    this is probably discussed everyday...

Character customization is pretty bad. Chances are by the time you actually start to get anywhere in the game you will look just like your group members.

In terms of ability to customize your character appearances, you basically have two layers:

1: appearances of your race - basically you choose one of the following, CHOOSE CAREFULLY because it will stay with you for as long as you play the game:

Humes - 8 different face models for male, 8 different face models for female

Elvaans - 8 different face models for male, 8 different face models for female

Tarutarus - 8 different face models for male, 8 different face models for female

Mithras - 8 different face models female alone

Galkas - 8 different face models male alone

2: appearances of your gear - 16 gear slots total, slots marked with * have impact on your appearances

     *Headpiece

      Neckpiece

     *Armpiece

     *Bodypiece

     *Legpiece

     *Feetpiece

     *Main weapon

     *Sub weapon

     Ranged weapon

     Ammo

     Back

     Waist

     Ring 1

     Ring 2

     Earring 1

     Earring 2

There are alot of gears to outfit your characters with, but cooler looking gears are only availiable at high levels.

Seems the rule of thumb is quality over quantity. I’ve played allot of mmos where I was never really into my toon to the point were I could actually kinda RP. I play a 75 Galka Dark Knight, coming up and getting full AF1 it was really rad, all tho I had to trade it in 5 lvls later for the RK set, which looked exactly like the RS set… except for the color was kinda meh. The RS set, which ive been using for a while (the scheme) is a great scheme. Frankly, I would rather have the RS.RK.Thick set then any set of armor I have ever had in any mmo. Keep in mind the E ABJ set is also RS but purple lol. Allot of us just don’t use 1 set, we tend to match AF,AF2,AF1+1,ABJ and JSE and at the end of it all, what you have is a very unique looking toon. Do I like the fact that my optical hat looks like a fungus hat? No, but I liked the model. I think I look like a final boss then a mmo toon. And I think that’s the goal, to climb that hard ladder, to be poor and earn your way to the top but to actually see something come from it. All the work I put , I got back… unlike ahem wow and eq2.

Theres allot of gear in CoP and ToU that really adds new flavor but all jobs have that “money” set, I think through the years asian made mmos have earned a reputation that they care more about actual models then they do of variety. I feel that compared to other non asian mmos IE WoW / EQ2 etc, SE has done a great job, in fact those two games I just mentioned cant hold a friggin candle to FFXI graphics… a game that’s more then 2 years older… go figure.

    Ranged weapon

Your ranged weapon is seen when you are actually *using* it, but not otherwise.

People who care about apperances have two sets of equipment, Their Casual set - What you wear when you're not in an Exp party, When you're by yourself or with some friends. And Their Party Set- This set Is what you use when you're in an exp party, It may be ugly but stats make up for it, At least for the few hours while you're in the party. Casual sets are not acceptable in Exp party use, Just becase somthing looks bad Doesn't mean you shouldn't use it, since your poor performance will hurt everyone in the party.

I would have to agree with the quality over quantity statement.

I just rapped up playing EQII. Although the graphics are nice and detailed and the customization was endless FOR FACES. EQII has a serious "clone effect" Almost all humaniod types have the same skeletal structure. (the cat guys, the lizard guys.....) so they all look the same from a distance. In addition, cloths all look the same no matter what race wears it. So a catguy (kara?) looks identicle as a human wearing the same robe. They even all have the same movement animations.

U.S. players tend to base how good "customization" is based on the face alone. They don't take into consideration that you very rarely actually see another players face up close.

I primarily play L2. The customization at character creation is about on par with FFXI as far as facial customization goes. However that where it ends. The same suit of armor looks completely different based on what race wears it. Also, skeletal structure is different for each race. Orcs have a unique physical build and are easily identifiable. Even Elves vs Humans is very easy to tell the difference, even at a distance. You can not say the same for EQII. The only way to tell the difference between and elf and Human is to look for pointy ears if you can even see them. In L2 each race and sex has its own set of movement animations. Making them even more unique. In EQII male/female most races all have the same movement animation making it even more difficult to tell characters apart. All of this is unlike games like EQII.

Vangard is going to do the same thing. The devs have stated that all models will have the same skeletal structure to keep up performance. So their cat guys will also be Humans with a "tiger" or "dog" head with identical movement animations.

For whatever reason may Asia games are much better at making unique looking character races. All in all, North American designed games are not all that good at letting you create a truely "unique" looking character. Faces only.

Its very easy to pick out who is who based on race, armor and movement animations in L2

However, L2 is HEAVILY critisized for its "lack" of customization.

FFXI also has some truely unique characters. They are not just humans with an animal head popped on. I always really liked the Tau Taru but your Elves have the strangest body builds

The ability to make your character look different is pretty terrible in this game. There is 5 races with 8 stock faces for each race/gender, with two colours of hair for each, so there is a good chance you'll be looking fairly similar without armor on to everyone of your own race.

Armor is bad in this manner also, as almost every job of the same level will look exactly alike, and at the eariler levels, almost every mage looks like the other mages, and every melee looks like the otheres. It gets a bit better later on, as then you'll start to look more like just your own job, instead of every other job of your type. Though for the most part, melee will be wearing the same type of chest peice, but what can you do.

The models really are nice though, with a good amount of detail, and some very nice designs. You may look just like everyone else, but you'll look spiffy doing it.

Have to agree at certain level people will go for the best equiptment for their job and end up everyone's appearence looks alike.

However in FFXI every once a while there is some event. some event gives some pretty clothes, such as in christmas time the santa outfit and summer fest the swim wear.

I am no good at playing the game, so I only get the Samurai Artifact outfit (The best looking Artifact in my opinion) but I do have all those event clothes. They can be obtained by just a lv1 XD

Come and think about it, Summer fest is comming soon, wounder what new item they have this year....

    Everybody loves Kaffee

Yes at lower lvls many people use the same gear and go with the best but this changes later on considerably. For one lets say you are a drk and arguably the best set for the drk is the black set but we have to remember just one piece of this could cost 10-20mil  so people might use a hauberk instead but another drk might where their relic gear or adaman hauberk if they are uber enough to have those pieces. Or one whm might wear a few pieces of the blessed set while another has a vermillions cloak or nobles tunic. What im getting at is if i took 10 whms that were lvl 75 i gurantee not one has the same gear or 10 monks at 75 thats what i love about this game is all the crazy gear you can get endgame and some of it shows that you have a big wallet while other peices show that you have killed every god a million times or done dynamis so much you could just say you lived there. I cant wait for more gear to come out from the new expansion that you get from gaining besieged points and doing assault missions.
