Hey guys.
I've read through the previous threads, but some of the responses are so detailed and awesome I thought I might try my luck with my own thread.
I recently built my new pc, a seething dual core AMD with a 7900 series video card and a couple of gigs of nice RAM. Ive been looking for the MMORPG I want to play, to be honest the only thing that looks really good is Star Trek Online. Ive played/tried; EVE Online, SWG, UO, AO, Guild Wars, DoAC and more that I can't remember.
The only reason I haven't tried EQ2 yet is because a friend of mine was playing it and told me there was no pvp. This was a while ago now, so has EQ2 implmented pvp?
Im your old school Ultima Online player, so im looking for a full loot, open pvp enviroment. Of course there will need to be places I can build my character before im ready for combat. Does the pvp experience of EQ2 offer this?
Id love a recommendation for a starting character (I just downloaded the trial, if I like it ill download the full game and become a subscriber). I'm happy to start out with melee untill I understand how the magic system works, what would a good build be for a noob to learn about EQ2?
Also, if there is a specific server for pvp, would I need to start my character on there or else be eternally doomed to just fighting the AI?
edit: gah, i meant to post this in the EQ2 forums.

To answer your question shortly. We have no f*ck'in idea if EQ2 is really for you. Only you do if you give it a try.
What I can offer you is a little detail on how their PVP system works currently. I've wrote this system out on here I think three times, but I'll do it again because I'm just that bored.
-You can attack anyone within 8 levels of you (this might be getting lowered).
-The level cap stated above increases the further away from your home city you travel.
-You can only attack people from the other city (cities are Freeport and Qeynos).
-When you kill someone you get exp, 10% of the coin they have on them, and a random chance for one item that they have on them. It could be something that they are wearing (as long as it is not Attuned, No-Drop, No-Trade) or it could be just weeds that they picked while harvesting.
-PvP is fairly unbalanced, you can check the leader boards and see this.
-PvP has become nothing but a hide-and-seek game. With no real reason for the PvP all anyone does is hide/invis around until they fine someone that is lower level them (or higher if they are playing a certain class that owns their victim's class) and waits until you are at a weak point.
-Most people that get attacked (don't get first attack) instantly flee as long as you are within their range (if they con red to you they might stick out the fight, even then some of them flee).
In conclusion, for the most part PvP in EQ2 is nothing but a game of hide-and-seek and first attack = the win or the start of chase since the other person didn't get first attack.
Everything I wrote is not from my experiences. It everything you can read about in the PvP Forms from the EQ2 sight. You get some people stating how great the PvP is, but make note of their class then check the leadboard (proof of the poor balance).
My advice:
Download the free trial. There's no credit card required.
My experience:
EQ2 was a good game but I was / am burned out on 'typical' MMORPG's and have moved away from paying for them. I just don't see enough value in most MMORPG's today to justify sinking nearly $200 a year into subscriptions and then slapping payment for expansions on top of that. That's just me though, most people still pay monthly fees despite the fact that there are a plethora of free choices that are almost as good (in some cases better) than even the best of the MMORPG's available for fee play.
EQ2 offers many aspects that make it a very interesting and fun experience. Crafting is top notch, PVE is extremely well done. I found the PVP to be fun (especially if you bother to join a GROUP for it) and balanced (as long as youa re in a GROUP). The people who complain about 'balance' in the PVP system are people who try to SOLO in PVP. Hello? Classes are not designed in EQ or EQ2 to be balanced against one another. Classes in EQ & EQ2 are like classes in AD&D where each class fills certain roles in a GROUP. The group as a WHOLE is a powerful entity... but one player by themselves is generally going to have numerous weaknesses. The more 'solo' oriented a class is the better they will be at PVP, generally. Also the more ways a class has to get 'first strike' in PVP they will do better as well, be it excellent ranged damage or the means to hide from the enemy, etc.
If you want to PvP 1 on 1 then go play a game that's balanced for 1 on 1 PVP. I no longer play EQ2 but when I did I never had a problem in PvP as long as I made sure to be in a group when I left the 'safer' areas of the world.
You state you are looking for open PVP: EQ2 is open PVP but with some limitations based on level, etc. This is necessary because EQ2 is level based. A higher level gives a huge advantage in PVP.
You want full loot: EQ2 offers 1 random item 10% of coin carried and a bit of XP. Not Full loot.
Yes there are "PVP" servers that you will need to join if you want the 'open' PVP system. All servers have PVP arena areas, however, which are actually kind of fun.
Personally? I'm shocked that you didn't stick with EVE or AO or DAOC. They all have better PVP than most other MMO's on the market. Hell even Guild Wars has a decent PVP system
But your 'completely open' and 'full loot' comments pretty much explain WHY you want PVP... I won't go there though. Suffice to say I don't think much of people who's only motivation for PvP is what they can loot off their victim's corpse.
Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.

Well reading thru your post only thing mentioned i can work with is you mentioned pvp.
EQ2 does have pvp servers now.PvP there is rather open meaning you can get attacked anywhere anytime apart from the city.
Also after you move to the expanded regions you are fair game at any level.Prior to this there is a 10 level gap for pvp.
Also you can lose your money and any non equiped item that is below legendary is value. So always bank regularly.
Its worth a try anyhow.
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
