Any1 else stuck in mmo Limbo?

So many good things to come. So many been there done that mmos out. I have tried EQ2 COV COH Daoc(played for 4 years all time fav mmo atm) AC AC2 EQ MXO AA AO EVE GW Planet Side UO  SWG and WoW. Yeah I have been around the block as the saying goes. Right now I am tring to sink my teeth into EQ2 but as I learned time and time again not to trust sony they appear to be swingin the gool ole nerf bat makin me wanna leave. Is there some secret amazing mmo that I missed somewhere? Some buried treasure that I missed. I am a avid mmoer and this will be the first post of many that I will make on this message board. I often read here to get ideas but now I think its time I voice my own thoughts .
I could rant about every mmo I have tried but in truth they, for the most part, just got old. Some games I left because I got upset with the game like AA and SWG. If you could recommend a game, preferably free that I could try. If I were to list my favorites I would say my 3 favorites were SWG, Daoc, and AC. I am big into pvp and I usually do not play a game unless there is pvp.
Well thats it. Back to the premise of the post, is anyone out there stuck aswell? It seems like mmo is a must once u try it u can't get enuf . I hope to see many new faces on this crazy forum .

If you wanna really see people in limbo you should check out the SWG forums here. Its full of people that dont know what to do with their lifes ever since the NGE hit.

    Same here pal...

With old mmorpg's being..well old. And new ones either bringing nothing promising or comming out in more than a year (Warhammer...) There is really nothing to play ... but we must - that is the nature of our addiction.

As for free mmos - Well i would try Shadowbane - It is old and bad , and probably the most ruthles pvp game ever , but it has very cool comunity , Same goes for Anarchy Online

If you want to try something very diferent (but with monthly fee) go Ryzom or CoV

And whatever you do know that NWN2  is comming out in september

Many folks are stuck in limbo becuase they trying to have that same experince they had with there first mmo,s that they got hooked on.This is very hard if not impossible to reproduce since most vertaran players either have lives or adapt so quickly to any game nothing seems overwhelming and the end game is always in sight.Back AT the very start of EQ were the best days for me.When we were all innocent and the word newb didnt exist.

  • EindrachenEindrachen Member Posts: 211

I'm there.  Tried WOW, EQ2, CoX, etc.  They were fun for a while, but now that I have some experience with the whole MMO thing, I know what it is I'm looking for, and what it is I need in a game.

Will the new MMOs get me as a customer?  Too soon to tell.  I will say it's not gonna be easy; I've been rather jaded due to the actions (or inactions) of almost any big MMO company.  (Except NCSoft; those folks were really easy and smooth to deal with.  Or so it seemed when I was playing their games...)

Well theres Wurm online thats just gone gold.

Its pvp.....but maybe a bit too slow and difficult for some to get to grips with, especially if you like fast moving brainless hack n slash

I too, am stuck in MMO limbo. :(
I went from SWG, to CoV, to Eve, to PlanetSide. SWG (as everyone knows) sucks now. CoV was fun to play, but I couldn't find anyone good to play with. Everyone was either "casual" (they only logged on once a week), or they only cared about themselves and would use you then dump you. Terrible community. Eve had a nice community, was sort of fun, but was just...too slow for my taste. I also like having some sort of humanoid figure to attribute myself to. And PlanetSide, well, it's like being in the damn e-military. I had more fun in the VR room playing with the vehicles by myself than going out with my outfit. The commanding officers barked at everyone. If someone was slowed down, taking fire, or lost, they'd leave him behind. I don't want to log in for 2 hours every night to get barked orders at and occasionally abandoned by my teammates.

Anyway, any suggestions for MMOs that have good communities? I also miss a good crafting system (something I liked in SWG that a haven't seen elsewhere).

Mate I know exactly how you feel - I have wasted £100s trying out games and hating them after 3, 4 weeks because the end game just wasnt swg. I miss the GW :( I miss being able to run around the entire map doing other peoples group rated missions by myself to get the last block of master fencer. Im trying to wrack up games without monthly fees (DnL & FoM, pristontale etc) that I can jus play for an hour, anything longer than that and I get fed up. Ive had some of the swg songs stuck in my head, the musician stuff like starwars2 & starwars3.

Yeah the CR5s are knobs and completely ruin the game. If you like it otherwise I'd suggest joining a light hearted pick up group - some of them dont even speak and let you take ninja afks when you get fed up. Another tip is to turn command chat off - that works really well :) Jus follow the other people in your squad (thats where the xp is anyway) and you dont have to be annoyed by the blue texted gimps.

No kidding, since NGE hit Ive reactivated and canceled the following games.

    DAOC (once)
    WoW (Twice)
    SWG (Twice)
    Eve-online (once)
    COH (once)
    EQ2 (Twice)

NGE has cost me a lot of jingle...sheesh.  Ive played all of those games excepting WoW no more than 3 weeks before canceling again.  Nothing comes even close to what SWG was pre-CU (bugs and all).   All of the above games  lack something.  The last big disappointment (unsurprisingly) was EQ2, I cant tell you how bloody sick to death I am of grinding.

EQ2 has this one-off combat that drives me nuts, it doesnt feel any where near as crisp as DAoC combat.

WoW is a great game but once you get to 57ish you either decide to get on the instance treadmill or abandonship...I choose the later.

DAOC, my all time favorite game next to SWG, culminated in the end in a solo-instance grind-till-your-eyes-bleed-so-you-can-RVR-fest.

Eve-online, brilliant concept, beautiful graphics but... and I'll only say this once.  I AM NOT MY SHIP!

COH, I dunno, just seemed like way way too much grinding to get anywhere.

I long for a skill based game with decent graphics, depth of "world" which allows me to choose how I wish to play.  One with a developed, complex economy and crafting system, one with implicit interdependancies between players which smootly and naturally flow.  Most importantly, no grind, and no levels, and brutal meaningful PVP including death with consequence.

My suggestion to all mmorpg'ers stuck between games - take a break! play console games! play single-player games! There's a whole world of other games out there! :)

And like many said - there isn't a be-all-and-end-all title (will there ever be?) out right now - so why beat a dead horse? Take a break, enjoy some fresh air - you might be pleasantly surprised when you do return to the genre.

Amen.  If I were still playing an MMO, I'd have never even glanced sideways at Oblivion or anything else, for that matter.  After stopping all of the games I used to play, I started going back to pick up other games that were good but never got noticed since I had spent my disposable income for the month on MMO.

Also, it's healthier for your MMO enjoyment to step back, play other stuff, and ask yourself, "Now, what the hell about MMOs is it that I really want?"  That way, the next time you get into an MMO, you won't get the addiction so bad that even if the game sucks you keep playing.  If you diversify your gaming hobby a bit, it's hard to be addicted to something that just isn't fun.

    A bit condenscending dontcha think?

Really, we of course are aware that there are other games out there but thats not the point.  The point is that we desire an MMO that is worthy of our time.  I, for instance have several hundred other games, I buy a couple every month, have done so since I was in college in 93.  Single player games are just that single player.  I play a great deal of BF2 for example, a great and fun game but not persistant world.  There is also GalCiv 2 which  for you 4X fans is worth a play, as is Oblivion for the RPG crowd and Imperial Glory or Rome Total War for the Tactical Strategy fans.  Heck a little gem that snuck in under the radar called Space Rangers 2 proves once again that gameplay trumps glitz.

Now  it may sound like I spend all of my waking hours playing games, this couldnt be farther from the truth.  I am simply a game enthusiast, I have about 2 hours a day I can play maybe 5 days a week.  (After the wife and kids go to sleep).  I have other hobbies too, fishing, guitar playing, writing, and I even fiddle around with DarkBasic Pro and all that entails.

So, its not so much missing the forest for the trees but simply a desire to delve into an immersive and gratifying alternate univers .... only a good MMO can provide that.

Try this: The Saga of Ryzom maybe it´ll get you out of Limbo.
I won´t say anything about it, only that I like it a lot.
Everyone is to decide for himself if he likes it too, or not.
It´s different from other MMOs, Sandbox stile.
For a great Gameplay Video look here : Restless Child (direct downlad)

Maybe it can get you out of Limbo, as it did with many SWG-Refugees lately.

I Know how you are feel, there are no good games out at all, all of them in WIP. My favourite of all time was DAOC , I was a DAOC god.

SWG didnt cut it for me, stopped COV when my stalker hit 40. Auto Assault is cheap, WOW was great until PvP meant waiting outside WG for one hour waiting for hordes who were complete noobs, Planetside got boring, forget Evernerd, Guildwars the killing takes to long and the combat a bit crap, and every other MMO that has come out has been awful. As for EvE, lol what a waste of time.

My ultimate advice is : Get BAttlefield 2, by far the most superior game to be made in teh last year and a half. You won't regret it!

I sincerely apologise if i came across as condescending (the perils of online forums >_<)

Perhaps i should have addressed my post more clearly to younger game players who think that MMOs are all there is to computer games, rather than 'gaming ethusiasts' such as you. (btw I'm 33 and like to play a whole breadth of games as well)

yes, it can be awesome if an MMO works for you - drawing you in, immersive experience, fun! More often than not, however, people usually reserve these adjectives for their FIRST mmo, even if there might be certain aspects they're not entirely happy with.

The first MMO one plays always has that mystique about it - like first love or girl/boyfriend. Somehow, subsequent MMOs that one plays (regardless of title) never seem to capture the magical MMO experience of his or her first, at the risk of over-generalisation.

Players who started with EQ don't usually think much of WoW even if they might play it. Players who started off with WoW don't think much of any other MMO.

In a nutshell, people are usually more critical of subsequent MMOs they play because they know what to expect and look for, from their learning experience with their first game from this genre.

Why? perhaps because MMOs generally haven't really departed from the same fundamental mechanics after all these years? The same 'winning' strategy that you've learned in your first MMO can be applied almost wholesale with another title? Every other title is the 'same old, same old', other than a change in skins and fluff?

Thank you for reading this far - my point is: maybe some of us are trying too hard to find that 'ideal' MMO that will keep us happy for the rest of our gaming lives. Let's give every MMO a fighting chance and if there really isn't any MMO title out there currently that makes you happy, maybe another genre would be a refreshing change!

Variety is always good, open minds are always better. :)

I'm in the same boat as a lot of people posting here pld a number of mmo's over the years recently swg then wow. Got to a point with wow that i didnt have 5 hours every evening to battle through MC for very little reward so started to look for something new.

eq2 - dabbled a while but it was too similar to WOW offered nothing different and wasnt as clean cut

ddo - got a beta for this and by time game came out came to the conclusion wasnt gonan offer much ong term.

DnL - erm not made my mind up yet looks good promises lots but i somehow cant see it lasting :/

also dabbed with daoc and eve but really didnt like (daoc is a good game but the new servers were ful of experienced players with very little time for new players and groups were a mare to get)

So what now im lost all i can see is tumbleweeds rolling accross my pc. I dont do singe player games too much so not really an option for me so where do i go nxt ?

  • HectateHectate Member Posts: 7

OP.. i am in much the same boat

I have played a few different mmos over the last little while.
While trolling i stumbled accross a game i hadnt played called "Seccond Life" and started playing that
I have no intention of playing it for any extended amount of time but its a fun stop gap.
What I like is that its  "SandBox MMO" so there is no LvLing grind and no Farming to be done. Which is what i want while i look for a game to call home.
Pluss its fun to Build and script your own Items/cloths/buildings/vehicals.

Not saying that is a great game .. its clunky as hell and just had its third birthday ... but its ok for a game to pass the time without haveing to catch up with other players to enjoy.

    I miss developing a character.

    Bleh

Another victim of MMO limbo right here...

I havn't REALLY been sucked into an MMO since Lineage 2, and that was back though Prelude/C1/Early C2...

Since then I've bought CoH (fun for about 2 weeks), GW (bored after a month... slight rebound rescently, but that lasted about 4 days), and most rescently WoW... WoW kept my attention for about a month but... then... I'm not sure... Just got boring...

I'm not even going to talk about the COUNTLESS crappy OB's and F2P games I've tried... those last a good day or 2 at the MOST...

Aside from that I've spent the majority of my MMO time on Lineage 2 private servers... Now, don't flame me... It's nothing to do with being cheap, but rather because I don't feel like GRINDING on official anymore... Faster rates ftw baby~ ntm there's a few private server's with a LOT of people...

Just rescently (like around the time E3 '06 showed me what's to come) I've just about completely dropped all MMO's... It's dawned on me that litterally NOTHING currently out there will hold my attention for more then a week now, so not even bother...

    But there is hope...

Call me optimistic, but the next generation of MMO's seem to be the most promising yet~ Games like SUN, Tabula Rasa, Huxley, and Aion have REALLY drawn my attention (especially Aion and SUN)... Problem is, none of these are coming out anytime real soon... so what's the course of action?...

    NOTHING!

I think maybe this "limbo" is exactly what we need... maybe we all just need a break from MMO's, so when these amazing games hit, we will be ready to welcome them with open arms~... So everybody~ just relax... take some time off... spend some time with your gf's~ hang with the guys~ maybe take up a second job, or look into that IT course you've been interested in?... The next generation of MMO greatness is right around the corner, and we need to be wide eyed and awake when they slap us with their grind stick!
