I know this isn't SWG.. but it is just as important to everyone here, maybe even MORE so, so...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just plain insulting.

You know what? The new-old versions of the original trilogy soon to be released is...

1. NOT anamorphic widescreen.. just a letterboxed transfer of the laserdisk. Won't look any better AT ALL.

2. NOT in THX.. only STEREO. 2 channel stereo.

3. The original cuts are really the "Bonus disk" to yet another set of the same disks we already have.

So they make the big deal about finally releasing it, yet they
INTENTIONALLY spend ZERO resources to make it WORTH having on DVD.

Basically it is the SAME DVD that you all can get from looking on the web for a "Laserdisk to DVD transfer". Hell.. I think the DVD I have is 7
channed stereo.

Save your cash. Spread the word.

Thanks for the info.  Not to worry though.  Since the NGE I don't buy anything Star Wars related.

Thats too bad, I was hoping to get the original trilology (without the stupid "edits" that Lucas did to the movies)  on dvd.

    Oh well.

I did too. I wanted them WORTH it too. I already have the laserdisk transfer, and it is nice.

There's a HUGE difference between watching a cropped disk and anamorphic widescreen, especially on HD.

And 2 channel stereo is PLAIN INSULTING. Lucas invented THX for frak's sake.

I just paid $40 for the DVD versions a little less than a year ago, I never even planned on buying them again, its bullshit. Just another example of Lucas whoring around the name. Why make new/different stuff when you can keep selling the same old shit for more and more money? That terminology applies to both LucasFilm and LucasArts.

    The  Lucasfilm form letter...

I wanted you to know how much we appreciate the passion and
enthusiasm you have for Star Wars, and thank you for sharing your
concerns about our upcoming DVD release.

The DVDs being released in September will contain two versions of
Star Wars: Episodes IV, V and VI – the Special Editions (which
represent George’s vision of the movies) and the first versions, which
will be included as bonus material. We hoped that releasing those
“original” movies on a bonus disc would be a way to have some
additional fun with the debut of the movies as individual DVDs. We
certainly did not want it to become a source of concern or frustration
    for any of our fans.

As you may know, an enormous amount of effort was put into digitally
restoring the negatives for the Special Editions. In one scene alone,
nearly 1 million pieces of dirt had to be removed, and the Special
Editions were created through a frame-by-frame digital restoration. The
negatives of the movies were permanently altered for the creation of
the Special Editions, and existing prints of the first versions are in
    poor condition.

So many fans have requested the original movies, we wanted to find a
way to bring them to you. But since these movies do not represent
George's artistic vision, we could not put the extraordinary time and
resources into this project as we did with the Special Editions. The
1993 Laserdisc masters represented the best source for providing the
original versions as DVD bonus material. Although these are
non-anamorphic versions, they do preserve the original widescreen
    composition of the movies.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans – now or in the future – to restore the earlier versions.

We hope you will understand our decision and, again, want to let you know how much we appreciate your interest and enthusiasm.

    Sincerely,

    Lynne Hale

    publicity@lucasfilm.com

So basically the BIG DEAL is that you can NOW buy the DVD's SEPRATELY instead of the cheaper boxed set... but here! A BONE! A lowsy original cut transfer.

That's a LUNATIC'S explanation. They all got together and thought "What will make these fanbois BUY this again for no good reason? Let's GIVE THEM WHAT THEY'VE BEEN DYING FOR! And let's make it SUCK.

I read more about it. If you play it on a widescreen HDTV... you get LETTERBOXED view. Box on the sides like you're watching normal TV, PLUS bottom and top bars! WOOOOHOOOOOOOO.

I don't see the big deal tbh , Why make such a big deal about everything Lucas and crew does ? Some people hate episode 1-3 , Now in order to buy the Original on DVD don't you have to buy 1-3? Atleast this way you can buy the movies you want singular rather than in a box set .

And as for HD and letter box and any other nonsense . WHO gives A **** ? They are saying they did not want to spend the time or resource restoring what was left of the original film , Oh Well buy it or don't either way none of this is important .

Oh wow you discovered Lucasfilm is a buisness and as capitalist as the next guy . Have a /cookie

Well yea all that is true, and I really dont care about the format the new released ones will be in, thats not what irks me. What does irk me is I just spent $40 on these same movies less than a year ago, and they are already releasing more of the same. I dont have the money to dump on the same movies every 6-8 months or whatever, with just different paint jobs.

I would rather have the VERY origional ones that will be comming out soon than the remastered special edition ones, as i dont care for the added scenes, the horrible mapping job on the TIEs, and the shitty Lightsaber colors, oh yea and the entire Jabba's palace mess. I dont give a damn about HD, progressive scan, surround sound and all that. Its nice and all but I dont need it, if youre gonna judge a movie on its sound and video format I think you should look elsewere, since you dont really care about StarWars.

I wish I had those. Im only 20 so I never had the chance to see them in theaters or anything, but ive been into StarWars my whole life basically. I got the THX mastered VHS trilogy that came out in the early 90s, that was the first time I saw the movies, I watched each one about 100 times, literally. I dont think RoTJ works anymore.

If i still had a VCR I would compare them. But I actually do think the THX VHS versions (NOT the special edition ones released in the mid-late 90s', but the ones released in the early 90s in the black and blue box, had Vader on "A New Hope" a Stormtrooper on "Empire Strikes Back" and Yoda on "Return of the Jedi") look better than the DVD versions, at least in the VHS ones you couldnt notice the mapping issues on the TIE's and the Lightsaber colors were true. Luke never had a green/white lightsaber.

Oh yes the VHS boxed set of the original trilogy. I still have that. Haven't watched them in a long time. (Usually I just fire up the DVDs.)

I should get those out and at least FF to the end and rewind them. Tapes are magnetic and there is no A/C in my apt, and if you let them sit too long they can stick and degrade. Heck, maybe I'll just watch them all... it's good movie watching!

I think however that the reasoning for their use of the laser-disk version for this new set is fine... I do think the new set is kind of lame in the sense that there already are DVD versions out. They keep re-packaging the old, the same way Disney does when they keep re-releasing things like Bambi and so on.

On the other hand, every 10 years or so there is a new batch of young'uns that hasn't seen the originals, and after all, these are timeless classics. It's not like most kids who haven't seen them in a few years, won't like SW!

Stupid edits? What are you mad? I thought that made it so much better. I always thought "these movies are good, but they really need a 5 minute musical number by computer graphics in a gibberish language." I think they're still too violent, maybe in a future remastering they can replace all the guns with cel phones!

Speaking of which, anyone know the name of the South Park episode where Raiders of the Lost Ark was remastered? I have this sudden desire to down... um... purchase it legally from my local electronics store.

Mackie.. you really don't know about DVD's and HDTV that much.

Even the lowliest film released on DVD allows for animorphic widescreen. It actually lets the widescreen fill the HDTV. It would have taken a PITTANCE for them to run it through animorphic rendering.. hell they could probably have a intern on the ranch do it.

But they're lying on the "we just took the transfer" bit from the lasers. The laserdisks had THX quality sound (the eqilivant at the time)... this disk had TWO channel stereo. I have the DVD rips of the laserdisks and it has better sound than 2 channel stereo.

They first marketed it as "What the old-school fan was dying for!" Now they don't even GIVE US A REASON to not use the freaking VHS tapes I still have.

The edits that I am refering to include Greedo shooting first and the kiss between Luke and Leia.  I do not know what other edits were made, do some research if you are that interested.

The South Park episode is "Free Hat." It's episode 9 from season 6.

Anyway, this is just like Lucasfilm. We all know George Lucas can't tell his hairy ass from an ewok anymore. His edits in the Special edition flat out suck. Han shot first, he was a cold blooded killer.. thats what made his heroic acts at the end of episode 4 so dramatic.

I own a widescreen HDTV. This is bad news, even if you don't have one. No anamorphic widescreen? What? They just crap on art. Like the South Park guys said in "Free Hat," what if the Beatles went back and updated the White Album every few years? Idiots.

I was super pissed off when the out-takes (deleted sceens) were not included in the last DVD set. Does anyone know if this new box will feature the out-takes from episodes 4-6?

I love George Lucas, but man, he has lost it.

It was flipping SELF DEFENSE. Greedo had a blaster AIMED straight at him telling him he's coming dead or alive.. and he might just take his ship... and I paraphraze...

Gredo :"I may even take your ship"
    Han: "Over my dead body"
Greedo: "Sounds like a good idea."

I thought Han even showed restraint. I'd have shot him first.. second.. third and maybe even did a little dance afterwards. "How ya like me NOW you green bitch???" probably wouldn't have gotten PG back then.

They first marketed it as "What the old-school fan was dying for!" Now they don't even GIVE US A REASON to not use the freaking VHS tapes I still have.

That might be because  the subject doesn't interest me what so ever . I hardly watch TV or Movies I would rather read or play music . And I still use VHS as my primary movie player . DVD is way to digital for me . Thanks for noticing though .

Want any VHS tapes? I'm selling all mine in the garage sale. Except for the original tapes of the trilogy... that may finally be our only record that Lucas was sane... once.

HAH believe me , My wife has enough VHS to open up her own blockbuster lol

Babe.. Just think of it. Get a DVD burner/VHS hookup and transfer all that to DVD. Now 100 tapes fit in a space the size of a 100 disk DVD spindle!

It might just double your living space!

I don't like it when you say things. - A Vanguard fan who does too.
