You are under the impression that the SoE haters are exremely numerous.This site is a meeting point of ex SWG players so you will see loads of "i will not play a SoE game " here.
Truth is we on this forum are a small minority or even a drop in the ocean of the millions who play mmorpg.
The typical gamer will buy a game if its well advertized and gets good reviews.
If major gaming magazines give vanguard a say 95% rating it will be flooded with customers no matter who makes or publishes the game.
Gone are the days when success depended on word of mouth alone,otherwise auto assault would not be sitting on low population servers.
do believe that SOE intends to take it over in the near future and make
the abysmal changes they are so well known for. Plus with this new
increase in "access" pricing SOE is implementing I am not going to pay
$20 something dollars to play a game.

Ignorance is bliss, I guess. Before I played SWG, I might have agreed with you.... But knowing what I do, your post makes me giggle. SOE haters are pretty numerous, and include a fair percentage of the people who have ever played their games. Sure, they don't piss off every customer they have, just more than any other game company I have dealt with.
Former SWG players aren't posting here because it's a cool place to attack SOE. For the most part the people posting anti-soe sentiments here, were posting here before the SOE deal was announced... and they were posting here because they were excited about the game. You're right though... it isn't a lot of people posting. That's because there were only ever about 20 people posting here regularly anyway. What I take from the state of this forum is that a lot of people who are "in the know" MMO players, and most present and former players of SOE games would rather see anyone but SOE publish this game.
As far as word of mouth not being a driving force in game sales... I think that may be true for console games, but it is less true for PC games... A person sitting at a PC has a plethora of information about any game at their finger tips. They aren't just going to take a TV commercial's word for it that a game is good. Beyond that, I think MMOs rely far more on word of mouth (read as internet "buzz") than they do on traditional advertising media to generate new players. The good news is, the people writing for gaming magazines and websites are generally gamers themselves. I think they can probably refer to the things they have written about other SOE games, SWG in particular, and factor the publishers past indiscretions in to their reviews.
But... that's not really relevant. This game will probably fail on it's own merit... before SOE has a chance to ruin it. I wouldn't even expect it to do as good as auto-assault. Speaking of auto-assault.... word around the campfire is that it sucks, so I don't really get the point you were trying to make about it.
I also have to agree with the person who asked why we are supposed to keep anti-soe sentiments in one thread, but the anti-anti-soe posts pop up all the time.
