing on supposed "roleplay" servers.  real roleplay is the sort that comes from a gamer who becomes the character and doesn't simply push the television fantasy model but creates one of their own.  roleplaying yourself is roleplay, its keeping OOC content to a minimum and letting the gameworld persist as your only world... for a while anyway.  HJ is going to be flooded with people from their MUDDs especially on the hardcore roleplay server.  i think anyone would be pleasently surprised with the personalities that will be discovered.

    Instancing-

    Not immersive?

Neither is camping a spot for hours and waiting for a massive item drop or a major enemy to appear only to have some other passing group descend and steal your oppuratunity... not just once, but often.  your enemies run off shouting "hahaha Newbz" into the sunset.  if you read the information and lore on instancing in HJ then you would know its a huge expansive open world dotted with instanced dungeons and quests and open dungeons and quests.  the quests and dungeons fit the situation... obviously if its a dungeon that spawns an undead king whos soul aches to be releived of its curse and you and your freinds travel down into the bowels of hell to do so... it just doesnt make any sense at all to have such a one time event like quest open and respawn over and over... instance it, make it scale to your group, utilizing the skills and varying levels of everyone in the group... have it be highly detailed and immersive, unseceptable to the lag around the dungeon, things that are impossible in open quests and dungeons... sound great?  a bit different?  maybe impossible?  well thats what they are doing with instances and this is what people need to know instead of wincing at the term.  they never said it was all instanced, in fact its said that there will be open quests and dungeons along with huge common areas and hunting grounds.  the landscapes in HJ are vast... and the shots are some of the best ive ever witnessed concerning vegetation, flora and fauna.  it really doesnt matter how much more massive some other games world is, the fact is the attention to detail is more important on large landscapes then sparsely planned and loosely thrown together huge landscapes.

Im looking forward to HJ (hard to tell >:]  ) for so many reasons... i like the Wyr system and how the game moves away from the loot centric ideals of so many other games.  i like how you can look how you want to look reguardless of power.  if i want to look uber powerfull i can do so AT ANY TIME, if i want to look weak and old despite my insane strength or magical ability, i have the OPTION!  i like the Journey system where you can fail quests and how you complete them effects quests further down the line.  i like the creativity from the DEV team on ideas like the nemesis system where (as i understand it) the first creature who escapes you while harming you badly becomes your nemesis throughout the game.  i like how the quests scale to your group and lower level people wont be useless to you and your party... everyone can play together reguardless.  The apprentice master system is also great for people who wish to get a buff by helping others and younger folk can get help figuring things out, another system that fosters community.  i like how some of the NPC's in the wild make sense like the fairies who rebuild sundered parts of the forest. that make me feel like the world is alive.  i love the depth of the charaacter generator, its rediculously complex.  i like the simutronics has a ton of experience in this field and built their own software for it and made it so they can stream, add and remove content instantly, and not just tiny parcels of information but major gameplay functions.  i like how they have an army of GM's, ive played their other games and have experienced how it works, and have loved every minute of it.  i think thier motto of "more fun, less tedium" should have been the motto of every company, all along.

and i dont care that this is another fantasy game that seems to follow the main model of MMO, IMO they are going to finally make the game that many of us have been waiting for, where roleplaying is actually an enjoyable experience for everyone and not just a shadow of a word in a forgotten acronym that describes the game your playing.

    Be one with it.

In SWG it seemed to mostly be 'looking for sex slave!'

It was like that in Second Life too.

Niice response.  I didn't know about the Nemesis system, that sounds like fun "Darn you lvl 1 Rats"
