Ryzom here I come, ehmm not for 4 days, WOOOT

TigerchaTigercha Member Posts: 182

Well I have taken a weeks leave from Work and thought , yes I will play some GW and maybe try something else, I wandered over to the D n L forum for my daily humor, (If Laughing at others misfortune is so bad why does it feel so good) and noticed a Link to Ryzom and thought well lets read the feed back, and that all looked good, so I read the forum and everyone was all happy and tree huggerish and thought, YES lets try this, so I wander over to the Ryzom web site to Downlload the 1.5 Gb install and whilst doing this decided to register and, something that I seemed to have missed on the forum was the thread saying, ehmm what we going to do for the next four days, so this game looks like it is going to fall outside my leave.

So the question is does this happen often, if it does not why is there no big discussion either on the changes or the fact you guys need to find something to do in RL untill its back online.

    Hey

No, this does not happen often. It has never happened before as far as I know. The patch is huge and will include a new improved newbie area and lots of fixes. And also the necessary changes for Ryzom Ring (scenario builder and DM tool for players) I think.

We're pretty excited about the patch - but have absolutely NO clue what to do during the downtime! :D

Have been reading the actual Ryzom forums in an attempt to assess the maturity of the players and its all seems good, I also noticed that the Interface was very very SWG in its look and thats not a bad thing, I am supprised that this game never got more of the old SWG players, but I am sure I will find out for myself on Friday when the servers are back online.

I spent saterday and sunday playing the game,.took 6 hours to get the download and all the patchs installed, but the wait payed off,its a good game as far as i can tell.

4 days,. owch I know but ill be there when servers go up,. and im sure they will get a few months out of me no problem, lots of freedom/good crafting system/ hybrid level/skill based game,..and yes,... the abillity to chop apart skills and mix them up to make your own custom skills is what I think is the best point so far,.

took me all day to understand the skills.I was one hell of a lost newbie, there site has a vary breef view on the skills and how you can custom make your own.I didnt get anywhere near the pvp aspect and im not sure how the crazy maxed out players out power the halfwaypoint players.but its mainly team based pvp i hear so its probly not to bad. There are pvp zones that spawn some of the best resorses,I from what I read ,.guilds pvp over areas of intrest.

but the lack of open pvp is counterd by the awsome skill system and crafting aspect,.the npc allso seem to be intresting,at night this weard wolfdog was hunting and killing my newbie mobs, and yea,. then it attacked me when it killed off the newb mobs.lol

nothing really seems basic or cookie cutter so far in the game,.and the lore is done well,.I cant talk about grinds or in depth pvp or pve,.but i can tell you it should instrest you if you dont want your hand held or dont like class restricted games.I dont do quests if I dont have to,. I did see them there "Missions" but i didnt do any.

My understanding of it is patches like the one Ryzom is going through right now are what other games would put into an expansion and charge you for. They're far between though and I don't know about before, but for this one we were alerted well ahead of time to avoid nasty surprises :)

I was thinking about trying this game out after i read the post in the DnL forum. I am a little concerned about the down-time though. When I played SWG, I would get frustrated over several hours of server maintenance.

I can't imagine how I would have reacted to a 4 day outage. I really can't understand what would take them 4 days. I guess if their server location burned down, or if a large asteroid hit their building, and we had to wait for Bruce Willis and Ben Afleck to save the day...... but it really doesn't instill confidence that they would have a planned 4 day server shutdown. I mean, as bad as SOE is, they managed to push out an almost entirely different game in a few hours, twice while I was playing SWG.

I guess it makes me wonder how long they would be down if they lost a hard drive, or some other integral part of a server machine. If they don't have any kind of redundancy, how long would it take to recover from that sort of unplanned emergency?

This 4 Day Patch is the first one to occur so far. And it´s only because they have to change some of the Server settings to make the new Expansion Ryzom Ring possible. It´s free and iot´s grrrreeeaaaaat !!!
It´ll let you design your own lands and Scenarios. Read more about it on its official site, they´re far better then me in explaining it.

Those 4 days will be a hell of a time for all of us Players but they´ll pay off I´m sure about it.
A new "New Player Experience" is patched into it, and lots of other nice new things.
It´ll be another 500mb or so to DL when it´s done but: Hey, it´s a FREE expansion!!!!

I for myself am pretty happy that it´s come at last!!! *whooot*
    Go Nevrax, GO!!!

@ the one above me: An unplanned emergency is most often hadled within about an hour or so.
The longest I´ve seen the German Server down in 2 years of play was about 6 hours, when it was switched to a new machine. Small problems like a broken Hard drive or somesuch are handled faboulusly in a very short time

Ah and btw. Don´t let the Game down before you´ve even got the cahnce to try it. It´s absolutely worth the wait. Call me a Fanboy, but I belive so!!!

Ryzom, we dare to be different.
    Do you dare to adapt?

Yeah as I understand it, the 4 days is for introducing a new shard structure ready for R2 expansion and then testing. This is the first time in the almost 2 years since release there has been downtime of longer than half a day to my knowledge, and is a 1 off thing.  Normally they manage to get the shards up well before they say, so you may be playing in 3 or even 2 days if lucky :)

Be reminded that this is the only time this has happened in Ryzom (unless you count pre-release, which I wouldn't know about). :) Downtime anything like this is not common at all.

This is all that is involved:

This is not an average patch ... Alot is being added/fixed in this patch... The NPE a whole new area where new players will start is a big addition aswell as the collision optimisation thrughout all the lands of atys ...which is a magor change for a game... With any other game you would have to buy and expansion ... this patch is preparing for the free expansion called the Ryzom Ring.

NO-- this game does not go down for multi day patches usually(never before as far as I know)

NO-- this game does not go down all the time for maitnance like WoW.(Which had a weekly down time when I tried it out... I doubt that has changed since.)

Have a nice day and enjoy your stay on Atys if you join us :)

    ~Redslayer-Saga of Ryzom~ Active again!
    ~Kinch/Lotu-WoW~ Retired
True RedSlayer - Eve ~ Current Primary game

Indeed Ryzom is very much like SWG used to be at release time - minus the bugs, of course. Most of my guild left SWG when the NGE hit the fan and found a new home in Ryzom.

Combat requires skill and knowledge, there are various types of attacks (slashing, piercing, blunt for melee, acid, cold aso for mages for example) and mobs have various strengths and vulnerabilities. Attacks are customizable and HAM costs are important and require fine tuning.

Crafting is complex and subtle, the recipes for the better items can be discovered after countless experiments vith various materials and the best of them are well guarded secrets.

There is a discussion on the forum (maybe you missed, there are a lot of threads :P), there was also news on the main site.

This does not happen often, but since this patch requires a lot of work to the servers to allow for the future (when ryzom ring comes out) it will take some time.

Ofcourse, players arn't being charged for this time (the 4 days have been credited to all the accounts).

After this patch they'll be a new trial offer, if your still interested might be a good idea to check the site for the new offer.

No you have perfect timing. After the patch is done the new starter lands will be open. Be patient, the best is yet to come :D
